Hollywood has found a new cash cow, though the use of the latter term might get more than a few supposedly chauvinistic critics in trouble. The modern woman, sick of the same old sloppy rom-com rationalizations, has decided to go gourmand. Like Veruca Salt in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, she wants it all and she wants it now. Oh course, back in the '70s, said little girl was considered a brat. Today, she is the reigning glamour queen of conspicuous consumption. A perfect example of this ideal is Rebecca Bloomwood. The heroine of P.J. Hogan's adaptation of Sophia Kinsella's Confessions of a Shopaholic, this spunky career gal wants a cushy job, a suave boyfriend, an understanding best bud, and an unlimited credit line. read the full review

If action "auteur" Michael Bay trained dogs instead of constructing Transformers, his canines would probably behave like Bolt. Disney's computer-animated mutt (voiced by John Travolta) defends his beloved owner, Penny (Miley Cyrus), from the evil forces of Dr. Calico (Malcolm McDowell) by head-butting semi-trucks, dangling from speeding locomotives, catapulting over military helicopters, and shooting laser beams from his eyes. Or, at least, he thinks he does. read the full review

John Cameron Mitchell 's thesis in Shortbus harkens back to E.M. Forster's classic exhortation: "Only connect." In Mitchell's world, however, a big part of connection is sexual connection, and a big part of sexual connection is the ability to give and enjoy earth-shattering orgasms. Mitchell's characters are in search of sexual connection, and it's a shocking, hardcore search that brings intensely graphic (and real) sex to mainstream cinema for the first time. To put it another way: Oh. My. God. read the full review

Let’s cut to the chase; the Weekly World News could have given us a better story about a man and a woman united by a heart transplant. It’s not for lack of talent, either, that this flick stumbles. If anything, Return to Me hosts almost as overqualified a cast as Brian De Palma’s lame duck blockbuster, Mission to Mars. The real problem here seems to be lack of directorial focus. After a career of feature film supporting roles, television walk-ons and cartoon voiceovers, Bonnie Hunt somehow convinced MGM to let her sit in the folding chair. The result is a charming romantic comedy tragically bogged down by the uncomfortable avoidance of its central plot point. read the full review

Of said talent, the comedy business and film industry took a major blow when comedian/actor Bernie Mac passed away after a battle with pneumonia, and the music business mourned the death of soul legend Isaac Hayes from a suspected stroke. Although these legends didn't end on what some would call a high note with their last film Soul Men, it's obvious they went out in style. read the full review

Here's a little something to think about, should you find your unfortunate, misguided, sorry butt dragged to see this utter waste of a movie. Who's more masculine-looking: Matthew McConaughey, with his Goldilocks looks and enormous pecs, or Kate Hudson, with her creepy, angular features and ironed-straight Guns N' Roses hairdo? This spurious conjecture is sadly far more interesting than How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, a film which effectively loses its audience inside of 10 minutes. read the full review

McNamara - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews Published on: 3/24/2008 7:16 PM | | At the very least, I Am Legend offers a great deal more than your average blockbuster, and it's this deviation from the normal Hollywood schlock that elevates it into a successful mish-mash of the isolation of Cast Away and the post-apocalypticism of 28 Days Later. So if you're a fan of either one of these films, the genres they put forth, the themes they evince, or even just of Will Smith, then I Am Legend is a film you'll surely enjoy. read the full review
