Somehow, in the wake of Lucas’ CGI evisceration of his own work and overblown space operas like The Chronicles of Riddick, somebody still knows how to put together an outer-space romp that trades just as heavily on quips and character as it does on conflict and explosions. All the better, there’s barely a movie star in sight. The film in question is Serenity, the by-product of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Joss Whedon’s sci-fi series Firefly. Somehow, Whedon convinced Universal to pony up about $45 million to make and show Serenity to multiplex audiences, 95 percent of whom will have never seen the original series, which lasted on Fox for only 11 episodes back in 2002. read the full review

(Special Edition Unrated + Digital Copy) | | | Starring: Michelle Khan Vin Diesel Director: Mathieu Kassovitz | | Format: DVD Release Date: 1/6/2009 | | Babylon A.D. - DVD Review By: The Masked Movie Snobs - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 1/7/2009 1:08 AM | | Babylon A.D., based on the novel Babylon Babies by Maurice Georges Dantec, is a futuristic tale of politics, religion, and cybernetic enhancement. Let me rephrase that; Babylon A.D. gave me the impression that it was supposed to be a futuristic tale of politics, religion, and cybernetic enhancement. Really, it's just a derivative wanna-be Blade Runner with some pretty sweet special effects. But I'm getting ahead of myself. read the full review

| | 43. Paul Naschy Collection | | | Starring: Paul Naschy | | Format: DVD Release Date: 10/21/2008 | | The Paul Naschy Collection - DVD Review By: Luigi Bastardo - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 12/26/2008 10:46 PM | | Now, for those of you unfamiliar with the works (let alone the name) of Paul Naschy, allow me to bore you for a few moments with a little history: Paul Naschy (born Jacinto Molina) has been referred to as the Spanish Lon Chaney and has earned quite the reputation with EuroHorror lovers as a horror movie auteur: having written, produced, directed and starred in dozens of horror movies from the '70s. Vampire, mummy, hunchback, Republican -- he's done it all! But perhaps his most famous (or infamous, if you prefer) portrayal would be the recurring character of Waldemar Daninsky, the tortured protagonist of numerous werewolf features (a role that helped to earn him a Gold Medal Award for Fine Arts from King Juan Carlos I in 2001). read the full review | |
