Just like religion and the U.S. Constitution, science fiction has remained popular while losing much of its meaning. Sci fi has never been bigger than it is today, but unlike the fifties -- when even the lamest creature features carried "messages" about nuclear anxiety or the nobility of space exploration -- today's sci-fi movies and TV series don't have much to say. At best, they are action/drama series with intergalactic settings. The hugely successful Star Trek franchise has been part of that transition. read the full review

The show will air in 2010, but the network has put out a teaser film-version of the pilot episode. read the full review

Dark City | | | Starring: Kiefer Sutherland Rufus Sewell Director: Alex Proyas | | Format: DVD Release Date: 4/28/2009 | | Dark City (Director's Cut) - DVD Review By: Dan Schneider - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 5/21/2009 5:02 PM | | Australian filmmaker Alex Proyas’s 1998 film Dark City has been compared to many prior science fiction films, from Metropolis to Blade Runner, but, simply put, it’s better than those films. The comparison to Blade Runner, especially, is inapt, because that film is all style and little substance -- a claim made of Dark City, but, in truth, the film is mostly substance, with style about the edges. Yet, the style is so memorable that viewers and critics have had a hard time realizing it is a film that is original fiction, and not based upon a comic strip, as the urban legend goes. read the full review

People tend to measure the quality of a Star Trek movie in relation to those near it in the cycle. Compared to episodes before (5 and 7) and those that followed (9 and 10), this eighth installment of the unkillable series is surprisingly watchable. Jonthan "Riker" Frakes is at the helm this time, taking the Next Generation crew on its first mission without the original series cast. The setup comes fast, as Frakes trots out one of the series' most reliable villains: The Borg. Building from the mythology set up in the series, Picard (a former Borg captive) has a serious axe to grind, and when Starfleet ends up in a skirmish with an invading Borg ship, he defies orders and engages them in battle. read the full review

| | 33. Fountain (Fullscreen) new! | | | Starring: Rachel Weisz Hugh Jackman Director: Darren Aronofsky | | Format: DVD Release Date: 11/10/2009 | | The Fountain - DVD By: Daniel J. Stasiewski - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 5/14/2007 1:36 PM | | The film is one that spans a millennium. From the story of a Spanish conquistador (Hugh Jackman) sent to the Mayan territories in search for the Tree of Life to a narrative involving a man (Jackman again) traveling to a nebula in search of the Mayan underworld, the film’s ambitious scale is unbelievable. Yet the romance at the center of it all, a contemporary love story about a research scientist (once again, Jackman) trying to cure cancer to save his dying wife (Rachel Weisz), grounds the film. The combination results in revelations and heartbreaking truths about mankind.

Michael Anderson's Logan's Run is the sort of silly, lo-fi science-fiction epic that only had two choices upon its release: Become a cult hit or fade from memory by the time the audience chucked their empty popcorn bags. For some time in 1976, it landed in the former category and was considered by a certain sect to be a classic; sci-fi conventions urged guests to participate in "Runs," reenacting the film's central set-piece. A year later, Star Wars: A New Hope would be released and would usher in a whole new wave of sci-fi with its sprawling, interplanetary alternate reality, and Logan's Run became destined to register as only a minor blip on the scene. read the full review

WALL-E, the studio's ninth full-length feature and second from director Andrew Stanton, catapults to the head of Pixar's illustrious class. The enchanting tale of a lonely robot's quest for companionship is one of the studio's finest films, an absolute masterpiece that continues Pixar's initial promise to transport us to infinity and beyond. Yet even that label limits the film's staggering accomplishments. WALL-E seamlessly melds wondrous science-fiction, big-screen romance, and adolescent heart. One of the year's best films, WALL-E likely will go on to be considered one of the greatest animated movies ever created.
