Adam Sandler (Click) and Kevin James (Hitch) team as two straight guys who stumble down the aisle with the best of intentions in I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. Chuck Levine (Sandler) and Larry Valentine (James) are the pride of their fire station: two guy's guys always side-by-side and willing to do anything for each other. Salt-of-the-earth widower Larry wants just one thing: to protect his family. His buddy Chuck also wants one thing: to enjoy the single life.

Grateful Chuck owes Larry for saving his life in a fire, and Larry calls in that favor big time when civic red tape prevents him from naming his own two kids as his life insurance beneficiaries. All that Chuck has to do is claim to be Larry's domestic partner on some city forms. Easy. Nobody will ever know.

But when an overzealous, spot-checking bereaucrat (Jessica Biel) becomes suspicious, the new couple's arrangement becomes a citywide issue and goes from confidential to front page news. Forced to improvise as love-struck newlyweds, Chuck and Larry must now fumble through a hilarious charade of domestic bliss under one roof. After surviving their mandatory honeymoon and dodging the threat of exposure, the well-intentioned con men discover that sticking together in your time of need is what truly makes a family.

"Funny in the juvenile, crass way we expect."  Connie Ogle, Miami Herald
"Tremendously savvy in its stupid way, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry is as eloquent as "Brokeback Mountain," and even more radical."  Nathan Lee, The Village Voice

Editor's Note

Two comedy dynamos unite in this comedy from director Dennis Dugan (PARENTHOOD, HAPPY GILMORE). Brooklyn firefighters Larry Valentine (Kevin James) and Chuck Levine (Adam Sandler) have watched each other's back since they met in the Academy even though they are different as can be. Playboy Chuck can't get enough of the ladies and they can't get enough of him. Larry, meanwhile, is a widower raising two young children and still grieving the death of his wife. When Larry saves Chuck's life on a call, he comes up with a unique way for his buddy to repay him: having missed the opportunity to name his children beneficiaries, he asks Chuck to act as his domestic partner so that his children will be provided for if tragedy strikes. But these two buddies soon find themselves the subject of an investigation by the city. Enter Alex McDonough (Jessica Biel), their highly attractive attorney who leaves Chuck desperately wishing he wasn't pretending to be gay.

Initially, Chuck and Larry are as guilty of making stereotypical gay jokes as the next average Joe. In fact, pretty much any and every gay joke and stereotype turns up in this film. But their attitudes change when the shoe is on the other foot and they find themselves and their new gay friends the subject of discrimination, mocking and name-calling. Ving Rhames, Steve Buscemi, Richard Chamberlain, and Nicholas Turturro have supporting roles, and musicians Lance Bass and Dave Matthews make brief appearances. SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE alumni also abound: watch for Rachel Dratch, David Spade, and Rob Schneider in small roles, while Dan Akroyd plays the boys' captain.

"I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK...delivers bursts of successful humour..." 12/01/2007 p.71

ReelViews 6 of 10
It would be interesting to know what contribution (if any) credited screenwriter Alexander Payne (Election, Sideways) made to the final draft of I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. Except for the cloying, strident preachiness of the third act, this seems to be a standard issue Adam Sandler outing, with occasional bouts of laughter becoming bogged down by sophomoric jokes that aren't as funny as the production team expected them to be. Perhaps concerned that the overload of gay jokes might offend some audience members, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry turns into a full defense of gay rights and an applause of gay culture, including appearances by Lance Bass and Richard Chamberlain...I suspect there's a core group of Sandler boosters who will watch the film and conclude that it's okay but not one of their hero's better efforts. For the rest of us, this is a hypocritical mess. I'm tempted to rip into the movie but I'm not going to because I didn't hate it as much as I have hated other things recently (License to Wed comes to mind) and it did make me laugh a few times. It's largely a mediocre, forgettable effort until it implodes in the final ten minutes. There's nothing here to appreciate for anyone who isn't a Sandler fan and, unfortunately, too little even for those who have dubbed themselves lifelong supporters. - James Berardinelli
