Shawn Levy has no soul. Perhaps put another way, he is one of the few filmmakers working today who lacks the requisite motion picture magic to make his fantastical ideas sing. Now that's nothing new to anyone who's seen his hamfisted hackwork in such incoherent remake comedies as Cheaper by the Dozen and The Pink Panther. He's also the Nachos, Flanders Style of visionaries, unable to bring a lick of wonder to his tedious kid flick Night at the Museum. Now he's back with another baffling, sure-to-be crowd pleaser, and while Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian has much better effects than the prior outing, the story -- and some of the casting -- seems geared toward destroying any amount of visual goodwill accrued. read the full review

Gettysburg-Battle and the Address (Blu-ray) | | | | Format: Blu-Ray DVD Release Date: 10/13/2009 | | Gettysburg - The Battle and the Address - Blu-Ray DVD Review By: Dusty Somers - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 4/10/2009 11:01 PM | | I’m not a huge history buff, but I find the Civil War in general and the Battle of Gettysburg in particular rather fascinating, especially from a military strategy point of view. There have been plenty of documentaries on the subjects over the years, so this latest pair of Discovery Channel programs approaches a very full table, and does little to leave much of an impact. Gettysburg: The Battle that Changed the World is the 50-minute long part one that tries to provide an overarching look at the conflict, as well as the entire war to some extent, but feels woefully disconnected and nowhere near comprehensive. read the full review

Run, Forrest, run! It sure seemed great at the time, but Gump is aging, and it's starting to show a wrinkle or too. Recently I sat down to watch the double-disc DVD release, and I still found it fresh and smile-provoking, but boy if it isn't a sickly sweet experience. But what a crazy chain of events Forrest Gump has spawned: a poorly-received book sequel, a restaurant chain, and hordes of imitators -- not to mention a critical backlash. Why? Forrest Gump certainly plays to the sucker inside all of us, a tale of how a person can overcome any obstacle if he only tries hard enough. read the full review

Decades after the last shot was fired, filmmakers continue to find intriguing narrative passages into WWII. The latest, Edward Zwick's Defiance, tells the true story of the Bielskis, three Jewish brothers who, in 1941, avoided capture by the Germans and fled to Poland's Lipicanzia Forest. Willing to help as many fellow exiles as possible, Tuvia (Daniel Craig), Zus (Liev Schreiber), and Asael (Jamie Bell) formed what eventually came to be known as the Otriad, a mobile community that grew to encompass 1,200 Jewish refugees. The Otriad provided food, shelter, safety, and a moderate sense of stability. There were rules and guidelines, which bred harmony and conflict. read the full review

| | 36. Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music, Ultimate Collector's Edition (The Director's Cut) | | | Director: Michael Wadleigh | | Format: DVD Release Date: 6/9/2009 | | Woodstock - DVD Review By: Pete Croatto - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews Published on: 5/29/2009 2:39 PM | |
The appeal of Woodstock isn't as a concert film, though there are some great performances that hold up 40 years later. The film is a historical document, representing the zenith of the peace and love movement of the 1960s, and music's integral role in that equation. If you were born in the '70s or '80s, your take on the 1960s might consist of news clips and cultural caricatures. Director Michael Wadleigh sets the record straight. For those whose musical history begins with Fall Out Boy, Woodstock was a three-day festival of "peace and music" held in upstate New York 40 years ago. All of the big musical acts of the day performed: Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, and The Who. read the full review
