5 of 5 customers found this review helpful. 3 of 5 Not quite up to date... Tuesday, February 26, 2008 A Customer from Melbourne, FL
This review is based on research, not ownership.
No HDMI connection, just component (*YPrPb, 3x RCA).
No 1080p support (*only 1080i).
Limited audio and video support:
*Music: Mp3, WMA, WMA Pro, WMA lossless, WMA-DRM, PCM WAV uncompressed
*Video: Windows Media 9, WMV-DRM, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVI, DivX, XviD
*HD Video: Windows Media 9 up to 1080i, Windows Media 9 DRM up to 1080i, MPEG-2 up to 1080i, DivX up to 1080i
Depenedent on PC based media S/W: *UPnP AV compatible media server (recommended: Windows Media Player 11, Windows Media Connect 2).
I expect that digital audio formats such as DTS or DD5.1 are passed through to the S/PDIF outputs, requiring an external audio receiver that can decode those formats.
With no mention of specific HD video codecs (e.g., VC-1, H.264, etc.), the MPEG-4 AVC standards, or supported bit rates, it is hard to know just what this HD player can really handle. With the recent release of the Sigma 863x family of video processing chips, I believe that there will soon be new HD media players available that surpass the capabilities of this player. My advice is if you are interested in playing high bitrate HD video, then do your research and read the forums before making any purchase decisions.
