For all the talk of Stranger Than Fiction's clever Kaufmanisms, the most honest and sincere part of the film is about as clever as fireworks on the 4th of July. Harold Crick (Will Ferrell) sits at a small table in a local bakery and is coaxed into eating a freshly baked cookie with a glass of milk for dipping. It's a cliche now to complain that HBO has the best original programming on television, but never has that been more true than in the case of The Larry Sanders Show, which ran for six seasons from 1992 to 1998 and was nominated for (and won) countless Emmys and every other award under the sun. The show is pure genius and pure simplicity: Larry Sanders (Garry Shandling) is a late night talk show host on an unspecified network in the post-Carson era. When you hear that a film has been sitting on the shelf for a couple of years (since 2006, apparently), certain reactionary red flags go off in your head. Of course, the makers of the new political thriller, Vantage Point, could argue that it was the subject matter, not sloppy filmmaking or underdeveloped characters, that required some temporal displacement. After all, the narrative revolves around the attempted assassination of the U.S. President at an anti-terrorism summit in Spain. The argued novelty of writer Barry Levy's script and director Pete Travis' approach is the Rashomon-styled multiple perspective of the participants. Stephen Chow’s Shaolin Soccer was a unique genre potpourri in which sports films, The Matrix, and science fiction anims all irreverently coalesced into a frantically funny tale of victorious underdogs. The filmmaker’s signature cartoon craziness – an idiosyncratic mixture of Buster Keaton’s physical comedy and Dragonball Z’s lunatic action – likewise permeates Kung Fu Hustle, a similarly ridiculous medley of gangster pictures, musicals, and martial arts films. read the full review | |
