Somehow, in the wake of Lucas’ CGI evisceration of his own work and overblown space operas like The Chronicles of Riddick, somebody still knows how to put together an outer-space romp that trades just as heavily on quips and character as it does on conflict and explosions. All the better, there’s barely a movie star in sight. The film in question is Serenity, the by-product of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Joss Whedon’s sci-fi series Firefly. Somehow, Whedon convinced Universal to pony up about $45 million to make and show Serenity to multiplex audiences, 95 percent of whom will have never seen the original series, which lasted on Fox for only 11 episodes back in 2002. read the full review

With one film, J.J. Abrams has made Star Trek younger, flashier, sexier, and funnier than it has been in decades. True, it may also be less intelligent, but Abrams’s reboot more than makes up for it with sheer exhilaration. By altering the franchise's storied past, he ignites a fevered barn-burner that's geared toward today's action junkies but also sets the stage for what could be a long and prosperous future. read the full review

There’s a wonderful twist in characters as Cole begins to believe he’s crazy and his psychiatrist has to convince him he’s right. Brad Pitt was nominated for an Oscar for his stand-out portrayal of a mental patient.

| | 14. TMNT (HD) | | | Director: Kevin Munroe | | Format: High Definition DVD Release Date: 8/7/2007 | | TMNT - DVD Review By: Jarad I. Wilk - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews Published on: 8/9/2007 7:30 AM | | Director Kevin Munroe has all the ingredients needed to make a successful TMNT adventure - a power-hungry tycoon, ugly bad guys and even uglier monsters, turtles fathered by a Chinese rat in a New York sewer and ninja fights. For me, however, there was something missing from this movie that I, as a kid, always got with the original cartoon series and comic books: Fun. I always remembered having fun and laughing while watching TMNT as a kid. This, however, felt more like I was visiting relatives that I have met before but hadn't seen in 10 years. It was slightly uncomfortable and I wasn't sure if I really wanted to reacquaint myself with them because they were different than I remembered and they smelled kind of funky. Then, of course, they start to fight and everything I was thinking went up in flames, 'cause, heck, it is fun to watch them fight. read the full review | |

| | 24. Fountain (Blu-ray) new! | | | Starring: Hugh Jackman Rachel Weisz Director: Darren Aronofsky | | Format: Blu-Ray DVD Release Date: 11/10/2009 | User Rating: 5 | | The Fountain - DVD By: Daniel J. Stasiewski - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 5/14/2007 1:36 PM | | The film is one that spans a millennium. From the story of a Spanish conquistador (Hugh Jackman) sent to the Mayan territories in search for the Tree of Life to a narrative involving a man (Jackman again) traveling to a nebula in search of the Mayan underworld, the film’s ambitious scale is unbelievable. Yet the romance at the center of it all, a contemporary love story about a research scientist (once again, Jackman) trying to cure cancer to save his dying wife (Rachel Weisz), grounds the film. The combination results in revelations and heartbreaking truths about mankind.

Obviously, a TV series has to have a story compelling enough to carry the show through a 20-something episodes. Unlike a movie, which is only a couple of hours long, a TV series needs to find a balance between delivering regular conclusions so that the viewers feel satisfied, while also setting up new twists and developments, which will keep the viewers wanting to come back. read the full review

Next (HD) | | | Starring: Jessica Biel Julianne Moore Director: Lee Tamahori | | Format: High Definition DVD Release Date: 9/25/2007 | | Next - DVD Review By: Rafe Telsch - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews Published on: 9/26/2007 7:42 PM | | In Next, Nicolas Cage plays a character who can see into the future and adjust what he's doing to change outcomes around. As Cris Johnson says: "Every time you look at [the future] it changes, because you looked at it." It's just a shame that Cage himself doesn't have the ability to avoid some of the bombs of his career. While Next isn't necessarily a career high for Cage, it is entertaining enough to make up for some of his shortcomings - say, to balance out his career for The Wicker Man. read the full review
