| | 19. Fatal Attraction (Special Collector's Edition) | | | Starring: Glenn Close Michael Douglas Director: Adrian Lyne | | Format: DVD Release Date: 1/4/2005 | | Fatal Attraction - DVD Review By: Christopher Null - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews Published on: 5/29/2009 2:39 PM | |
Finally released on DVD, Fatal Attraction proves itself just as deliciously thrilling as when it was first released in 1987. Glenn Close's career got its first big boost in 1985's Jagged Edge, but her role as Fatal's Alex Forrest pushed her into stardom. She seems like a nice enough gal at the start -- though her hair could use some work, she's a witty and sexy book editor... just the right kind of gal to lure Michael Douglas's Dan Gallagher (a lawyer... married) into her bed. read the full review

For those who have been following Darren Aronofsky's career since he broke out in 2000 with Requiem for a Dream, his latest work, The Wrestler, might very well come as a bit of a shock. Unlike Requiem and 2006's The Fountain, the film does not garner its power from hyperactive editing (the former) nor grandiose flourishes of the patently ludicrous (the latter). Shot in grainy 16mm by the estimable Maryse Alberti, a cinematographer who has spent the last few years shooting documentaries, The Wrestler realigns Aronofsky as a director concerned with the slow burn of American neo-realism more than hyperactive pseudo-transcendentalism. read the full review

| | 30. Sleeping Beauty | | | Director: Clyde Geronimi | | Format: DVD Release Date: 10/7/2008 | | Sleeping Beauty (50th Anniversary Platinum Edition) - DVD Review By: Ed Perkis - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews Published on: 10/7/2008 12:21 AM | | When it was released in 1959, Sleeping Beauty was not a tremendous hit and nearly bankrupted the Disney studio. It has since been considered a classic, but I've never been as impressed with it as I am with some other films from that era. While the animation is gorgeous, it comes across as a bit sterile. Combined with the powerful, classical score (based on Tchaikovsky's ballet of the same name) it, at times, makes me feel like I'm looking at a book of beautiful pictures while an orchestra plays in the background. read the full review | |

Blazing Saddles-30th Anniversary (Special Edition) | | | Starring: Cleavon Little Gene Wilder Director: Mel Brooks | | Format: DVD Release Date: 1/16/2007 | | Blazing Saddles - DVD By: Matt Paprocki - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 1/22/2007 3:17 AM | | The greatest film comedy ever made gets a gorgeous video makeover. Mel Brooks is a comic genius. This undisputable fact is proven by Blazing Saddles, the sixth all-time greatest comedy according to the AFI and ninth when Bravo handed out their awards. Granted it wasn't Mel Brooks alone, but his ability to get past the hand of the censors was the key to this film's success then and it still is today. read the full review

| | 43. True Romance | | | Starring: Christian Slater Patricia Arquette Director: Tony Scott | | Format: DVD Release Date: 5/15/2007 | User Rating: 5 | | True Romance - DVD Review By: Jason McKiernan - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews Published on: 5/20/2009 11:40 PM | |
Pardon the unprofessional lingo, but True Romance is one of the more awesome movies of the past 20 years. It is a film about the guttural connection between the heart and soul and the blood and guts. It is a brilliant romance about people who love movies, are obsessed with Elvis, and who love so deeply that they will kill in the most heinous, merciless, cold-blooded ways. It may seem contradictory to call a movie like this both hardboiled and sweet, but True Romance is a movie that thrives on its contradictions. It is wacky, scary, violent, funny, and completely off-the-wall -- just like love itself. read the full review
