Western Digital 1TB My Book Essential USB 2.0 External Hard Drive

Even though the price dropped 50% after i purchased, i feel that it was a great buy. But i feel that the speed is a bit low (provided i use USB 2.0).

this is a great hard drive so far except for one small bug: it can't work on a home network that shares pc's and macs. it's not meant for that and so while you can partition the drive to be formatted for both machines and use time machine in the mac one, you must plug it in to each machine respectively in order for it to work. i had hoped to just throw it into the airport extreme router but alas, for now it'll be plugged and unplugged as needed to my macbook pro and the pc my hubby uses. disk utility made the partitioning easy and also customer service was good with minimal wait time to speak to someone.

Order Date: 7/1/2008 Bought it almost a year ago and plugged it to my XP laptop which is connected to my TV. Constantly adding photos, movies and music to it. Read files (music) almost 4hr everyday and watch movies almost every week. Close to 700MB full now. Touch wood... it has been continuously ON all these months and constantly used. Have another 500MB drive from WD attached to same laptop for downloads. Bought before this and still working. Thanks WD folks for a solid device.

i know that alot of people are giving this thing high reviews but it must be because they rated this thing after having it for one day. over time i have had nothing but problems with this drive. i have had it replaced just to have it quite on me a few days after. wish i saw reviews on other sites explaining the problems people have been having with wd drives. now im stuck with trying to find the receipt once again to send it back and wait another month and a half to get it back.starting to think that wd got its employees to rave over it

My first external hard drive came from some mediocre brand and it broke on me in a year, taking away all of my high school pictures and academic work. I then realized how important external hard drives are (duh) so I invested in a WD passport 250G; it hasn't failed me since, even after it was dropped nearly 4ft above ground (college craziness). Since getting this 1T I have been equally happy; I sound like I'm trying to sell you the brand but it is actually that awesome. This new product, like my other one, has never given me any trouble.

Even when it access spped is a bit slow for what I would consider desirable, this HD is sturdy, works OK and does its job. I purchased it mainly as a backup unit, thus it´s really OK for me. I miss, however, an ON-OFF switch, something that wouldn´t cost too much for WD to include and would help, and a vertical stand adaptor as many other units provide. Overall, I recommen this product.

Buy.com sent the last Western Digital Hard Drive in less than 24 hours. I only requested express shipping. Boy! That is fast. I own (4) different size Hard Drives from Western Digital. (2) 500 gig (1) 680 gig and (1) T-bite. (2) I use at work, and they work very well and (2) at Home for my Dish Network High Definition back up DVR machines they also work very well. These Hard drives are very useful for both methods of memory. I highly recommend this product and Buy.Com will diliver.

I bought the hard drive a couple of weeks ago and finally hooked it up. No problems! Easy to install. Just plugged it into a usb port. Copied my pictures and files over to save space on our aging computer. The computer immediately recognized it and I was in business! This will be a great, safe place to store our memories. Great price for the product!

WD of course makes good stuff. This sleek 1TB hard-drive blew my mind and it is saving my gigs. I have music and videos on it and playback is seamless.

After I received this hard drive, I set it up with my computer just to see if there was a problem and found none. Then I hooked it up to use as an extended hard drive for my DVR. It has worked flawlessly, as does a 500 GB model I also own. Easy to set up, reasonably priced, and no problems whatsoever--can't ask for more.

I bought it with a little hesitation after reading other comments. As of now I can say it is an excellent product. I recomend it and I am planning to buy anoiither one soon. One thing do, format to NTFS it will work better.

I have never had such an easy time with a product. I bought it to use with my DVR. I plugged it in, my DVR formatted it and I was good to go. I have only had it for a couple of weeks but it has worked flawlessly for me. I would recommend this item highly.

Product is quiet and easy to use, but you better read the manual. The drive is formatted for fat32 and limits the size of the drive, so you have to format it to NTFS before you get full use of the drive. This drive Satisfied all my needs and I have all my computers backed up on it.

I am very pleased with the product. Just a month before I bought this WD HDD, I had purchased a Seagate 1 TB HDD for $137. In comparison,I find the WD faster and easy to use. I was able to setup and use it within 3 min of opening the package. I've been using it for more than two weeks now without any issues. A power on button would have been nice but is only a minor limitation. I would say it is a value for money product.

I was very satisfied with this product. The only confusing thing was the optional program that came with it, the Memeo back-up system, but I think I have a handle on that now. I would definitely buy this product again. Great product at a great price!

The inner hard disk is quite small compared to the casing - guess they could have made it slimmer. Works good enough and certainly I like the automatic off feature on this one.

this is a great hd to store your photos, music etc on...I put it to work using it as a mirror drive backup, plus the other stuff....quiet, hardly know it's there doing it's thing....it was on sale when I bought it, and have never seen a lower price on it, anywhere....plus free shipping

This drive works fine. Quick format works quick and full format takes longer. No surprise there! This drive is NOT a 'portable' to be carried around with you. The case is not designed for that but, rather, to be on a shelf. Western Digital makes good drives. End of story.

My review will be the same as the others. Good brand, good price, extremely fast shipping... Opened the box, immediately formatted NTFS - no problems. In fact, I have had no problems with the unit so far, other than the already reported issue of the computer not booting when it is attached. There is probably a fix for that, but I haven't spent the time on it yet.

Other than the unnecessary packaged software, this hard drive is fantastic. It's not too bulky. It's very fast. And, it's well priced. I got the buy.com deal for $100 which makes this 1tb HD a steal!

This little hd is great! It's small and compact yet very sturdy. Moving files back and forth from it are quite quick with the cord they provide. I am very pleased with my purchase and would definitely refer this product to my friends and family!

For the price, you just can't beat this drive. PROs - Quiet, fast, and very stylish. Suprisingly small too. Tons of capacity. Very portable dispite the external power supply. CONs - none yet. COMMENT - Comes formatted with FAT32. Wish they would format the thing with NTFS. A terabyte takes quite some time to reformat. Just leave it overnight. :-)

This hard drive is great it's size makes it easy to take with my laptop when I go to school. Being the size of a paperback book is great. the convience of using it between computers at home school and work has proven to be a real asset.

Really simple to use, we have now backed up the entire contents of three computers with lots of room to spare. It's reassuring to know that if anything crashes, restoring will be just as simple.

I have no complaints about this 1TB external hard drive from Western Digital. It was easy to setup & use so far it's been doing a great job of backing up my important files. The price was not too bad either I highly recommend this product to anyone who needs additional storage.

I originally intended to use the massive amount of storage for storing my Music, Video and Photos. But I now use it to ghost my 2 internal 320 GB drives with room to spare! Sleek design, easy hookup and quiet. Wonderful!

The price was right. It got here in 2 days. It has a power saving feature that can slow you down just a bit at times, but it's not really that big of a deal. It just took me a few minutes to get used to it.

The price was amazing, the drive arrived very quickly, and it was easy to install. The reason I gave Ease of Use only a 4 is because I needed to re-format the drive from FAT32 to NTFS. But that process is outlined on the Western Digital website and is easy to follow. One note on the re-formatting: my understanding is that NOT using the quick format is preferred. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase.

I bought one of these when the price was $150 and loved the drive. So when I seen it for $99.00 it was a no brainer. I really like the sleep mode the drive has when it’s not in active use. The drive always spins up quickly when accessed. The only bad part I would say is that the drive comes formatted as FAT 32 and these days that just doesn't make sense as most movie files will exceed 4GB and that’s the limit to FAT 32 files. So you will need to re-format the drive to NTFS if this is one of your issues as well. Remember to copy off the software the drive comes with so you don't lose it.

The drive is quiet and compact. I have 3 external. 2-300GB and 1-1TB. It is operating as my primary drive. Set up in 5 minutes. Only issue I have seen is that is extended my boot up time from 60 seconds to 3 minutes.

One Terabit is a lot of memory but this compact book size WD drive is a great value and easy to install and use. Since I purchased it for use as a back up drive, I had to reformate the disk to NTFS which was also straight forward though time consuming. I am very pleased with my decision to get this product.

bought it on sale, got it in 2 days, unwrapped it, formatted to NTFS in 2 min and now I have 1TB to backup my data too. Simple, easy to use, sexy, quiet and loads of room.

This is the fourth WD MyBook drive I have purchased in the past 2 years. As external HD's go, it has a pleasing form factor and so far all of my drives have been very reliable. However, most of my drives (including this one) are used for offline storage and backup, and so they aren't spun up the majority of the time. For archival storage, backup, etc., the MyBook is a great solution. There are cheaper drives and more full-featured drives (eSATA, FireWire), but this one works nicely. Agree with other reviewers that WD should ship the drive with NFS format, not FAT32 - it took a LONG time to format 1TB.

I already have a 320 GB external USB hard drive from WD, but it was filling up fast. I desperately needed more storage for my photos and videos, and the 1TB drive from WD seemed like a bargain at just over $100. So far, it has performed as expected. The drive has the same plug-and-play ease as the previous one I own, and I am completely satisfied with the look and reliability of WD drives.

I think the Maxtor OneTouch™ 4 Plus is alot better unit,You don't have to pay extra for the backup program like you do with the WD products.I Have both and I prefer the maxtor
