Something humongous is among us! A young boy rescues a huge robot which has rocketed to earth from space - and tries to protect the genial giant from a nosey government agent and the military. A captivating animated feature that's part metal, part magic and all heart.
Editor's Note
Based on poet Ted Hughes' 1968 children's book, former SIMPSONS producer Brad Bird's adaptation proves to be a work of art the family can enjoy together--simple and visually captivating enough for kids and sharp and touching enough for adults. Hogarth is a young boy in 1950s Maine. When he finds a kind and very large robot (of unknown origin), a strong bond of friendship is formed between the two. It isn't long, however, until a government agent is on their trail, wanting to destory the robot. A beautifully rendered fable.

5 of 5 Not just animation.... Art 7/3/2002
T Davis from Sycamore, IL
I had heard for a while that the Iron Giant was a great film and one of the best cartoon movies ever made. After watching it, all the rave reviews were correct. I was amazed at how much I began to feel for the giant, a truly lovable and symapthetic character. And finally, a not overly-cutsy story involving a kid and his single mom. Anyone could agree that the deer scene is particularly poignant and we see that the giant does infact have a soul. Buy this movie.

5 of 5 Animation film at its best 3/11/2000
Jackie Dan from Louisville, KY
Finally, a non-Disney-ish animated feature that the family can TRULY enjoy together. A mature story about a boy and the 50-ft. robot he befriends, this movie accomplishes reaching the hearts of viewers without sappy musical numbers. Believe me, this is one you need to buy.

This movie was so good I tell all my friends, forget the kids, its a great movie period !!
Takes place during the cold war and Sputnik has just been launched. Junk dealer is a lovable character, wish I knew whose voice it is. Will make you laugh, will make you cry and everthing inbetween.

5 of 5 It was great. 1/8/2000

Great kids film. Managed to handle important moral issues like death without making the topic either too sappy or unimportant. The direction and story flowed well, and it kept me interested. Great 50's like art style too.

5 of 5 Not just for kids...truly underrated classic!!! 12/14/1999
from Columbus, Ohio
You will be pleasantly surprised at this film, and will realize that despite poor marketing while in theaters (catered strictly to young boys), it is appropriate for all ages. This is a thoroughly enjoyable film, which I am happy to say is my favorite animated film ever, just slightly beating out 'Beauty and the Beast' (and I am a 30 year old male). Warner Brothers thankfully skipped the usual, tired Disney formula. There are no goofy musical numbers or cutesy sidekicks in this film. The mix of conventional and CG animation is superb. While a tad corny, the Iron Giant tugs at your heart strings, and takes a strong moral stance against guns and violence that is appropriate for all ages. I bought the DVD the day it was released and have watched it with my daughter over 6 times! Hope you enjoy it too.

4.7 of 5 Best animated movie I've seen... 12/3/1999
anthonygarza from San Antonio, Texas
This movie proves Disney does not hold the patent on great animated movies. I'm not digging on them (I have a three year old and own all their movies,) but it's refreshing to see an animated movie that doesn't break down into a song and dance number every 5 minutes.
This movie combines animation with CG (computer-generated) images. They put them together so well you can't tell which is which. At first glance, it looks very disarmingly hand-drawn, but as the movie continues, it includes many special effects which visually enhance it to a depth you weren't expecting.
The story itself carries a great message for kids. Some say it's anti-violence, but I felt it stated something more general: that you can choose your actions, and in so doing, can choose who you want to be.
It's got some great humor even adults can appreciate, and must be pretty good overall - I read it cleaned up at the annual animation awards: taking 9 awards, and chosen most outstanding.
I read Warner Brothers spent some 80 million making it, and it didn't make it back at the box office. That's a pity, because we know the dollar rules. I would buy two copies of the movie if I thought it would help more movies like this one to be produced.

5 of 5 Disney, eat your heart out! 12/3/1999
from San Antonio, Texas
This is not your average kids' movie. It stands above most others in that the moral is presented in a practical way without making the storytelling too 'mushy'. The characters are not shallow or boring (even though some are a bit cliched), and the plot is not too predictable. The basic point of the movie is that we can go against our very natures to become whatever we choose, and violence is never an acceptable solution to any problem. What I particularly appreciate (as a mother of 3 small kids) is this anti-violence message presented in a movie that is well written and entertaining to kids without being too preachy or fantasy-filled. The Iron Giant is a terrific movie.

5 of 5 Why haven't you seen this yet? 12/2/1999
Tunehead from Santa Ana, CA
Wow, what a fabulous film! Top-notch cg animation seamlessly combined with stylistic traditional two-dimensional animation. The simple yet powerful story is one for every age, smart enough for adults, rambunctious enough for kids. Do yourself a favor and check this movie out, don't let the lack of support that Warner gave it in promotion during their 'Wild West' waste of promotion dollars flop summer… this is the Warner film that should have had the multi-million dollar ad campaign. Iron Giant most definitely has the enduring qualities of a great film classic.

5 of 5 BEST MOVIE OF 1999! 11/26/1999
CmcCubicle from Williamsburg, VA
Flawless animation is perfectly blended with a classic story about a boy and his robot. WB captures the feel of the Batman animated series with extremely effective blacks and whites as well as amazing use of lighting. The screenplay is outstanding with well-defined characters who you will immediately cheer for: 9-year old Hogarth Hughes (wonderfully voiced by Eli Marienthal) is 100 % boy, from his scruffy hair to his chipped front tooth (a great touch, by the way). Mom, Dean, even G-man Kent McCoppin are all well written. The feel of the 1950’s is also captured in a nutshell. Little touches like soda shops, badly acted sci-fi movies, comic books, and bomb scare propaganda films are brilliantly inserted. Forgive my melodrama, but Hogarth and I were both 9 years old for 81 minutes as I soaked in this movie. Months later, I cannot think of one single problem I have with The Iron Giant, an instant classic and a movie I am so proud exists. Funny, I just said I was 'proud' of something that I had no involvement in creating. But that's exactly how I feel, given the oceans of garbage posing as 'entertainment' these days.

4.3 of 5 Cartoons aren't just for kids 11/23/1999
Jeremy A. from Dallas, TX
The Iron Giant is an excellent cartoon. It took some of the great elements of old-time science fiction movies and broke the typical cartoon mold (No sappy music. No talking animals). The quality of the animation was excellent, the voicing was very good. I highly recommend this one as a cartoon that both kids and adults can love.

5 of 5 For children & adults. 11/17/1999
from Golden, CO
Half way through the movie my 3yr old son turns to me as states that this is his favorite movie. This movie is for everyone, especially for anyone who likes animation. There is not one bad thing I could say about this movie. Much better than anything Disney has put out over the last few years.

5 of 5 The Best Animated Movie You Probably Never Saw 11/16/1999
from Bel Air, MD
I cannot begin to tell you how good 'The Iron Giant' is. If Disney had put it out, it would probably have become more popular than 'The Lion King' - it's just THAT good a movie. See it. . .borrow, beg, or steal(well, not steal) a copy. . .it's worth your time and your child's time to watch a great family movie together. Enjoy!
