3 of 5 Beware claims of "expandable memory" Thursday, July 24, 2008
JimInPT from Washington (the good one, not D.C.)
Contrary to what you may think, the Zen's SD flash-memory slot does NOT allow integrated memory expansion - owners are reporting that it's essentially useless as it does not integrate with the main database memory at all. If you don't need additional capacity, this isn't an issue, but do NOT assume you can add memory to the Zen and have it work the way you wish. There are hundreds of posts on Creative's support forum about this; Creative remains mute in the face of overwhelming customer dissatisfaction regarding this issue: http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=dap&thread.id=199672

3 of 5 Not as Creative claims Tuesday, May 06, 2008
bvollrath2112 from Cologne MN
I am writing this to inform people because I had no idea that the Zen cannot play Nero AAC. I am sure other people will be in this same situation. On Creative's web site they say it plays unprotected AAC format. It will not play Nero AAC which is unprotected. I do not think that Creative should be able to falsely misrepresent their product like this. It is very misleading. I have written to Creative's customer support. They responded back by saying my files had some kind of Digital Rights Management (which they do not). I wrote back again and they responded by giving me tips on how to use iTunes Plus which is irrelevant to what I am doing. Originally, to get the music onto my PC, I used Exact Audio Copy and saved them directly as FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Compression). I used Foobar2000 with the free Nero Digital AAC codec 1.1.34.2 to convert these files to AAC. I know there is no DRM involved of any kind. AAC has better sound quality than MP3, but that is a whole different issue altogether. The fact is Creative is claiming that the Zen will play unprotected AAC files and it does not. I feel like Creative is getting away with this misrepresenting their product. They should not be able to do this. Someone did make an app that changes some coding with the tag that make the Zen work with the Nero AAC files. You can find out more here http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=dap&thread.id=207028&view=by_date_ascending&page=1 When I turn off my player while it is playing a song, it will lock up. I do not think this is normal. If I pause the song, before I turn off the unit. It will not lock up. Other than these things, the player is good. Great sound quality and a high resolution display. The custom EQ is very convenient to adjust the sound to how I want it.

5 of 5 Big Thing...Small Package Friday, May 02, 2008
A Customer from Detroit
Unit came when expected and works great, even syncs right up on my XP X64 Machine! No work-a-rounds necessary. Try and find someone to say that about a Zune... I know I had one for a week. I did also get the 3 pack of skins and screen protectors which I highly recommend as the black lacquer like finish on the front seems like it may scratch easily. The sound is great even when plugged into the car stereo or an older home unit in my garage, have not tried it on my home stereo so I can not comment on the sound of MP3s through a higher end systems. Also, I am using my Shure E4c in ears so I can not comment on the buds in the box. I can say the little Zen drives the heck out of the E4c's, no distortion great low end and the highs are crisp but not raw or overpowering. The video screen is not the reason I purchased the unit though, I have used it for Zen (POD) Casts and they are clear and bright, most acceptable. The menu is easy to navigate and very intuitive. Plus because it is customizable once you figure out what you need you can put the folders in your preferred order (even pulling 2nd level folders to the main list i.e. putting "Random Play All" at the top of the 1st menu instead of in the DJ folder 1/2 way down the list)and you can turn the others folders off and on as needed. all Though the price is still a bit high, for me it is well worth the money for something that sounds this good, is this small, with no spinning hard drive, and 32GB of storage. The Zen 32GB has been a great purchase.

5 of 5 Creative Zen Rocks! Tuesday, April 15, 2008
A Customer from Birmingham, AL
I had the Creative Zen Vision and thought it was really good but it was a little big and bulky. It was marvelous to take pictures and view, but this Creative Zen is just perfect! It is small, easy to use, holds lots of easy to view pictures, good sound, and can carry all my addresses and phone numbers after syncing with my 2007 Microsoft Outlook. I love it - it's about the size of a credit card and works great!

5 of 5 I got it to replace a Clix. It blew away my iPod Monday, March 24, 2008
A Customer from Chicago, IL
I've got a 80Gig iPod Video and a 160Gig Archos 605; I love them both. I have a large number of CDs, LPs and videos ripped; the iPod is about 85% used up. I like a wide music selection on my players so storage capacity is important to me. The health club I belong to transmits TV over FM. I wanted something with a digital FM receiver that I could use in the club and when running outdoors. I have an iRiver Clix that I got as a gift from a vendor. It has digital FM but it doesn't have enough storage and it is pretty thick. I've had other Creative players since they first came out. The Zen sounded amazing, had 32Gig storage plus add-on SD storage capability. I decided to buy one to replace the iRiver. I must say that this little Zen ended up blowing everything away. It's small, easy to use, has great capacity, gets good FM reception, plays videos and pictures, has a friendly interface, reasonable support software, and optionally synchs with Windows Media Player. Bottom line: it met or exceeded my expectations.

5 of 5 Great product for the price! Saturday, March 22, 2008
Dotun from MD
I've had my Zen for over two weeks now, and I just can't stop using it and showing it to my friends. Each time I do so, I get the same reaction of amazement at the capacity and how tiny and practicaly compact it really is. Most people I know who already have iPods always exhibit some level of regret at not been aware of this product before getting their ipods, and rightly so too, because this device will give you everything a comparable iPod will and more. The battery life is AMAZING!! Plus you're not bogged down by the annoying iTunes software or restricted media format, or losing all your media whenever you sync to another host. With the Zen, simply plug into your PC, with or wothout the supplied software and you're good to copy in most video & audio formats. I would recommend it for anyone looking to buy an mp3 player.

5 of 5 Great player....better than Nano!!! Tuesday, March 18, 2008
A Customer from Cleveland, Ohio
I really enjoy this little fella! The sound quality is nice, very easy to use, and best of all is that I don't have to be strapped to getting music from Itunes. The storage capacity is great and the screen...crystal clear. Don't get me wrong, I like my Nano....but I love this guy!

4 of 5 10,000 Songs Wednesday, March 12, 2008
A Customer from Monterey, California
I have an extensive music library that I thought would be fun to carry around in my pocket. So now I can. I also have a couple of books on the Zen. That's a lot of stuff on a tiny thing about as big as a credit card. So is it worth it? Yes if you need that much space for music or video or both. Music play is very good. The screen is very good for showing snapshot size pix. The interface (buttons and slides) takes a bit of getting used to, and if you have sausage fingers as I do, you end up using your finger nail to work. Unfortunately that practice has already dulled the plastic finish on the front buttons and interface area. The screen software works well and is intuitive. The Zen is a little slow starting and two start screens display before you get to what you wanted. It's nice that it turns on to where you left it when you last turned it off. Maximum volume is good, not stellar. The two outstanding features of the Zen are the battery life and the transfer speed of media. Wooie it's fast. Zen Media Explorer is very slick. Syncing with Windows Media Player 11 is an absolute breeze. Syncing with Audible was a pain. Suffice it to say I had to unload and reload Audible Manager to get it to sync. This is a problem with Audible not Zen, but a problem nonetheless. The included headphones sound very good, but they are the kind I have difficulty wearing. I prefer earbuds or regular phones. There are no other extras and that is a bit troubling, because this thing will scratch in a heartbeat and appears fragile. I bought a custom case for it (another review). That wasn't really satisfactory so I have it within another tiny phone case that has a strap. This combo works well, but remember to tack on another $20 to the cost of the Zen for these extras. The Zen comes with a USB cord a little longer than my pinky finger. I'm not kidding. I added an extender. Again that's it. If you need to charge this from an electrical outlet, you will need to spend another $30 or so on a charger. I have an assortment of chargers and one from an old Dell PPC that allows me to charge the unit from an electrical outlet. Do some research before you buy a new charger. You may have one already that will work fine.

4 of 5 knocks out the nano Tuesday, March 11, 2008
A Customer from Berkeley, CA
I had an iPod Nano, which I did like a lot, but I prefer this one rather confidently. The Nano does have better software, but it lacks the radio and audio recording (don't forget the 32gb and the SD slot). As well, I actually <strong><em>prefer</em></strong> the Zen's 4-way directional pad to the scroll wheel because it is more precise (though, admittedly, less 'cool'), and Creative wisely designed Zen's software to enable you to scroll quickly and efficiently like you can with the Nano. <br>     However, battery life isn't that great (though it might just be that radio use is highly power consumptive -- not sure yet), and I wish the headphone jack were not so close to the power switch (though this is only a minor concern). <br>     Switching the player into hold mode turns off the LCD to conserve battery life, which is good. <br>     Wish the ability to make and modify playlists was less half-arsed. <br>     The software for your computer for transferring is ok, nothing special -- it works fine, transfers and plays all of my mp3 and m4a files, even those taken from iTunes libraries, all without conversion. Btw, iTunes sucks, so even if you go with the iPod, use Winamp. I don't think the Zen has particularly great support for Winamp or other music managers, but I haven't tried since the new firmware upgrade (Feb 28). Maybe I'll update this review then. <br>     It comes with its own syncing software which I've not tried (I prefer to drag and drop what I want onto (and off of) my PMPs). <br>     Overall, a sound player.

5 of 5 Great MP3 player, but lacks where you wouldn't exp Friday, February 22, 2008
William from Chicago, IL
This is an impressive MP3 player and replaced my 30GB Nomad that I had for 2 years. Bulky as it was, it still served me well (still works too, Creative gets an A+ for durability ). I looked into a slimmer alternative and I came across this gem. People who say it's as small as a credit card are lying... because it's smaller. It looks like a toy when you take it out of the box. The 2.5" display may sound small, but it's the biggest thing on this baby (aside from the memory). The SD card reader will give you a limitless supply of music, pictures, and videos. Unfortunately, it sees it as external memory and won't organize media like it would on the Zen itself.<BR><BR> The flash memory is a HUGE upgrade over the harddrive based MP3 players. They use less energy (See: longer battery life) and they don't skip around from abrupt shakes (perfect for motorcycles ^_^). Not to mention, uploading/downloading is faster and cold weather won't affect performance (harddrive based MP3 players will go into a constant reboot if the harddrive is cold).<BR><BR> Now to stay fair, there are a few downsides to this MP3 player. The first thing is apparant right when you open up the box and that's the USB cord. This thing is ridiculously short! From tip to tip, the cord is 5"... I'm guessing it's supposed to be used for laptops. Expect to put a little more money into a longer USB to Mini-B cord assuming you don't have one. Fortunately for me, my Nomad came with a 6' cord.<BR><BR> Secondly, the Zen Explorer software isn't what I thought it would be. You can't edit multiple track information on the Zen! Why does this blow my mind? Because the Nomad Explorer software did. This is a definite nightmare if you don't have an organized library.<BR><BR> There is no standalone charger for the Zen, but you can easily charge it from any Mini-USB charger which is handy if you have a phone with the same port. Another neat thing is that this player will charge from your computer EVEN if your computer is OFF! Very cool.<BR><BR> Pros: Slim, sleek design; Flash memory; Long battery life; Amazing display.<BR><BR> Cons: Short USB cord; Software is lacking.<BR><BR> Other: Buy a hard case. You'd hate to get this baby scratched!
