In the first minute of Push, a character utters a line that's all but verbatim: "Save the cheerleader; save the world." With the film's unapologetic intent to lift freely from Heroes and its progenitor X-Men firmly established, we're then treated to virtually nothing new in the ordinary-folks-with-extraordinary-abilities subgenre. Opening credit narration explains that there exist people born with special powers they don't necessarily want, and since the '40s an entity called Division has been trying to round them up and turn them into super-soldiers. There are a handful of abilities, and if you have one, you get a catchy name. Watchers can see the future. Pushers can put thoughts in your head. read the full review

This is the point where the comic book movie has truly come into its own, surpassing the usual boundaries to become something more. It’s impossible to give full credit to anyone here, although names can certainly be tossed out as to who made this more special than it would have been without them. It’s not a perfect film by any stretch, but it’s a great thrill ride. read the full review

McNamara - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews Published on: 10/1/2008 8:12 PM | | Iron Man is a film that comic book junkies will no doubt love, but it also appeals to those who generally shy away from the superhero genre because it retains a relevance to the world we live in today. War, weapons and terrorism are all hot-button issues surging through the daily news, and Iron Man definitely has a contribution to make to that discussion. read the full review

Edward Norton's Banner thinks and worries and tries to keep things under control until The Hulk comes out and starts picking up jeeps, tossing scrap metal at helicopters, and swatting away bullets and tranq syringes like so many gnats. The result doesn't stand up with the epic stories of Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark, but it's a nice way to kill two hours. read the full review

This fourth episode in the Batman series isnt a movie so much as a theme park. It wasnt scripted so much as run through the Hollywood script mill, where every line of dialogue is reduced to a catchphrase. Allow me to break the ice, says Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger), My name is Freeze. Learn it well. For its the chilling sound of your doom. That groaner is representative of pretty much every line of Batmans arch-nemesis. He later posits such zingers as, Tonight, hell freezes over! and Youre not sending me to the cooler! This is not character development so much as paint-by-numbers screenwriting, where you can imagine the gang sitting around wondering what incorrigible pun theyll come up with next. read the full review

There have been a number of television shows and movies (live and animated) dedicated to the “Dark Knight” and “Man of Steel.” However with the exception of the Wonder Woman live action show of the 1970s starring Lynda Carter; Wonder Woman’s solo adventures are few and far between. There’s been talk for quite some time of a live action film, fan favorite Joss Whedon was working for some time on a script; but he couldn’t make the producers happy and eventually walked away from the project and to this day the film languishes in “development hell.” Fortunately there is now an animated DVD for Wonder Woman, simply entitled Wonder Woman. read the full review

Above all, Superman Returns swept me up with its performances, effects, engaging story and sense of nostalgia.
