I can only presume that the British calendar is so uniquely screwy that it allows for a Christmas movie to open a week after Halloween. Or maybe Love Actually is just in a universe of its own… one in which the prime minister is inaugurated in November and where an adverb can be used to modify a noun. But a little oddness is forgivable: Directing a movie is a strange place for Richard Curtis, who's written umpteen Brit-friendly movies and TV shows over the years but hasn't directed one, until now. Little surprise then that Love Actually plays like a Richard Curtis Greatest Hits compilation. The film comprises nine major and barely-connected stories (as near as I can count) revolving around love and the weeks before Christmas. read the full review

Unlike its immediate predecessors, which have retooled (Unforgiven), remade (3:10 To Yuma), revered (Open Range), and re-imagined (The Proposition) the genre, Ed Harris' Appaloosa is simply content being a good Western. It's unapologetic of its formula, unwilling to waver in its characterizations, and unhurried in its pace. It tells a story you've heard before -- more than once -- but it handles its business with rugged aplomb. That ought to be enough. But for some reason, it isn't. read the full review

For David Fincher, his first was his worst. An intelligent director, Fincher cut his teeth on television commercials and music videos before making his feature debut in 1992 with a forgettable and regrettable installment in the Alien franchise. It was all uphill from there. Fincher's next five films arguably are modern classics, each impressively different from its immediate predecessor. Gen X fanboys idolize him for the basement-dwelling aggressions of Fight Club. The director brought flash -- and a needed backbone -- to pulp thrillers like The Game and Panic Room. And cineastes found plenty to appreciate in the meticulous musings of Fincher's cold-case police procedural, Zodiac. read the full review

One needs a groom to stay in the country, the other needs a bride to keep his job. Their plan is simple enough: a quick marriage followed by a quicker divorce. While visiting the to-be in-laws in Alaska, however, these faux-betrotheds soon find themselves questioning their true feelings and the sincerity of this proposal. read the full review

Gone with The Wind (Blu-ray) new! | | | Starring: Clark Gable Hattie McDaniel Director: Victor Fleming | | Format: Blu-Ray DVD Release Date: 11/17/2009 | | Gone with the Wind - 70th Anniversay Ultimate Collector's Edition - Blu-Ray DVD Review By: Josh Lasser - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 11/24/2009 8:21 AM | | As gilded and over-the-top as the Old South itself, the Gone with the Wind 70th Anniversary Collector's Edition Blu-ray release is an impressive tribute to one of the best loved films of all time. The Victor Fleming-directed (at least Fleming gets the credit) classic, based on Margaret Mitchell's book of the same name, looks exceedingly good in high definition, and the bonus items (video and otherwise) which accompany the release are sure to please fans. Everyone knows the tale of Gone with the Wind – Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) comes of age as the Civil War breaks out. It forces her to become an adult far sooner than she, and her family, may have wished, but Scarlett somehow manages – usually through conniving, lying, deceit, and other less than ladylike methods – to hold her family and her fortune together. read the full review

Apatow's works spend time with their characters, main and supporting, enough so that we can sincerely laugh with them and understand their decisions. It goes for his oeuvre overall as well: from the troubles of teenagers (Freaks and Geeks) to the pre-paranoia of college life (Undeclared) to the struggle of leaving your youth behind (The 40-Year-Old Virgin), Apatow builds, thematically, with each project. And that's how we finally come to Knocked Up. Ben (Seth Rogen) holds onto drugs and buffoonery the way Andy in Virgin held onto childhood/teenage obsession. read the full review

Damn you Anne Rice! Even since you introduced that lovelorn supermodel turned bloodsucker Lestat, the vampire has been romanticized all out of proportion. Cold yet compassionate, sexy but spurned, the supposed supernatural monster has gone from corpse to Casanova in the twinkle of a dateless spinster's eye. Now comes Twilight, the latest entry in the continued compromising of the classic Stoker archetype. Aimed directly at the ADD-addled attention span of the average Facebooker, aside from being no fun at all, it stands as one of 2008's most crass commercial statements. read the full review

From the very first episode you can see that this season contains a lot more character development and interaction as Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) go out on their very first and last date. During the first season, a lot of emphasis was put on the possible romance between them, so it was a little strange that they threw the two together so quickly just to rip them apart in the very next episode. read the full review

Ugly Truth new! | | | Starring: Gerard Butler Katherine Heigl Director: Robert Luketic | | Format: DVD Release Date: 11/10/2009 | | The Ugly Truth - Blu-Ray DVD Review By: Chelsea Doyle - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 11/17/2009 4:53 PM | | It's always interesting when a film gets universally panned by critics and yet makes a crazy amount of money at the box office. Sometimes this is because the film just had a big first weekend before anyone heard the word of mouth reviews, but sometimes it is genuinely because mainstream audiences loved it and ignored the critics altogether. The Ugly Truth is a classic example. It came out in July and got hit hard by critics, but it made almost $200 million dollars in theaters. Could it be because of the widespread appeal of stars Katherine Heigl and Gerald Butler? Or that sometimes critics can be snotty and expect romcoms to be more than they are? Whatever the reason, the film will most likely do just as well now that it is out on DVD and Blu-ray. It's not hard to understand why. read the full review
