Mel Gibson deserves a lot more credit than I've been giving him. A few years ago, no one could have conceived that the action star could pull off the lead role in a dazzling, epic, historical adventure-thriller-romance, let alone direct it. But he does, making Braveheart a vastly entertaining and powerful film. Gibson plays Scottish hero William Wallace, a Scotsman with simple roots who finds himself thrust into a role as leader of the Scottish revolt against England in the late 13th century. After the despicable King Edward the Longshanks (Edward I) decrees that English nobles will have the right to sexual relations with all newly-wed Scottish women, the revolution is set in motion. read the full review | |

Not the annoying kind of kooky spirituality, but a light "presence" of something that releases the cares of 1920's English housefraus and helps solve bad marriages and overall grumpiness. The "presence" resides in Italy where four women escape the rain and dreariness of their lackluster London lives and spend one month in a castle. The four women, relative strangers in post WWI England, include Lottie (Josie Lawrence) and Rose (Miranda Richardson), women who are clearly unhappy with their husbands and their drab lives in general. read the full review | |

For David Fincher, his first was his worst. An intelligent director, Fincher cut his teeth on television commercials and music videos before making his feature debut in 1992 with a forgettable and regrettable installment in the Alien franchise. It was all uphill from there. Fincher's next five films arguably are modern classics, each impressively different from its immediate predecessor. Gen X fanboys idolize him for the basement-dwelling aggressions of Fight Club. The director brought flash -- and a needed backbone -- to pulp thrillers like The Game and Panic Room. And cineastes found plenty to appreciate in the meticulous musings of Fincher's cold-case police procedural, Zodiac. read the full review | |
