Spike Lee may be a lot of things -- a genius, a cinematic agent provocateur, a blowhard -- but you can't deny his motion picture legacy. Sure, it's inconsistent and frequently overreaching, but when you can count Malcolm X, Bamboozled, and When the Levees Broke as part of your oeuvre, you clearly deserve some kind of credence. This is especially true of Lee's original masterpiece, Do the Right Thing. When it was released in 1989, it seemed like an incendiary indictment of a nation unconcerned with the growing racial tensions simmering beneath the social surface. Oddly enough, 20 years later, it's as prescient as ever, regardless of who's currently sitting in the White House. read the full review | |
