Jim Carrey is Chip Douglas, cable installer. Raised on television sitcoms, he wants life to look just like "My Three Sons." And when he meets single guy Steven Kovacs (Matthew Broderick), he sees his chance for some serious male bonding. But Chip's idea of friendship - which includes physical assault, a game of 'Porno Password' and medieval joust - may be hazardous to Steven's health. In Chip's own immortal words, "I can be your best friend...or your worst enemy."

Editor's Note

When a young urbanite calls to order cable TV for his apartment he gets much more than he bargained for, as the demented title character arrives and proceeds to insinuate his way into the beleaguered customer's life. Raised by television as a child and starved for human contact, the "cable guy" is a darkly hilarious carnation of the modern age. Carey's manic karaoke rendition of Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love" is a twisted highlight.

Plot Summary

When Steven Kovacs orders cable TV for his apartment, he has no idea how much he'll regret it. That's because the installer sent to his home is Chip Douglas, a lonely, lisping, parasitic geek, who just might be psychotic. Chip immediately bonds with vulnerable milquetoast Steve -- and then refuses to leave him alone. Chip's wild behavior proceeds to make his victim's life a living hell, and even jeopardizes Steve's attempt to reconcile with his girlfriend. | How far will Chip go... and will Steve ever put his foot down?

Box Office Magazine 8 of 10
What makes this film work so well is the oblique, dark, psycho edge Jim Carrey brings to the role, skillfully balancing funny with scary... One minute he's a charismatic kook performing hilarious karaoke to a Jefferson Airplane classic, and the next, he's a self-appointed hitman... - Christine James

4 of 5 Jim Carrey's Most Under-rated Film Monday, March 20, 2000
http://www.geocities.com/carboiii/CINEMACITE.html from Lewisville, Tx

I don't feel like this film got the publicity it deserved. I know it was dark and not all happy like, 'The Mask' or 'Dumb and Dumber,' but it wasn't meant to be a kid's film, thus the 'R' rating. The film even had a message, 'don't let your tv, raise your child.' The film was dark in parts, but also hysterical in others. I fell off the couch a few times, the first time I saw it. Everyone who has seen it, will remember the 'basketball' scene. If you haven't seen it, see it for that, if not the rest of the film, you won't be dissapointed.
