Remember the hoopla over the novel A Time To Kill? It was celebrated author John Grisham's second book -- actually his first book -- the book he published after The Firm became a hit. The book that no one wanted before he was famous. The book, apparently, that, if it hadn't had his name on it, would never have been published. Now it's the fourth Grisham movie to be made, continuing in grand fashion that franchise of increasingly average film versions of his increasingly average writing. read the full review

Falling Down offers an interesting concept that is handled with the grace of a psycho wielding a baseball bat. The material has potential for greatness, but it is treated with an absolute minimum of subtlety, almost as if the filmmakers are daring us not to roll our eyes. The film was directed by Joel Schumacher and to be fair, the hammer-it-home style is The Schumacher Way, but this is supposed to be a serious film about socio-emotional anger, not Batman and Robin. Michael Douglas headlines the film, playing a character that allows him to use his excellent shouting voice in almost every scene. read the full review

| | 8. Frost/Nixon | | | Starring: Michael Sheen Frank Langella Director: Ron Howard | | Format: DVD Release Date: 8/11/2009 | | Frost/Nixon - DVD Review By: Sean O'Connell - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews Published on: 4/10/2009 5:36 PM | |
If there's a single misstep in Ron Howard's expertly calibrated Frost/Nixon, it eluded me. Howard's spellbinding adaptation of Peter Morgan's Tony-nominated stage drama understands the politics that manipulate Washington and Hollywood. It comprehends how many interviews are won and lost long before the QandA begins. It figures out the best way to transition an airtight theatrical production to the roomier silver screen (giving the elements plenty of room to breathe). And -- most importantly -- it illustrates the intimidating power of television, which creates and destroys legacies on a daily basis. read the full review

No matter what you might have thought of Politically Incorrect or what you currently think of Real Time With Bill Maher, he's a genius, and this is not something I ever thought before watching this movie. The brilliant thing about this documentary, which, as noted in the commentary (more on that later), was NOT included in the Academy's list of best docs of last year, is that it manages to give a clear, defining point against religion and still be completely entertaining. I attribute that to Maher's capability to not be malicious about his beliefs, and to talk to intelligent, passionate, and undoubtably kind people who are willing to put their faith on the line and talk to (And I'm serious about this) a modern day Socrates; one who doesn't pull any punches and most importantly, asks the key question of, "Just how do really you know'" It's the responses that he gets from that question that make this movie stand head over shoulders over any other answer-seeking doc in the past five years or so. read the full review
