After wandering around the Black Hills Forest, Heather, Josh, and Mike are cold, lost and hunted. Finally, one night after the last ray of light had left the forest black, they were never to be seen again. One year later, a bag full of film cans, DAT tapes, and video tapes were found. The behind the scenes, video footage and the film, are cut together, and this is... The Blair Witch Project. Editor's Note
Made for $30,000 by two young filmmakers from Florida, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT wowed festival audiences for several months before finding distribution at the 1999 Sundance Festival. It is an ingenious creation which makes effective use of its lack of budget and cast of unknowns. The film is composed entirely of reportedly "found" footage shot by three missing college students who made a journey to the woods of Western Maryland in 1994 with the purpose of making a documentary about a "witch" of local legend who is linked to murders and mysterious occurrences spanning 200 years. It begins with footage of the crew leaving their homes and testing their equipment, but before we know it, they are lost deep in the endless woods, with the voices of screaming children piercing the blackness from off in the distance. Things get worse from there. The experience is disorienting and frightening as well as the most rewarding horror film experience to come along in many years, as it wisely chooses to prey on our vulnerable imaginations rather than bombard us with graphic images.

When i saw it i kept waiting for something to happen and then it ended... I thought the idea of making the documentary be the movie was cool and different and the sticks tied together to look like people was also a good tool but i hated the ending and how you never acutally saw any enemy.. makes it seem kind of not real... Good idea but horribly carried out. Was this review helpful?

I first saw this movie before there was much talk about it so I had the good fortune to see it before the incredible praise it got, thus, I wasn't let down when I saw it. On the contrary, during the night scenes, I found myself incredibly tense and scared & isn't that what a good FILM does. Things left to the imagination (of someone with a good imagination) are far more scary than anything shown or spoon fed. We get to know the characters very well before anything happens. That's another quality of a good film. I've rented the DVD & the scene selection menu makes the DVD a must have for fans. Also includes the mini documentary originally shown on SCI-FI channel that was shown before the movies release & explains the controversial ending. After I watched the documentary & understood the ending more, it became even scarier & made me want to watch the film again which I did & enjoyed it more. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 The Scariest movie I've ever seen Sunday, December 05, 1999 Janell from Sitka, Alaska

4 of 5 Made my husband cry Saturday, November 27, 1999 Linda from Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
Originally, I thought the movie would be pretty hokey and it sometimes was. But as it turns out, it's the lead girl who bugs ya the most. SHUT UP!!!! already!!! you wanna scream. Anyway, it keeps you watching and the final scene is very creepy! Like I said, it scared the heck out of my husband. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 pretty cool Thursday, November 04, 1999 cloudalone from Hope Mills, NC
I saw this film in the theatre, and for some reason, I remember it being better than it seemed when I bought this DVD. However, it's very original and I would consider it a fun ride. There's a ton of extras on the disc, but it's still less than I expected. As for whether or not you should buy this, well, I'm picky about what DVDs I buy, and I own it. Was this review helpful?

It's true. Most so-called horror films are just boringly predictable special effect movies that have the plot spoonfed to the audience because the filmakers have so much contempt for the intelligence of the audience.
Blair Witch doesn't spoonfeed the audience, there are no special effects and it doesn't follow the predictable formula. It's not the best movie ever but while it didn't terrify me it did keep me on the edge of my seat - something no horror movie has done for far too many years. It used psychological horror rather than waving a rubber puppet at the audience (which is what passes for horror in most Hollywood films). Was this review helpful?

the movie itself stunk, not scary and stupid to run for your life with the camera on, poor poor poor everything involving this disaster movieanyone with half a brain can produce this kind of hoax, mark my words they will come out of hidding soon to collect. so save your money and dont even rent it. funny how the police didn't go out of the way looking for them. so stay tune for the blair bitch 2 coming your way soon out of the woods on the way to the bank. 5 of 5 A Masterpiece Wednesday, October 27, 1999 Brian from Layton, Utah
Everything a horror film should be and more. A visit to the movie's website sets the stage and the mood for this wonderful film. When you believe its real, the movie takes on a life of its own and the horror is personal. You are in the woods with our three victims and your participate in their nightmare. If you're expecting Hollywood schlock, you'll be disappointed. If you see at as a documentary, you'll jump at every sound afterwards. Was this review helpful?

Blair Witch Project is ultimately an amazing film. With great, not to mention realistic, acting. The fact half the fear is produced by your own mind, adds even more horror to the already terrifying movie. The ending is the best part, it gives you the abil Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Unique Spin on Whisper Down the Alley Tales Friday, October 22, 1999 Chris Overley from Brooklyn, New York
We have stories of the haunted house at the end of the street or the spooky woods we can't cross through. This story is not unique, but the way it's told is without a doubt the closest anyone can come to expeirencing a true urban, suburban and even rural myth without having to be there.
The writing and direction of the film has also created a landmark in film history. No other story has ever been told with this style in film making. A mock-documentary about a mock-documentary student film, about a mock folk myth.
Brilliant! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Great Concept Friday, October 22, 1999 Mikeybop from New Bedford MA
Dark and twisted from a unique perspective! Gives the 'you are there feeling' Plays off of an urband legend setting you up for the surprise ending! Ending was great for this kind of story line - The film could not leave the audience with a 'wonderful feeling type ending' It could not tie up the loose strings (Which is what was intended) This type of ending sours American viewing audiences! 4 of 5 REVIEW FOR THE VIDEO, NOT MOVIE Thursday, October 21, 1999 A Viewer from Burlington WA
See it for yourself, the previous reviews are on the movie NOT the video or DVD. Sometimes the video is better than the movie. I know I enjoyed it more as I didn't get sick from the actors frantically swinging the camera around. The question remains, who killed the 3 students and where are their remains? 5 of 5 Blair Witch: A good scare Thursday, October 21, 1999 James from Atlanta
With the excellent 'back story', this is one little scary tale, just in time for Halloween! There are no special effects, CGI creatures or monsters, just good old fashioned mind games! It will have you rethink your next camping trip. Plus it does contain the well done 'Curse of the Blair Witch' which is almost better than the movie! They really stay in character! Get this one! With the movie done on video cameras, it should be perfect for the small screen! Was this review helpful?

I saw this in the theatre and it was the biggest waste of 7 bucks and 90 minutes in my life. I totally bought into the hype about how good and scarey this movie was, but it was aboslutely horrible and not scarey! I almost dozed off on several occassions and was half tempted to leave because of how slow, boring, and utterly stupid the movie was. As I was walking out of the theatre I couldn't help but notice everybody else shared my feelings about the movie. This movie was definitely all hype and I don't see how anybody can give it more than a 2. If I could have given it a 0 I would have. Don't waste your money folks! Was this review helpful?

The concept sounded great and couldn't wait to see it....saw it......couldn't wait to leave the theater. Very few surprises..ending was weak! I think all the ingredients were there for a great film experience but the final product was really lacking in content. Don't buy the 'art film' reviews. Marketing made this movie a success...the movie made it a rip-off! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Blair Witch; an original, scary little film Sunday, October 17, 1999 Phantom982 from Clayton, Ca
The fake documentary that blew away audiences is a very clever film. Made for very little, it became a marketing phenomonon. Though not as scary as some say, it is suspensful and funny up until the last scene, which is incredibly creepy, and leaves the viewer to wonder...what exactly happened? Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Hit or Miss Thursday, October 14, 1999 Davey from San Jose, CA
You either loved the movie or hated it. Most of the people that hated were the ones who like Friday the 13th, while the ones who loved it liked
the Sixth Sense. This movie is not one of those scare you with blood movies, but a movie to scare you using your mind. Much like 'Event Horizon' I say if you have a open mind buy it but if you don't rent it. Was this review helpful?
2 of 5 A story to scare 8-year olds Wednesday, October 13, 1999 Really, show the scary parts now, from Dallas, Texas
This movie reminded me of stories I told 8-year olds on camping trips. So it was sort of kewl to watch it on the big screen. But 'come on' it was meant to scare 8-year olds in to behaving not adults. I do have to say that the movie was very predictable except for the losing the map epic long scene. The first person view was a change that I liked. My final words, see it so you can say you have, buy it if you like collecting bad movies, but don't recommend it to others. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 True divider of those that appreciate art of film Wednesday, October 13, 1999 Chocochunks from Denver, CO
It's raw. It's blunt. It's pure. And it's brilliant. Fake documentaries up to this point have been parodies -- as in This Is Spinal Tap. Blair has taken the fake-umentary on a whole new path, and succeeded tremendously. It's definitely a love-or-hate film, and a true test of your ability to handle motion-sickness. Those I know who love the film are people who can wholy displace their reality and immerse themselves in a film. They can see and feel film art whether they are able to express it or not. Those I know that don't care for it, or outwardly hate, watch movies for a kick or brief escape and as simple entertainment. Their top 10 favorite movie list includes Independence Day, Godzilla, and Robin Hood: Prince of Theives. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Film! Must See! 2 Thumbs Up! Friday, October 08, 1999 King Kamehameha from Punaluu, Hawaii
Well you either loved it or hated it. But I have found one thing true about the opinions formed on this movie. The people that loved it had something in common. They were creative, intelligent, and in most cases had a higher education. But the ones that hated it were typical average ordinary types. People with limited educations and not much going on in their lives. Sad but true! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Job Well Done....Take a Bow!!!!! Thursday, October 07, 1999 Raymond Thomas from Atlanta, GA.
I hesitated to watch the movie at first because of the camera movement, but I'm glad my curiosity took over. Great story. I especially love the fact that there was no music. No looking away as the music builds, you must watch.Very few if any horror movie cliches.you gotta love that. Again well done. P.S. For anyone who discussed the movie afterwards saying: Man what would you do in a case like that? Myself, after Josh disappeared I would have stayed near the creek and started a forest fire. 5 of 5 Don't goto the woods!!! Monday, October 04, 1999 SCOOBY = NULIFE90 from CHICAGO, IL.
Well I thought it was a great movie. What made me mad was the fact thatttttt... there was a mist of suspense for the end. Another thing isss the fact that whoever you speak to regarding the movie, will tell you different versions of what they think happened. I'll say this... I don't care 'who' you are but, you'll never know what truly happened in this movie...story-wise, plot-wise; unless your the actors or the director himself. The movie is a must-see for suspense. Get your copy before Halloween. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Worth seeing over and over!! Monday, October 04, 1999 Lisa from Vinton, Iowa
I feel that this movie was wonderful. It is nice to see a movie that was so captivating and it made you wonder what was around the corner. I checked out all the web sites before going to see the movie and I feel that having that knowledge before I went to the movie really helped me understand it more. I knew some of the things that were going to happen before they did and I was still sitting on the edge of my seat scared out of my wits!! I think that if you love scary suspensful movies this is one that you can't miss!! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Blair Witch Project : a good Halloween party movie Friday, October 01, 1999 mrbillneb from lincoln, ne
Yes, i know... You either jumped on the 'I hated the camera work' bandwagon or you liked the movie due to its home video 'feel' to it as I did. True, the camera does bounce around quite alot at times but i didn't hear about anyone ralphing during Saving Private Ryan because of the camera work, just from the awful realism of those guys on the beach and what they had put up with.
I liked the scenes where their campgrounds were being attacked. Very creepy if you would be watching it late at night. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 I liked it! Thursday, September 30, 1999 Evan from Allen, Texas
This is one of those movies that separates the intelligent movie-goer from the herd following 'show me some eye-candy' special effects movie-goer. Great flick with a great premise and very slickly done! Anyone who says they didn't like this should go back to waiting for the next Will Smith movie to come out and quit giving this film bad press!! 5 of 5 Blair Witch welcome in my collection! Sunday, September 26, 1999 Matt from Evanston, IL
Just try to make a movie with your camcorder. 99 percent of the time, whatever you make will be terrible. The people who made this film have the art of film down. I'm talking about realism that draws you in, making your eyes widen as you await the outcome of the group's next overnight terror. Sure, most people aren't used to mpvies with shaky camcorder cinematography and the absence of sex, gore, and special effects, but if you think about what the creator is going for, this movie is so realistically frightening. Imagine you just found this film lying in the woods and you are the first person to watch it. Then, after watching it, go spend the night in the woods miles from civilization. Forget Hollywood special effects and super high budgets. This is film. Perfect. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Beware of the Blair lair! Sunday, September 26, 1999 Rob from orlando, fl
This may not be all that scary but it does offer a provacatively eerie ride. It is almost a guilty pleasure watching the three filmakers grapple with the prospect of death. I think that this movie taps into the secret fears that we all have or deny having. This one makes you think. Every word is important and intergral to understanding the film's end. One thing is for sure always carry a map. Was this review helpful?

I swear, there must be 3 or four different versions of this movie in the theatres. The one I saw was, by far, the worst movie I have ever seen. The only part that disturbed me about that movie was that I couldn't believe I wasted $6.75 and 1 and a half hours on it. If you want to see a movie with a good plot, don't see this one. it has NONE. if you want to see a lot of action, don't see this one. it has NONE. if you want to see a scay movie, don't see this one. it is NOT scary. The movie actually made me feel like going camping in the woods, rather than the other way around. I mean, I heard it was a great movie, so i went to see it. what a waste. I hope noone else wastes their time with this thing, I just kept hoping that it would get better. noone in our theatre liked it, but I do give those kids credit for making as much money as they did on that piece of crap. Headache Headache Headache!!! I was dizzy almost the whole way throughout the movie! Acting was terrible. If crap like that was happening to me with all those freaky signs and graves...I wouldn't keep the camera on and recording every single thing out there...I'd drop everything...keep everything I needed...and just like hell. Plot was junk...Never got to find the witch...Don't waster your money...go buy the Matrix! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Movie Marketing Moguls Beware of Blair Monday, September 20, 1999 A Viewer from TN
The Blair Witch Project was perhaps the cheapest, in-your-face suspense/horror movie that I have ever seen - and I've been watching horror flicks for about 25 years. Being cheap is its selling point and presenting it as 'real'. The main aspect that 'sold' me was the marketing scheme behind the movie. If Cameron or Woo could make the same percentage of profit on their movies, they could pay off the national debt! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 the spookiest movie ever!! Monday, September 20, 1999 chuck1999 from bates city mo
simply the spookiest movies ever made. there are two ways to enjoy this film. 1. watch and study the filmmaking 2. listen to the background sounds. either way. if this film does not disturb you, then you do not know the difference from a movie and a film. this is a great FILM! 5 of 5 If Hollywood could only make them this way. Sunday, September 19, 1999 Russ from Milford, NH
It's too bad all the negative reviews I read are concerned with the lighting (it was supposed to be happening ad hoc folks not with light meters etc.), camera movement (ad hoc, hand held, no tripods. Get it?), and lost map scene(s). It was realistic. I saw it back to back with 'The Haunting' and Blair Witch spoiled me for the special effects overkill in Haunting. All the horror happened in your head which is why some viewer don't get the movie. They need to be spoon fed a movie. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 This movie is the best horror flick in a long time Sunday, September 19, 1999 Gino from Terre Haute, IN
I see a lot of horror films, and this is the only one that I've ever seen where I should've brought Tums along! If you do not have an imagination, you will not like this film. What's scary is what you do not see. Also, if you think they aren't actors, the intensity is much greater. Buy it! Was this review helpful?
1 of 5 What Garbage. Thursday, September 16, 1999 CF from Springfield, NJ
Probably one of the worst movie's i've seen. The only, only thing i give it was that it was original. The movie dragged horribly, and really
wasn't scary.. I wanted my $8 back from the theatre.. and the fact that the movie company tried to play it off like it really happened is even more pathetic. Save your money and go buy the matrix. Was this review helpful?
1 of 5 Blair Retch Project Thursday, September 16, 1999 Randy from Boston, Mass
I feel like I could have made this movie. I could barely make scenes out from the shaking camera, and in those few moments that I did see something, it was usually a tree or a rock. Ooooh, scary. I would have enjoyed this film far more if they all died in the first five minutes and ended my misery. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Blair Witch an intelligent, disturbing film Wednesday, September 15, 1999 A Viewer from
Nevermind the low-budget,nevermind the heavy camera movements, it all adds to the horror. The Blair Witch Project is one of the most intelligent horror films of all time. It doesn't sell you with nudity or gore it is horror at its purist form. Blair Witch uses our own fears of the unknown to keep are eyes open and heart pumping. From the moment these students enter the woods you feel like your right there with them and that is where the horror lies.............within. Was this review helpful?
2 of 5 Don't forget the Dramamine! Wednesday, September 15, 1999 A Viewer from Atlanta, GA
If you watch this movie be sure to take something for motion sickness. I'm not sure about this special camera that they were so protective of...your basic $400 home video camera will produce a much higher quality and less bouncy picture. The idea for the story is great. I would like to see the Hollywood remake. Take out about 45 minutes of 'Oh, no, where's the map' and add some substance with more spookyness, then you would have a pretty good movie. 4 of 5 A Suspenseful movie with a crazy twist Tuesday, September 14, 1999 MrXero37 from Buffalo Grove
This was the most original idea for a movie that could possibly come out of the whole decade, kudos to the directors. Granted that some of the camera work was a bit shaky, it also made the movie more believeable than having everything perfect. If I wasn't told that this film was not true, it not only would have scared the living begeezus out of me I'd be afraid to ever walk alone in the forest again. Bad parts of the movie...... it dragged on at some parts, which was necessary to make it full legnth. So no other choice there otherwise people would complain that the movie was too short. This DVD should be awesome! Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Didn't live up to the hype for me Saturday, September 11, 1999 dootrw from N. Huntingdon, PA
They should have called this movie 'Running through the woods for an hour and a half with a home video camera'. I did think that the acting was good and the ending was, along with The 6th Sense, one of the best I've ever seen, however, I could have done without the headache of watching the bouncing camera. It was a well written movie with an amazing ending, but I just couldn't stomach the camera work. Was this review helpful?

I think back to the night that I watched this video--yes, not film--in the theatre and often wonder why I didn't leave early. But the reason for that I suppose is the same reason for which I've given a rating of 1--because I'm a hopeful person. I hoped that the movie would improve and I hope I never see a movie that is worse. A film is a meticulously crafted piece of art. A couple of kids from film school giving a couple other kids a camera and putting them in the woods and trying to scare them does not constitute a film. I'm so sick of hearing that this is an example of film getting back to its roots . . . who the hell are they kidding, when did Edison or the Lumieres ever use a handheld camera with no regard for what was being filmed. I suppose what I'm so upset about is complete apathy towards creating an artwork. This is not a film, at best it is an experiment. At worst, it is excrement. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Not a movie, but a journey into fear itself Thursday, September 09, 1999 A Viewer from Utah
when I was a child we moved into an old house. The girl who lived in the house previously was 2 years older and went to the same Junior High School. Sometimes when i saw her in the hallways at school, she would actually walk off in the other direction as though to avoid me. One day she comes up to me and tells me why they moved out of the house. With sunken eyes, she says, 'you know the bedroom they added to the far end of the basement.? Every once in a while, something visited me while I was asleep.. he would hover in the corner and call out my name until I woke up and saw him sitting in the corner. Thats why we had to move out of that house'
That room she described was now my room. That girl never spoke or even looked at me ever again. The Blair Witch film gets close to the kind of horror I experienced that night as I tried my best to fall asleep in that room. Dreading that at any moment the devil himself might appear and call out my name. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Imagine... Wednesday, September 08, 1999 Eric from San Diego
Fear is in your mind, not on the screen. We can only be 'so' scared by loud bangs, spurting blood, and suggestive music and situations. The pure unknown in Blair Witch is what is scary. We don't know what is going on. Expect nothing less than a few sleepless nights following this movie. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 A creative phenomena to be judged on its own merit Tuesday, September 07, 1999 brundlefly76 from santa clara, ca
This movie is one of the greatest inspirations in the creative arts. 5 people took $35k and kept me riveted to me seat for an hour - more than any movie I have seen for years. Some people were unimpressed but it that does not detract from the experience most people had during this film, which in most cases was singular. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Either you like it or hate it. Sunday, September 05, 1999 Douglas Lorenz from Sacramento
This is the most unique movie I have ever seen. Without the special effects or the cookie cutter plot line found in all the predictible major studio works, the movie pulls you in to the action. This movie has none of the vivid bloodshed in other horror movies. All of the suspense is created within the mind of the viewer. For this reason, people that 'get it' love the movie, and people that don't will hate it. There is no middle ground.
By the way, if you are subject to motion sickness, then you may want to take care when watching this one on a big screen. The shakycam effect is interesting, but can get to you... Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 finally, something different Friday, September 03, 1999 A Viewer from Atlanta, GA
The plot and the acting make up for the erratic camera movements and less than spectacular shot selections. Probably why actors don't actually run the cameras in most films. Some would argue that it makes the film feel more like a real documentary, but I would argue that the same effect can be achieved without making the audience nauseous. Nonetheless, a great film. 5 of 5 Not knowing is what really kicks it off... Thursday, September 02, 1999 A Viewer from Bossier City, LA
Not knowing if the people in the movie actually died is what makes The Blair Witch Project a really interesting film. In the days before the film was released, a lot of controversy existed about the disappearance of the students. As we all realize, Hollywood is desperately trying to think up new ideas, and even though this movie is fake, suspense and thrill overcome the viewer. The only major problem is an occasional period of time when nothing really happens. Watch it in the dark. Was this review helpful?
