| | | Features: DVD WARNING: TOXIC JOCULARITY ENCLOSED. Inside this decorative carton lurk four seasons of Monty Python's Flying Circus, two new-to-DVD documentaries, two Monty Python Live performances, and six Personal Best compilations. The whole great mess--Spam tins, parrot carcasses, blancmanges, and all--has been safely digitized, compressed into microscopic "funny bits," pressed onto 21 shiny discs, and sealed within this whimsy-proof receptacle.SO DON'T OPEN IT! All right, if you must. But beware: there's new material you can't repeat verbatim (yet). Before the Flying Circus employs rare vintage footage to explore the influences that shaped six young lunatics into the world's most innovative comedy troupe, while Monty Python Conquers America documents their tremendous, yet astonishingly unlikely, American success. The six Personal Best collections present the best sketches and songs, as selected, arranged, and hosted by the individual Pythons themselves. And, of course, Monty Python Live shows what happens when absurd TV sketches are inflicted on live audiences. Now stop reading and put a disc in your DVD machine. This bloody box of buffoonery can't watch itself. "Without the boys from Britain, we might not have SCTV, The Kids in the Hall, or the still-running-strong Saturday Night Live." FilmCritic.com "...at turns silly, bawdy, slapstick, tasteless, bizarre, and thoroughly British." Nicholas Sylvain, DVD Verdict "In the heavenly hierarchy of humor, Monty Python's Flying Circus is God." PopMatters "...a wild blast of off-the-wall humor that is surprisingly potent and highly recommended..." Preston Jones, DVD Talk "They cover the full spectrum of comedy, everything from the extremely intellectual to the extremely rude and primordial..." The Movie Hooligan
 Editor's Note
It seems impossible that the monumental, rambunctious comedy of MONTY PYTHON'S FLYING CIRCUS could be contained in a single set, but it's all here: the cheese shop, Atilla the Nun, the dead parrot, and even the fish-slapping dance. In one fell swoop, fans can trace the troupe's Absurdist arcs, and revel in the inimitable talents of Cleese, Palin, Jones, Idle, Chapman, and Gilliam, collectively the most celebrated sketch comics of the modern era. This more-than-complete collection includes every single episode from the legendary show's four-year run on the BBC, as well as four additional performances and rarities: LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL, MONTY PYTHON LIVE AT ASPEN, PARROT SKETCH NOT INCLUDED, and MONTY PYTHON'S FLIEGENDER ZIRKUS. For fans who crave a glorious death-blow of even more Python material, the set offers a "Pythonism" glossary and an art gallery of Terry Gilliam's animations.

 | Monty Python's Flying Circus: The Complete Series - DVD Reviews By: Bill Gibron - filmcritic.com DVD Reviews Published on: 11/7/2008 4:31 PM | |
In the history of sketch comedy, Monty Python's Flying Circus stands as The Beatles of humor. Not only were members Michael Palin, Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Jones, Eric Idle, and Terry Gilliam geniuses at the short skit format, but they redefined the configuration and expanded its realm of possibilities. Celebrated like rock stars and elevated to the status of gods, such success begs the question: does the origin of this myth --- i.e. the TV show from several decades ago -- still hold up. The answer, without a doubt, is a resounding yes....read the full review |

Monty Python is classic, and old television. Expect much and you may be disappointed. Expect Monty Python and be pleasantly pleased. It is as it bills itself - unique and unpredictable; uncomplicated, but strangely enough. But why take my word for it? Get it. Your mum still wouldn't want you to watch it! Was this review helpful?

When I ordered this set, the site said it was In Stock. The next day, I received an e-mail about a "problem" with my order, that it would be delayed. It ended up being delayed A MONTH. I didn't cancel the order because it wasn't a Christmas gift and it was such a good price. (This seems to be an ongoing theme with Buy.com - the item I just ordered a few days ago claimed to be "In Stock", but once again, the e-mail of disappointment has arrived.)
That being said, this set is GREAT. All the episodes, lots of fun "extras" on each disc of episodes, and a separate box set with lots of bonus materials that I haven't even had time to watch yet. The only thing that annoys me is having to sit through the little "theme song / A&E promo" at the beginning of each disc (it can't be skipped) but it's only about a minute.
One of the more gratifying experiences was watching this with my 21 year old daughter, and her finding parts of it hysterically funny. She's usually a tough sell on Mom's favorite (old) comedies, but this one she actually enjoyed without bugging me to turn it off because it's "stupid". Python truly does withstand the test of time, because I was actually laughing out loud at some of the bits (the "pantomime horse" in particular).
