| | 3. Up (4-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack) new! | | | Director: Peter Docter | | Format: Blu-Ray DVD Release Date: 11/10/2009 | | Up - Blu-Ray DVD Review By: Dusty Somers - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 11/10/2009 4:23 PM | | With the kind of winning streak that Pixar’s got going for it, it’s almost impossible to temper expectations before experiencing their latest film. As of yet, it’s also unnecessary; the studio’s combination of technical wizardry and masterful storytelling has produced a remarkable string of films that have achieved commercial success and critical acclaim with equal universality. Far be it from Pixar’s tenth feature, Up, to break the mold, and indeed, it’s one of the studio’s most touching and accomplished works to date. Not many could’ve spun gold from a story with a cranky octogenarian as its protagonist, but Pixar never panders with its storytelling, and that ends up creating a piece of art that effectively touches all ages on different emotional levels. read the full review | |

At the time, I managed a video store. Customers and employees alike were ranting and raving about this flick. I wasn’t quite sure what was so significant about it, considering that the filmmakers couldn’t even come up with an original title (Roger Corman used the same title in a movie he producer/wrote in 1955). I figured I would hate it for sure, especially seeing as how I was a very cynical and jaded filmgoer (a condition that hasn’t improved) who hadn’t anything new and noteworthy in the world of cinema for several years. read the full review

Fountain (Blu-ray) new! | | | Starring: Hugh Jackman Rachel Weisz Director: Darren Aronofsky | | Format: Blu-Ray DVD Release Date: 11/10/2009 | User Rating: 5 | | The Fountain - DVD By: Daniel J. Stasiewski - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 5/14/2007 1:36 PM | | The film is one that spans a millennium. From the story of a Spanish conquistador (Hugh Jackman) sent to the Mayan territories in search for the Tree of Life to a narrative involving a man (Jackman again) traveling to a nebula in search of the Mayan underworld, the film’s ambitious scale is unbelievable. Yet the romance at the center of it all, a contemporary love story about a research scientist (once again, Jackman) trying to cure cancer to save his dying wife (Rachel Weisz), grounds the film. The combination results in revelations and heartbreaking truths about mankind.

I put it right up there with reviewing The Beatles or Huck Finn. What do you say that hasn't already been said? How do you find an angle on something in its seventh decade? For full disclosure, I have to admit that this movie has been in my Top 5 films ever since I was probably five- or six-years-old. Movies have come and gone and this film has never wavered. When we got a VCR, it was the first film I taped off of TV and watched and rewatched. When it was released on VHS, I had the deluxe edition. And back again for another version for the 50th Anniversary. In 1999, I was put my money down for a bare bones DVD version for the 60th Anniversary. Just back in 2005, I purchased the three-disc Collector's Edition on DVD. Now, Warner Bros. has gone into full Oz-mode again for the 70th Anniversary of the film. read the full review

Wizard of Oz-70th Anniversary (Blu-ray) | | | Starring: Jack Haley Margaret Hamilton Director: King Vidor Victor Fleming | | Format: Blu-Ray DVD Release Date: 9/29/2009 | | The Wizard of Oz (70th Anniversary - Ultimate Collector's Edition) (1939) - Blu-Ray DVD Review By: El Bicho - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 10/5/2009 9:37 PM | | One way to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of The Wizard of Oz is the Ultimate Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray. This adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is one of the all-time classics in the history of cinema, and will win you a bet against nay-sayers who confidently claim there’s never been a remake as good as the original film. Shot in sepia-toned black and white, young Kansan Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) lives on a farm with her aunt and uncle, dreaming of a chance to break away, as the song goes “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.” During a tornado, she receives a bump on the head and then finds herself, her dog Toto, and her house, which landed on and killed the Wicked Witch of the East, in the magical Land of Oz, vividly brought to life by Technicolor. read the full review

The Victor Fleming-directed (at least Fleming gets the credit) classic, based on Margaret Mitchell's book of the same name, looks exceedingly good in high definition, and the bonus items (video and otherwise) which accompany the release are sure to please fans. Everyone knows the tale of Gone with the Wind – Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) comes of age as the Civil War breaks out. It forces her to become an adult far sooner than she, and her family, may have wished, but Scarlett somehow manages – usually through conniving, lying, deceit, and other less than ladylike methods – to hold her family and her fortune together. read the full review

Hannah Montana: The Movie acted as my official introduction to the identity crisis that is Miley Cyrus and her pop-music-powered alter ego. I have two boys, after all. The farthest we've ventured down Disney's empowered-female food chain is Kim Possible (which, for the record, deserves its own live-action film adaptation in the vein of Tomb Raider, yet better). But now, at least, I understand the hoopla surrounding this spunky, cool, and charismatic young performer. Her overly produced musical anthems aren't my cup of tea, but I get why so many people line up to drink what she's serving. read the full review

Looking at his body of work from the late 1980s through today, one gets a clear sense of his dark, humorous world view. Burton's films are filled with a sense of the fantastic, the supernatural, and the wondrous. The look of every frame of a Burton film feels as though it has been considered; everything is just where he wanted it to be, the light is perfect, and the colors exact (even if they have to be made exact in post). Unfortunately, there are times when one watches a Burton movie that it feels as though he has sacrificed story for look. Such is the case with the recently released to Blu-ray Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007). read the full review

Ever since I first learned of the production, back when Ellen Page was set to star, this was a movie that was high on my radar. Why? Well, it marked director Sam Raimi's return to the horror genre. Fans have been waiting for this ever since 1992's Army of Darkness, which was the last film Raimi made that was even close to horror. In the 1980s Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson were masters of the horror genre, each of them having a number of cult hits under his belt. Then their fates shifted, Hollywood noticed their talents, and they both became heavy hitters on the blockbuster market with their work on the Spider-man and Lord of the Rings films, respectively. read the full review

Just like religion and the U.S. Constitution, science fiction has remained popular while losing much of its meaning. Sci fi has never been bigger than it is today, but unlike the fifties -- when even the lamest creature features carried "messages" about nuclear anxiety or the nobility of space exploration -- today's sci-fi movies and TV series don't have much to say. At best, they are action/drama series with intergalactic settings. The hugely successful Star Trek franchise has been part of that transition. read the full review

The Wizard of Oz is a classic film from an era when American studios were confident and breaking ground (within the discipline imposed by the Hays Office). Stuffed with now-familiar tropes -- the yellow brick road, the wicked witch, the emerald city -- and a supply of often-quoted lines, famous songs, and gags, the film is probably as entertaining now as it was in 1939. Oz was groundbreaking in a number of ways, most obviously in its visual impact. Movies in color had been made for a while, but most films in 1939 were still in black and white, so the gimmick of beginning in BandW and shifting to Technicolor was very effective. Some of the special effects were advanced at the time (and are still one of the movie's strengths). read the full review

McNamara - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews Published on: 6/10/2008 5:55 PM | | There Will Be Blood is certainly not an easy film to watch, nor is it a particularly enjoyable experience. But it's an immensely powerful movie that's also darkly humorous, poignant, emotional, violent and ultimately, quite tragic. It's a perversely compelling story about a man who's torn to shreds by a world not fit enough for his madness, hatred, and stark self loathing. read the full review
