The German actress Nina Hoss has been playing muse to director Christian Petzold for the last few years. In both Petzold's creepy romance Yella and Jerichow, the director's spin on The Postman Always Rings Twice, Hoss has been the haunting central presence, but she has never pulled focus from her director's careful aesthetic. Mel Gibson presents an amazing recreation of the Mayan world for Apocolypto; at least, the viewer would have to think so, not really knowing much about that world. The obvious effort and skill that went into sets, hair, make-up, and costumes on what looks like thousands of lead and background characters is impressive. The technical and artistic crew has much to be proud about. They should also be a little pissed that Gibson-the-director turned their work into an uncensored episode of 'Cops: The Mayan Beat.' read the full review

The use of a Japanese point-of-view for the movie isn't as groundbreaking as it seems. It still pushes the same themes seen in almost all recent war movies. That the enemy is just like you; a guy with a wife and an unborn kid, a commander who wants to both do his duty and protect his men, a man who did so much before this battle and will never do anything after it.
