You know it as the ultimate handheld gaming system—the place to play the very best in portable games. You may even know that the PSP® (PlayStation® Portable) system can do a bunch of other things as well. The thing is, once you've held all this in the palm of your hand, you won't ever be the same. The PSP® system has a boatload of talents, including:
Gaming - Over 350 titles—and more coming all the time. The PSP® system's game list already includes the ultimate in portable games, hands down. Pretty much any kind of game you've heard of. The game is definitely on with new offerings from fan faves like God of War ®: Chains of Olympus, Pursuit Force™: Extreme Justice and MLB 08 The Show™ plus cool all-new stuff like Patapon™, Wipeout: Pulse™ and more. The variety of games should keep you busy, and the variety of ways to play means the game is on—whenever, wherever and however you say it is!
Video - More than 460 feature films, TV programs and music videos available on UMD™ disc (each sold seperately). Your PSP® is not playing games. OK, it's not playing games all the time; you can use it to do a ton of other cool (and highly useful) things when you're not in game mode. It beats carrying around a separate gadget to:
- Watch movies and videos: If it's saved to your Memory Stick Duo™, you can play it on your PSP anywhere. Save a good movie or homemade video for a long ride or trip. Or while away the hours with one of the many UMD™ movies you can get for the PSP® system.
- Show photos: Show off with a cool slide show of all your favorite digital pics or beam your photos via Wi-Fi to another PSP®.
- Listen to music: Play your MP3s, WAVs, WMA and ATRAC3+ files, and MP4s on your PSP®. It's your handheld, personal background music to go.
- Get online: Check your email on the go and keep up with the blogs, RSS, news feeds and podcasts you can't live without.
Network - Communicate with other PSP® systems, play games online, browse the Web and more. Download PSP® games, demos, videos, themes and more from the PLAYSTATION®Store for the PSP® system. Create a free PLAYSTATION®Network account from your PC and visit your one-stop shop for downloadable content for your PSP.

5 of 5 Great game 1/8/2009
from Frisco, TX
I bought this for my husband for Christmas. He usually plays Medal of Honor but I thought he might enjoy a hand held game he could take with him when he travels for work. He absolutely loves it!

5 of 5 Worth it, if you can use all the features. 7/28/2008
from Belton, Texas
Since the original psp, Sony has made a few changes. First off, the UMD door is no longer spring loaded. You simply pull it open with the end of your finger, and literally drop the UMD inside. The Wifi switch has moved to the the top of the unit, and the memory stick door has been redesigned and repositioned to a higher spot on the side of the unit. The infra red emitter has been removed (it was never used on the original), and the psp is now able to slowly charge the unit through USB.
Of course the unit also sports video out, and is slightly but noticeable slimmer and lighter. Finally the unit also has 64MB of on board memory for firmware (original only had 32MB). To the consumer this means that future firmware features for the PSP will be exclusive to the slim only. At this time the only feature to be slim exclusive is the Skype functionality. The ram was also doubled to 64MB in the slim. This allows the web browser to run more efficiently and for the slim to load certain games faster.
One of the primary reasons the slim PSP came out was to lower manufacturing costs. If you own the original you will immediately notice that the slim is cheaper on the aesthetics. Both sides of the unit are made from the same shiny black plastic, and the LEDs on the surface are no longer perfectly flush with the face plate. Furthermore the shiny plastic is just not the same as the kind that was used on the original. However, none of this has caused any functional issues.
Video out when used with component cables works quite satisfactorily. Any XMB functions will fill the entire screen of the TV. But, as soon as you start a game the output will shrink to about half the TV screen size. Most HDTVs do have a stretch function which should solve this issue. Otherwise the games look as good as you would expect. Sound is outputted through the TV as well. The main downfall is that even though the PSP can decode video at a resolution of 720x480 (720p), it will not output at that resolution. Instead the PSP outputs at 480p no matter what the circumstance. By the way, you cannot play games on a TV via the composite cables, so don't buy them.
In conclusion, if you don't have a PSP yet, you should definitely get the slim over the original, and buy the Intec component psp video out cables with it.
