This adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is one of the all-time classics in the history of cinema, and will win you a bet against nay-sayers who confidently claim there’s never been a remake as good as the original film. Shot in sepia-toned black and white, young Kansan Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) lives on a farm with her aunt and uncle, dreaming of a chance to break away, as the song goes “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.” During a tornado, she receives a bump on the head and then finds herself, her dog Toto, and her house, which landed on and killed the Wicked Witch of the East, in the magical Land of Oz, vividly brought to life by Technicolor. read the full review

Big Bang Theory-Complete 2nd Season | | | Starring: Johnny Galecki Kaley Cuoco | | Format: DVD Release Date: 9/15/2009 | | The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Second Season - DVD Review By: The Masked Movie Snobs - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 9/15/2009 8:48 PM | | The second season of the critically acclaimed comedy created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady about four nerdy geniuses and the beautiful girl next door has been released to DVD just days before season three premieres. From the very first episode you can see that this season contains a lot more character development and interaction as Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) go out on their very first and last date. During the first season, a lot of emphasis was put on the possible romance between them, so it was a little strange that they threw the two together so quickly just to rip them apart in the very next episode. read the full review

Characters died left and right in the third season of the soapy dramedy. The fatalities included two characters being shot to death, one character falling off a roof and one suicide. Needless to say, despite the misleading look of Wisteria Lane, life isn't easy for upper-middle class suburbanites in this series. read the full review

The Wizard of Oz is a classic film from an era when American studios were confident and breaking ground (within the discipline imposed by the Hays Office). Stuffed with now-familiar tropes -- the yellow brick road, the wicked witch, the emerald city -- and a supply of often-quoted lines, famous songs, and gags, the film is probably as entertaining now as it was in 1939. Oz was groundbreaking in a number of ways, most obviously in its visual impact. Movies in color had been made for a while, but most films in 1939 were still in black and white, so the gimmick of beginning in BandW and shifting to Technicolor was very effective. Some of the special effects were advanced at the time (and are still one of the movie's strengths). read the full review
