If there's a single misstep in Ron Howard's expertly calibrated Frost/Nixon, it eluded me. Howard's spellbinding adaptation of Peter Morgan's Tony-nominated stage drama understands the politics that manipulate Washington and Hollywood. It comprehends how many interviews are won and lost long before the QandA begins. It figures out the best way to transition an airtight theatrical production to the roomier silver screen (giving the elements plenty of room to breathe). And -- most importantly -- it illustrates the intimidating power of television, which creates and destroys legacies on a daily basis. read the full review

Obviously, a TV series has to have a story compelling enough to carry the show through a 20-something episodes. Unlike a movie, which is only a couple of hours long, a TV series needs to find a balance between delivering regular conclusions so that the viewers feel satisfied, while also setting up new twists and developments, which will keep the viewers wanting to come back. read the full review

Director Mike Nichols and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin made two exceedingly smart choices in adapting George Crile's book Charlie Wilson's War. First, they consented to a brisk 95-minute running time, rather than fall prey to the "prestige" mentality that can saddle such projects, and that bloats them out to beyond two hours. The other choice was leavening their material with a snappy, devil-may-care attitude -- a sure-fire strategy to skim over their story's weakest areas of story and character development.
Charlie Wilson's War is entertaining, and that's about the extent of it. read the full review

John Cameron Mitchell 's thesis in Shortbus harkens back to E.M. Forster's classic exhortation: "Only connect." In Mitchell's world, however, a big part of connection is sexual connection, and a big part of sexual connection is the ability to give and enjoy earth-shattering orgasms. Mitchell's characters are in search of sexual connection, and it's a shocking, hardcore search that brings intensely graphic (and real) sex to mainstream cinema for the first time. To put it another way: Oh. My. God. read the full review
