Just like religion and the U.S. Constitution, science fiction has remained popular while losing much of its meaning. Sci fi has never been bigger than it is today, but unlike the fifties -- when even the lamest creature features carried "messages" about nuclear anxiety or the nobility of space exploration -- today's sci-fi movies and TV series don't have much to say. At best, they are action/drama series with intergalactic settings. The hugely successful Star Trek franchise has been part of that transition. read the full review

Stargate Sg1-Season 10 | | | Starring: Amanda Tapping Ben Browder | | Format: DVD Release Date: 3/24/2009 | User Rating: 4.7 | | Stargate SG-1 Season 10 - DVD Review By: Mack Rawden - Cinema Blend DVD Reviews Published on: 8/21/2007 8:16 PM | | In all honesty, the twenty-one hours that I spent watching 'Stargate: SG-1 Season 10' was the biggest waste of time I have ever encountered. Here are a short list of things I would recommend that you do rather than buy this DVD: read a book, wash your car, wash someone else's car, check out 'Battlestar Galactica', clean out your gutters, or even let your wife teach you how to scrapbook. Yes, I've sunk to the level of endorsing scrapbooking. It's just that bad. read the full review

The Day the Earth Stood Still 2008 (Blu-ray)(3-Disc Special Edition) | | | Starring: Keanu Reeves Jennifer Connelly Director: Scott Derrickson | | Format: Blu-Ray DVD Release Date: 4/7/2009 | | Video Reviews Available: 1 | | The Day The Earth Stood Still - Blu-Ray DVD Review By: David R Perry - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 4/12/2009 12:51 PM | | I don't envy anyone who must attempt a remake of a classic film. And especially with sci-fi, because it's too easy to run afoul of obsessive types who have probably memorized whole passages of the film, analyzed it shot-by-shot to look for production gaffes, and have probably fashioned their own robots and space suits in its honor. (And if there is not already a Gort flashlight tie-in, rest assured that industrious fans are probably already on that too.) So you're basically setting yourself up for failure by even trying. If its too much like the original then it "didn't bring anything new to the story", and if you did bring something new to the story then you "butchered a classic." read the full review
