Rick Marshall (Will Ferrell) is a paleontologist who has a theory about time warps and after attacking Matt Lauer on The Today Show is kicked out of the science department and ends up working at a museum teaching children. All that changes when Holly Cantrell (Anna Friel) shows up showing him a fossil imprinted with the image of his lighter. She urges him to finish his tachyon amplifier which will detect these time warps. Using the amplifier Rick and Holly find a strong warp presence at the Devil’s Canyon which is being run by tour guide Will Stanton (Danny McBride). The excellence of Lost certainly hasn't gone unrecognized, however. This year, it was nominated for the Outstanding Drama Series Emmy for the first time since its freshman year. That's how good season four is. In fact, the only misstep is the convoluted, confused "The Other Woman," and even that isn't what you would call a bad episode. There are no creative failures here, only triumphs. It's as strong a season of television as any I've ever seen. read the full review

| | 14. Big Bang Theory-Complete 2nd Season | | | Starring: Johnny Galecki Kaley Cuoco | | Format: DVD Release Date: 9/15/2009 | | The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Second Season - DVD Review By: The Masked Movie Snobs - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 9/15/2009 8:48 PM | | The second season of the critically acclaimed comedy created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady about four nerdy geniuses and the beautiful girl next door has been released to DVD just days before season three premieres. From the very first episode you can see that this season contains a lot more character development and interaction as Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) go out on their very first and last date. During the first season, a lot of emphasis was put on the possible romance between them, so it was a little strange that they threw the two together so quickly just to rip them apart in the very next episode. read the full review | |

| | 16. Knowing | | | Starring: Chandler Canterbury Nicolas Cage Director: Alex Proyas | | Format: DVD Release Date: 1/10/2010 | | Knowing - DVD Review By: Bill Gibron - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews Published on: 6/26/2009 7:44 PM | |
In the list of filmmakers packed with wasted potential, Alex Proyas has to be near the top. While Dark City sparkled with a kind of surreal sci-fi magic, his other efforts -- including the gloppy Will Smith epic I, Robot -- have felt strained and unrewarding. So when you see his name attached to the lasted Nicolas Cage effort (said actor himself a perfect example of the law of continued diminishing returns), one fears a flop coming on. But as luck would have it, Knowing is actually very good. It proves that Proyas is perhaps one mainstream mega-hit away from finally fulfilling his so far unrealized possibilities.

Deeply personal, fiercely political, whimsical and unpredictable in style, and direct in voice, writer-director Slava Tsukerman's Perestroika resonates across personal, national, global, and even cosmic levels, all at once. After 17 years of self-imposed exile in America, renowned Jewish astrophysicist Sasha Greenburg returns to his hometown, Moscow, in 1992, the year that Perestroika ("restructuring") is sending shock waves through the social, cultural, and political life of Russia. Perestroika has meant greater political freedom, but it's a freedom without the infrastructure of purpose such that millions are flailing for opportunity. read the full review

In his feature-film debut, well-regarded Chinese opera director Chen Shi-Zheng makes a strong impression with Dark Matter, the story of a Chinese cosmology genius invited to America to join the team of a legendary cosmologist only to find that America isn't quite the land of opportunity that he had been brought up to believe. Based on the true story of a Chinese student who went ballistic at a major American university in the early '90s, Shi-Zheng's film, which originally premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival, was held from release after the shootings at Virginia Tech last April. Now, only a few days before the anniversary of the Virginia Tech massacre, it would seem the pushback, though well-meaning, was useless. read the full review
