Imagine Street Kings as the little brother of Training Day, tagging along with an annoying sense of unintentional humor while simultaneously being loud and obnoxious. Unlike its older brother, this sleazy dirty cop thriller has no brains and no zest to bring this genre back to life. read the full review

You typically have to maintain low expectations for a comic book movie. For every Spider-Man, you get a bunch of Elektras and Daredevils. So really, what can you expect from one with a huge, B-list cast and three directors? Surprise! Sin City is a mega-violent, highly potent vial of noir crack. And judging from the riotous burst of applause at the end of our screening, one that's destined to be a Matrix-style mass-cult classic. Okay, so Sin City isn't really a comic book movie it's a graphic novel movie. And in spite of the title, the locale isn't the tourist-friendly and brightly-lit Vegas strip but "Basin City," a noir Nowheresville, a mid-century L.A. with snow flurries and dark sewers, enveloped in permanent midnight. read the full review

Some celebrities aren't meant to cross over into different mediums. While they may look good on a concert stage or in a series of small-screen comedy sketches, that doesn't mean they're headed for cinematic superstardom. Certain performers need to stay well within their audience-gauged abilities. Take Kevin James, for example. He's a wonderful stand-up comedian and a decent sitcom spouse. But put him in movies, and suddenly the limitations start showing up. This is definitely the case in Paul Blart: Mall Cop. While this PG romp is clearly aimed at a less sophisticated crowd, the comic's genial nature constantly tries to lift the material. It doesn't work. read the full review

There's something dead in Denzel Washington's eyes nearly all of the way through Ridley Scott's American Gangster, which takes what should have been a mesmerizing slice of urban historical grit and grinds it into roughly two hours of standard issue cinema. Washington is playing Frank Lucas, a real-life crime boss who for a period lasting from the late 1960s into the following decade, ran Manhattan "from 110th to 155th, river to river." A real slick character who doesn't need to strut his worth on the street, Lucas hates flash like a junkie hates rehab: It reminds him of all he truly is but doesn't want to be. read the full review
