Hollywood has found a new cash cow, though the use of the latter term might get more than a few supposedly chauvinistic critics in trouble. The modern woman, sick of the same old sloppy rom-com rationalizations, has decided to go gourmand. Like Veruca Salt in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, she wants it all and she wants it now. Oh course, back in the '70s, said little girl was considered a brat. Today, she is the reigning glamour queen of conspicuous consumption. A perfect example of this ideal is Rebecca Bloomwood. The heroine of P.J. Hogan's adaptation of Sophia Kinsella's Confessions of a Shopaholic, this spunky career gal wants a cushy job, a suave boyfriend, an understanding best bud, and an unlimited credit line. read the full review

In 1988, with his stock trading at an all-time high, Eddie Murphy outdid even himself with Coming to America. In the wake of a triptych of movies (The Golden Child, Beverly Hills Cop II, and the standup flick Eddie Murphy: Raw) hated by critics but consumed voraciously by his expanding audience, Murphy ditched the vulgar street-smart routine for African royalty and New York romance. And Coming to America became Murphy's biggest hit at the time in spite of pure, unadulterated wholesomeness. read the full review

It's no stretch to call Adam McKay's Step Brothers the year's stupidest film. Part of me feels bad labeling it as such, but then I remember that no movie boasting scenes of a grown man licking dog feces really wants to be taken seriously on any level. And yet, I'd be lying if I told you Brothers didn't make me laugh. read the full review

Death at a Funeral sees Oz returning quite comfortably to comedy without all the trappings of an A-list cast. It sees him returning to ensemble comedy for the first time since The Muppets Take Manhattan. And while Matthew MacFayden's Daniel may not be Kermit the Frog (although they both end up herding goofy supporting characters), Death at a Funeral is no less satisfying for its trouble though I don't remember Fozzy Bear ever wandering around naked and tripping on a rooftop.
