Unlike its immediate predecessors, which have retooled (Unforgiven), remade (3:10 To Yuma), revered (Open Range), and re-imagined (The Proposition) the genre, Ed Harris' Appaloosa is simply content being a good Western. It's unapologetic of its formula, unwilling to waver in its characterizations, and unhurried in its pace. It tells a story you've heard before -- more than once -- but it handles its business with rugged aplomb. That ought to be enough. But for some reason, it isn't. read the full review

Blazing Saddles (HD) new! | | | Starring: Cleavon Little Gene Wilder Director: Mel Brooks | | Format: High Definition DVD Release Date: 11/13/2009 | User Rating: 5 | | Blazing Saddles - DVD By: Matt Paprocki - Blogcritics.org Reviews Published on: 1/22/2007 3:17 AM | | The greatest film comedy ever made gets a gorgeous video makeover. Mel Brooks is a comic genius. This undisputable fact is proven by Blazing Saddles, the sixth all-time greatest comedy according to the AFI and ninth when Bravo handed out their awards. Granted it wasn't Mel Brooks alone, but his ability to get past the hand of the censors was the key to this film's success then and it still is today. read the full review

Dominik's adaptation of Ron Hansen's novel begins near the end of Jesse's criminal career. Elder brother Frank (Sam Shepard) has agreed to one more train heist. The James gang -- in need of local muscle -- recruits an inadequate group which includes star-struck brother Charley (Sam Rockwell) and Robert Ford (Affleck). Following the job, Robert worms his way into Jesse's confidence, lighting a lengthy fuse on a powder keg of idol worship that will consume the lives of many men along the way. read the full review

Howard Hawks's penultimate film is a canny reshuffling of his own Rio Bravo as he performs a loose and extended mediation on his favorite themes of loyalty and professionalism. John Wayne plays Cole Thornton, a gun for hire claiming a job with a land-grabbing cattle baron (Ed Asner). Cole accepts the job until he finds out that his old pal J.P. Harrah (Robert Mitchum, in one of his finest late career performances) is the town sheriff. Cole switches sides but not before being shot by a put-upon rancher's daughter, Joey (Michele Carey), who thinks Cole is still working for Jason. With the bullet lodged near his spine, Cole rejects a risky operation and leaves town looking for work. read the full review
