I can't say I remember what exactly happened in the first two Resident Evil movies, other than I watched them and didn't dislike them enough to take a pass on Resident Evil: Extinction, a potential trilogy capper or, more likely, part three of five or eight. This series, based on a popular videogame, is one of those second-tier franchises that, in a sneaky and undemanding way, can be more enjoyable than its classier counterparts. It's also the kind of franchise lacking the faux dignity to pretend that three is a magic number. Russell Mulcahy, the newest director in the fold, knows from exhaustible cult franchises, having made the original Highlander. read the full review

Anyone who’s a fan of the Resident Evil series of video games can't help but get a little twinge of excitement seeing the trailer for this second RE film, even if you thought the first Resident Evil was atrocious. Why? This flick has some of your favorite game characters: Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory) and the horrific Nemesis monster. Dude! But while I'll admit that I felt that twinge (since I am an old fan of the games), I can't say that this equally lame sequel does anything to prolong that twinge into real enjoyment. Resident Evil: Apocalypse rots – as badly as its zombie costars. It has a few cheap violent thrills, but none of the true suspense or chills that you'll crave. read the full review

The best part of playing the Resident Evil video games was the suspense – moving through the shadowy hallways, twitchy in the knowledge that at any moment a zombie (human or otherwise) would leap out to chomp on your neck or leg. And better yet, you’d have your trusty shotgun in hand to blow that dirty ghoulie out of your path. But while the Resident Evil games may have set new standards for thrills, suspense, and gore for video games, the movie really only succeeds in the third of these. Instead of creating real tension, it barrages you with false suspense and really loud, fast-paced techno metal (score by Marilyn Manson) to give the sense you should be scared. And when all else fails, gross the audience out. read the full review
