Unlike its immediate predecessors, which have retooled (Unforgiven), remade (3:10 To Yuma), revered (Open Range), and re-imagined (The Proposition) the genre, Ed Harris' Appaloosa is simply content being a good Western. It's unapologetic of its formula, unwilling to waver in its characterizations, and unhurried in its pace. It tells a story you've heard before -- more than once -- but it handles its business with rugged aplomb. That ought to be enough. But for some reason, it isn't. read the full review

Stasiewski - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 5/14/2007 1:36 PM | | The film is one that spans a millennium. From the story of a Spanish conquistador (Hugh Jackman) sent to the Mayan territories in search for the Tree of Life to a narrative involving a man (Jackman again) traveling to a nebula in search of the Mayan underworld, the film’s ambitious scale is unbelievable. Yet the romance at the center of it all, a contemporary love story about a research scientist (once again, Jackman) trying to cure cancer to save his dying wife (Rachel Weisz), grounds the film. The combination results in revelations and heartbreaking truths about mankind.

For all the talk of Stranger Than Fiction's clever Kaufmanisms, the most honest and sincere part of the film is about as clever as fireworks on the 4th of July. Harold Crick (Will Ferrell) sits at a small table in a local bakery and is coaxed into eating a freshly baked cookie with a glass of milk for dipping. There's a simplicity to the scene that speaks directly to the emotional core of the film, and speaks even more of Ferrell's talents as an actor. read the full review

With the Spider-Man films sitting out there like tarted-up, tawdry trophy wives, it's easy to forget how good a filmmaker Sam Raimi really is. If it weren't for the commercial strictures of the comic book movie, mandates which tend to stifle outright creativity, he might still be churning out the quality spine-tinglers. Instead, he's been lost in a sea of sparkle and spectacle, forgetting us fright fans who propped him up and suggested he might sell to a strict Tinseltown demo. Now, he's back crafting the kind of spook shows that made us all fall in love with him in the first place -- and Drag Me to Hell is quite an act of crazed contrition. read the full review

After almost two decades of making people laugh, writer/director Judd Apatow wants to be taken seriously. Well, somewhat seriously. He'll never fully give up the nonstop references to penises and other private parts, but ever since hitting it big with The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, the latest savior of cinematic funny business has yearned to explore the more dramatic underpinnings of the human condition -- and he's bringing old buddy and former roommate Adam Sandler along for the ride. It's just too bad then that 2009's Funny People is so unbalanced. There's two-thirds of a great film here. Sadly, the last act almost destroys everything that comes before. read the full review

At this point in the Saw series, reviews really don't matter. Frankly, this is one of the few fright franchises where audiences don't care about character development, directorial flair, or narrative invention. Instead, they want more Tobin Bell as Jigsaw, more illogical puzzle kills, and a reverse referencing that makes unimportant characters major players in later installments. To that extent, Saw V is definitely no different. Unfortunately, whatever made the first four films tolerable has been whisked away by unimaginative writing and even more pedestrian direction. read the full review

Sure, elements of the film aren’t all that stunning and there’s nothing particularly earth-shaking about this David Koepp project, but it does mark Gervais’ first opportunity to lead a picture and it is uplifting and amusing. read the full review

Volver is as subtle as a movie of this genre can get, and presents its spectators with an array of memorable truths about the challenges of everyday life. read the full review

For David Fincher, his first was his worst. An intelligent director, Fincher cut his teeth on television commercials and music videos before making his feature debut in 1992 with a forgettable and regrettable installment in the Alien franchise. It was all uphill from there. Fincher's next five films arguably are modern classics, each impressively different from its immediate predecessor. Gen X fanboys idolize him for the basement-dwelling aggressions of Fight Club. The director brought flash -- and a needed backbone -- to pulp thrillers like The Game and Panic Room. And cineastes found plenty to appreciate in the meticulous musings of Fincher's cold-case police procedural, Zodiac. read the full review

Forgive me for treading lightly through this Premonition review, but the last time I tried to discuss the film in detail, Sony reprimanded me. The reason I find this so funny is because the out-of-order thriller consciously jumbles its supernatural narrative in an effort to dodge easy explanations. You're going to want to discuss possible theories with those who've seen it, which is exactly what I planned to do while working the Premonition press junket weeks ago. read the full review

In the end, it's a very satisfying story about a friendship that, despite heavy tribulations, not only refuses to break down, but also strengthens itself and all other relationships around it.
