Just like religion and the U.S. Constitution, science fiction has remained popular while losing much of its meaning. Sci fi has never been bigger than it is today, but unlike the fifties -- when even the lamest creature features carried "messages" about nuclear anxiety or the nobility of space exploration -- today's sci-fi movies and TV series don't have much to say. At best, they are action/drama series with intergalactic settings. The hugely successful Star Trek franchise has been part of that transition. read the full review

Here are a short list of things I would recommend that you do rather than buy this DVD: read a book, wash your car, wash someone else's car, check out 'Battlestar Galactica', clean out your gutters, or even let your wife teach you how to scrapbook. Yes, I've sunk to the level of endorsing scrapbooking. It's just that bad. read the full review

Lilo and Stitch Big Wave Edition | | | Director: Dean DeBlois Chris Sanders | | Format: DVD Release Date: 3/24/2009 | | Lilo and Stitch - 2-Disc Big Wave Edition - DVD Review By: The Masked Movie Snobs - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 3/30/2009 5:58 AM | | On March 24th Disney released Lilo & Stitch in a 2-Disc Big Wave edition. This 85-minute animated film was a huge success when it was released in June of 2002, and is still an interesting and visually exciting film, but this new release appears to be, well, stitched together. Lilo & Stitch take the E.T. formula and turns it upside down as the aggressive and nearly indestructible genetic experiment 626 escapes his prison sentence, makes his way to Earth, and is adopted by the also aggressive Lilo, who loves her unusual-looking dog. read the full review

There are three essential elements for a polished Disney animated film: rich and detailed animation, inspirational music that is catchy and clever, and a clear message that is easy to understand. Alas, Disneys latest, Lilo and Stitch, fails to live up to any of these. Lilo and Stitch tells the story of two outcasts searching for a place to fit in. Lilo is a young Hawaiian girl who is shunned by her friends because she picks fights and plays unfairly. Her older sister, Nani, is raising her because their parents died in a car crash. The social worker assigned to their case has threatened to remove Lilo from Nanis care because she cannot control Lilos poor behavior. read the full review

| | 26. The Day the Earth Stood Still 2008 (Blu-ray)(3-Disc Special Edition) | | | Starring: Keanu Reeves Jennifer Connelly Director: Scott Derrickson | | Format: Blu-Ray DVD Release Date: 4/7/2009 | | Video Reviews Available: 1 | | The Day The Earth Stood Still - Blu-Ray DVD Review By: David R Perry - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 4/12/2009 12:51 PM | | I don't envy anyone who must attempt a remake of a classic film. And especially with sci-fi, because it's too easy to run afoul of obsessive types who have probably memorized whole passages of the film, analyzed it shot-by-shot to look for production gaffes, and have probably fashioned their own robots and space suits in its honor. (And if there is not already a Gort flashlight tie-in, rest assured that industrious fans are probably already on that too.) So you're basically setting yourself up for failure by even trying. If its too much like the original then it "didn't bring anything new to the story", and if you did bring something new to the story then you "butchered a classic." read the full review | |
