Works great. It does give some misguided directions that an updated map may fix.

4.3 of 5 Simple GPS at good value 7/20/2008
Josh Kelly from Dallas, Texas
This is the widescreen version of the nuvi 200. The device is very user friendly, if the user was born after 1974. I can't review the manual, because I never opened it. It lasts about 5 hours on a charge, which can be done using your computer, if you have a USB connection, or using car charger cable (which is very long). It does not come with a USB cable, but I found that the one that came with my camera fit.
It is quick to recalculate if you miss a turn or decide to take a side trip for a road snack or drinks.
It is small enough that you can take it from your car and walk around with it. It is okay about food and shopping locations around. If it is a major chain, or if it has been there a while, most likely it will show up.
It doesn't have bluetooth (which I didn't require) and it is sometimes slow to acquire satellites.
I have used it around the Dallas area and the greater Boston area and it has served me well.

4 of 5 Wish I had waited! 7/11/2008
Sean from CA
I wanted a GPS without all the bells and whistles and the 200W delivered. However, the satellite aquisition has been spotty at times. My biggest complaint is with the invalid Points of Interest! I'm constantly updating my maps and being taken to places that don't exist!!!

Great GPS with big clear screen and very accurate directions. Only 'con' is not announcing actual street names; for the price you can't beat this GPS

3.7 of 5 Small Screen size 6/8/2008
from Rego Park, New York
The divice is not very user friendly.
Small screen for ' Touch-Screen ' operation
Hooking up with Satellite for signal is time consuming, particularly in parking lots
A carrying case and PLASTICIZED quick set-up card should be integral part of packet
Needs charging-up quite so frequently.
I may not reccommend to others to go for it

4.3 of 5 Decent Navigation Unit without all the bells and w 6/3/2008
from Birmingham, AL
The unit tends to take some time "Acquiring Satellites" at startup. Not ultra fancy, but the size is a plus. The unit tends to have the driver make loops instead of just one turn. This can be easily avoided by understanding the general direction that the unit wants you to go. The unit won't turn off or go into a power save mode after being on for so long. This would be helpful when in park and forgetting to turn off the unit. I have returned to my car several times with the battery dead because I forgot to turn it off.

4.7 of 5 Big Screen, Low Cost 5/27/2008
Simon W from Greenwich, CT
I was looking fo a GPS that was easy to use with a big screen and not hiked in price for a bundle of extras that would not be used. The Nuvi 200W was a perfect choice.
Set-up took less than a minute, the POIs were extensive and adding favorites a breeze. Entering addresses or searching for locations by category and/or proximity is quite fast. Screen displays and directions are very clear.
If you are looking for a basic model with a big screen then this is a sound choice. Of course you can always pay a couple of hundred more for live traffic, bluetooth, and text to speach but this GPS will get you to your destination with ease.

4.7 of 5 Garmin 200W does the job 4/26/2008
from Canon City, CO
The 200W does a good job of getting to a place you are not familiar with. However, if you live in the area you can probably get to your destination easier than the route the GPS wants to take you. It has major roads and streets it wants you to use VS. the shortest distance using roads it does not consider major. But in an unfamiliar area going by major roads or streets is probably better for you anyway. I have been satisfied with the unit and it was easy to use right out of the box.

5 of 5 Best Basic GPS for the money 4/2/2008
Frank from East Haven, CT
I now have 2 of these Garmins. One for me and one for the wife. Very easy to use. Display is clear and directions are spot-on. You can adjust almost every detail to your own liking. You can also add your own custom points, like geocaches or other poi's (points of interest) using a firewire cable from your computer (Garmin uses a tool called poi-loader from garmin.com to accomplish this). Sites like poifriend.com can be used (free) to add custom points to the gps. Would highly recommend getting this and not the regular sized screen model (without the "w"--for widescreen) as this one is 4x3 and very easy to see day or night with plenty of room to see what's up ahead. You can also update the gps software with free downloads from Garmin which you should do when you get it (maps could be almost a year old and an update will address that). If you want good gps without bluetooth or actual street names spoken to you than this is the one for you. Spend less on another brand (like I did previously) and suffer or get the best one now for a little more.

4.7 of 5 Excellent, who needs maps anymore 4/1/2008
Ray from Texas
The Nuvi is awesome. I fly out of town about twice per quarter and never bother with printing maps anymore. Nuvi has been very effective and even finds my favorite chain restaurants around my hotels. The ONLY thing that could make it better is if you could set road type preferences. BUT, just take the highway (you can see it on the nuvi screen) and it will recalculate your route based on the road you took by "mistake". Just a wonderful tool to have.

4.3 of 5 A good product, compact and easy to use 3/1/2008
from Upstate NY
Bought the Nuvi 200w for my wife, who struggles a bit with maps. I have used other Garmin GPS models, and although this one does not have all the bells and whistles of the higher dollar models, I found this one to works quite well and a good value. I liked that it was very compact and still had a wide viewable screen. I just used it for a week in San Diego, and it worked great. I did not find it too slow to start up or acquire satellites. Sound is good, and the absence of the announcing streets by name was not a big deal. My only real compliant was that the documentation is very limited, so it took a bit of trial and error to figure out some of the functions.

4 of 5 A good starter GPS 2/25/2008
Bill Davis from Mt. Laurel, NJ
I have a GPS in a 5 y/o Infiniti that was a $2000 option back then. This little GPS is far easier to use right out of the box. I gave it a 4 because it is slow to locate satellites sometimes and directions are not always the most direct, but overall this is a strong performer and a best buy in my opinion. I didn't need bluetooth or MP3 capability--so this little Garmin fits the bill.

4 of 5 I could've found something better 2/24/2008
from Fair Lawn, NJ
Pros: Very easy to use, bright large 4.3" screen, touch screen works very well
Cons: It is not voice prompted to say streets, which at times makes navigation difficult because you are constantly looking at the screen. Also, sometimes it will take you on a strange route. It takes too long for it start up and connect to the staellite. Often, the time to make a right or left isn't very clear and I end up make the turn too soon.
My recommendation would be to buy a Magellan - you can't go wrong with this brand. Buy.com is a great online retailer and I would definitely buy from them again in the future when I buy a Magellan.

5 of 5 Very pleased with Buy.com and my new Garmin!!! 2/19/2008
Keely from Atlanta, Georgia
I ordered the Garmin Nuvi 200W and had it in hand 2 days later!! Buy.com was one of the besy buying experiences I have had on the net!! I will be back!! The price for the Garmin was many dollars less than what they are going for in the stores locally here in Atlanta. I am pleased with the ease of the Garmin Nuvi 200W and am glad I bought the wide screen model.....it really is great!! The unit is easy to operate and that is what sold me on it. I highly recommend Buy.com and Garmin for choices in a GPS!!!

4.7 of 5 Good value for money 2/17/2008
AC from Plainsboro, NJ
THe Nuvi 200W worked as expected. So far we have used it in NJ and plan to use in Florida when we take our kids to Orlando in March. Easy to configure and it identified most of the points that we sought. Happy with the purchase and would recommend this for anyone looking for a simple and easy to use GPS system.

4.7 of 5 Garmin Nuvi 200W Personal Travel Assistant 2/17/2008
from Covington, VA
I recently purchased this item. I have found it to be easy to use and very helpful in giving directions. I live in a rural part of Virginia. My only complaint is regardless whether I chose fastest or shortest distance, in many instances it will take me the old highways instead of using the interstate when going to Roanoke, VA. I have compared it's directions with MapQuest and it usually takes me the same way that MapQuest directs. I usually ignore it and go the way I am used to going. It eventually recalculates. My biggest concern is how it will take me if I am somewhere that I am not familiar with.

5 of 5 One of the best GPS units 2/15/2008
Jessica from Dallas, TX
I travel constantly for work, and finally got my own GPS unit (rather than renting one on every trip). Of all the units I've used, the Garmin was the best. It's the easiest to use, clearest directions, and most accurate. I used another brand once and it gave me conflicting directions. I've never had a problem with Garmin.

5 of 5 Got to have one they are awesome 2/11/2008
jweidner1 from McAlpin, Florida
I just received my new Garmin 200W took it out of the box started it up and located the satellites and took off using it never even looked at the manual. This unit is so accurate that I used it to guide me home and I live in a very rural area, well it took me to with in 10' of my rural mail box and it said " you have arrived at you destination" Man that is great it shows dirt roads but not the numbers of them when they are in the path of your destination, but you don't need them it will tell you when to turn and when you get there. I highly recommend it to anyone who gets lost easy or just likes to mess with stuff like this.

5 of 5 pleasantly surprised! 2/6/2008
from New Albany, IN
Wow - this thing is great! I spent way too long comparing features & functions of all the different models & brands available. I'm sure they all have their pros & cons but I am completely thrilled with this purchase. I have found it to be good at quickly calculating the route if I purposely go a different way than it wants me to. Plus, it keeps the kids entertained from the back seat. Hard to beat this for the combination of price & features!

4.7 of 5 Great Quality for an amazing price 2/6/2008
from West Virginia
This is a pretty good little GPS, more accurate than i would have expected, and any technophobic persons will find its interface very friendly, maps could be a little more up to date, it shows the car flying over a white abyss for newly built malls and shopping centers. But the price its amazing, and from what ive seen its a really good quality product.

4.7 of 5 New to GPS 2/2/2008

4.7 of 5 excellent product, some initial setup issues thoug 1/31/2008
from Arlington, Virginia
especially for the price, you cant beat this GPS unit. I had difficulties getting it to run initally (wouldn't locate satellite, no matter how long I waited and how clear a day it was), which was subsequently solved by calling the Garmin help desk and being told I needed to download a software update. The unit doesn't ship with a usb cable, but luckily its the same type that my motorola mobile phone uses so I was able to download the needed update easily, otherwise it would have been a pain to have required to purchase a separate usb cable just for that purpose (I gave it 4 out of 5 for ease of use for this reason). Once up and running though, the unit is fantastic - easy to use and easy to follow while driving.

3.7 of 5 Simple to use portable GPS 1/24/2008
from Annandale, VA
****PROs****:
-- Simple to use to navigate to places
-- widescreen and visible in sunlight
-- portable, can be easily move from car to car, or to pocket while car is parked
-- SecureDigital (SD) slot to add additional maps/POI
-- Have both 2D and 3D map views
-- Have continental US maps pre-loaded
-- Calculates route in reasonable time (a couple seconds)
-- Auto zooming in near turn/exit points to your destination
-- Good value for the price
****CONs****:
-- Takes a long time to power up and load times (about 1 minute)
-- Takes a long time to acquire (locate) satellites (current position). It normally takes 1 to 3 minutes in my area.
-- Total time from turning this unit on in my car and using it to navigate is about 2-4 minutes (boot up time + locating satellites)
-- No easy way to remove a single recently found entry (can only clear all recent entries)
-- The English keyboard mode on touch screen does not have an option for QWERTY layout (it is alphabetical, from left to right, with 4 rows, which requires me to hunt around for the letters
- no north indication on map when Map view is set to Track Up
-- major state routes normally show as route # on map (no street name along with it - this sometimes applies to the direction. for example, for Braddock Rd (which is route 620), it is labeled as 620 on the map view, but I would like both)
-- shows estimated arrival time on map view (which is confusing at first, b/c I thought it was current time, which meant that it's time was wrong - would much prefer the current time or count estimated down time to destination, eg. 5 minutes to
-- website claims it is easy to load new vehicle icons and such, but Garmin's website doesn't have anything but a POI Loader software and a Web updater software to updated the unit itself.
-- Documentation is slim and online docs from Garmin doesn't provide much more info (Since the unit is very easy to use, it isn't a major issue)

5 of 5 Review from first time user 1/23/2008
from Knoxville, TN
I just received my GPS, opened it, plugged it in, and off I went. That easy.
The size of the screen and colors are great. There were a few small streets that it missed, but overall, the maps were more than adequate.
The unit is slim, light weight, and very easy to use. The price is very reasonable.
You really can't go wrong, and it has an SD card slot, to expand capabilites. I would recommend this for anyone- old or young, computer savvy, or just getting by.
Thanks for reading this

5 of 5 Great Going Garmin (and Buy.com too)! 1/23/2008
from Patterson, New York
Great out of the box experience--up and running in minutes. Satelite connection is working good so far, even in our hilly area. Nice clear display with plenty of options. The photo display is a nice feature too. Finally, the shipping experience with Buy.com was quite nice--the Nuvi 200W arrived inside two business days with the no-charge shipping option. Thanks for the nice shopping experience.

4.7 of 5 weak signal 1/17/2008
from NYC, NY
I live in the NY/NJ area and just got a 200w. The price was fantastic @ $219 and was one of the easiest things to use. Also, the audio help and nearby attractions were great features. However, there is one problem: signal strength. In some areas, it takes forever to acquire a satellite signal and there's basically nothing you can do before it does. Some might argue this is due to the large buildings on Manhattan but it truly depends on the signal strength at where you powered it on. On the bright side, when the signal is found, it can be found again in a very short period of time. If you're looking for a simple, easy to use, inexpensive GPS, get this.

5 of 5 Great unit 1/14/2008
from Tampa FL
This is a great unit for the money. The wide format makes it more user friendly, it will display and speak in several languages, it's very easy to configure and figure out... The one criticism would be that it took a long time to locate the satellites originally, and it will sometimes lose them when you don't think it should, but that might be positioning in the car... Have to experiment more...

4.3 of 5 Easy to use with lots of POI's 1/13/2008
Scott Klein from Euless, TX
I purchased this GPS for my wife who likes to get lost even in our hometown. We took it with us on a trip to the northwest (Seattle, Spokane, Portland) and it only took us to a wrong place once and that was in downtown Seattle, where it seemed to get a little confused as to our location. Otherwise, it was spot on for 10 days of travel. I think the most surprising part was how every destination we put into it including small hotels it found with ease. The POI list is quite extensive and made the trip so much more enjoyable. Definitely a great GPS if you don't want/need the extras like bluetooth and MP3 capabilities.

I bought this GPS for my wife as a Christmas present because she could get lost in a paper bag.We have used it a few times and are very happy with the many options that this piece of electronics has to offer. One of the reason that made me consider this equipment was the price that was made available at Buy.Com.

3.3 of 5 relatively cheap, but not perfect 1/3/2008
from Palo Alto, CA
on the plus side: it does a decent job plotting the route and i like the feature of reducing scale and detail levels when the route passes over a long stretch of the freeway and there is no need to display the names or the details of the small surface streets. the display zooms adding a lot more detail in when you get close to a turn. it's a clever feature.
on the minus side: takes too long to find satellites, even when in clear view of the sky. The standard mounting system (suction mount for the windshield) is illegal in California, and i had a terrible time making the included mounting base with a sticky underside mount anywhere in my car: no flat surfaces, no smooth plastic, because it's all curved wood and leather.
points of interest selection and display are not well done. there seems to be no way to make the map display both the route and the points of interest (like gas stations) along it in a format that is readable by my middle aged eyes. routing is peculiar and will often lead on miles-long long loop instead of simply suggesting a U-turn. in many cases it seems to choose surface streets over a freeway, and i have found no way to force my preference for freeways on it. there is also no mechanism to select alternative routes: fast vs. short, for example.
all in all, this Garmin works OK. we bought it because we always rent cars with Neverlost GPS from Hertz when we travel, which costs us quite a bit every year, and Neverlost is not a great system and Hertz is not the cheapest car rental. Garmin works better than Neverlost and i expect that its cost will be recouped in a couple of years of savings on car rentals. however, Garmin is over-all inferior to the navigation system we have in our Lexus.

5 of 5 Lost no more!!!! 1/1/2008
from Eureka, IL
Bought this item as a Christmas present for my wife. Great item for someone who has a fear of getting lost because of a detour in the road late at night in the city. Was alittle disappointed when using on the country roads. Seems like it does not always recognize all roads and takes you out and around the long way but does evenutally gets you to that point. Am satisfied with the slim design. It is easily put in a pocket or purse. Also, can't beat the price through Buy.com.

Great product. If you are looking for an entry level purchase into the GPS arena, this is the product for you. This is the first one we have owned, and I had it setup in about 5 minutes. The best feature is simply having the map on to see the next cross street coming up. The interface is extremely user friendly and I would recommend this product to anyone who gets lost.

5 of 5 The best GPS I ever have, Fred 12/18/07 12/26/2007
Fred Kang from South Riding, VA 20152
Wow! After using this on a long vacation I can't imagine not having it. Just get in the car, plug in where you want to go (takes about 30-60 seconds) and you're off! Even going to places we know, it shows us the the secret back roads and short cuts which is ideal when you're not a local and move around a lot. The kids love tracking where we are, when we'll arrive and which way to turn next--this was totally unexpected. My wife, who usually hates anything electronic, now uses it to go on errands and find new places--even a skeptic is sold on it! After reading all the reviews and talking with a friend who has a 660 I decided on the Nuvi 200 Widescreen. It has only what we need and not all the other stuff we don't like maps of Canada, bluetooth, traffic updates that don't work, and MP3, and the 200 doesn't have the annoying flip up antenna. It recieves a signal from the backseat and while getting passed around the car by the kids or even from under the seat when you thought you turned it off. A nice feature is that the location directory lists the address AND phone number of each business or location so you can call for a reservation or ask questions. And since the directory sorts by proximity to your location its better than a yellow pages! You can easily adjust the volume from loud to mute and adjust the amount of prompting before a turn. It recalculates course changes in less than half a block. I also recommend the Garmin friction mount which is rock steady on the dash and allows for quick removal while parking or transering it to another car--wish it was included. Overall very dependable unit with intelligent navigation and outstanding value.

4.3 of 5 great gps 12/26/2007
from Nutley, NJ
I bought this one to give as a gift. I was not sure if it announced the street names and it does not, still, they are clear at the top of the screen so it is easy for a single driver to navigate alone. The NAV does not talk to you a lot - which can be both good and bad - so while we have another that gives you advance notice which would allow you to get left or right if needed in traffic, this one does not do that unless you happen to look at the screen. We like how the screen zooms out for long highway rides and zooms in only for when you have to make turns. Downside is that you get very little in the box - no AC cord, no protective case, no PC link. Upside is a large screen, easy to use, non-glare and overall a very nice product for the price.

5 of 5 Truly awesome 12/23/2007

In addition to the other reviews the best part about this unit is it powers down when you turn the car off and up again when you start. No need to remove it from the cigarette lighter adapter. I use it on battery power around town (5 hr battery life) but plug it in for long trips. All gps units take a few seconds to sync with the satellite, once you're on the road you'll have no problems navigating and finding POI.

Garmin Nuvi 200W is an excellent Personal Travel Assistance. Very easy to use, even novice user can understand the features without any problems. Wide screen really helps to read the road maps easily while you are driving. Screen colors, brightness and contrast are really cool and do not stess your eyes event during the night times.
I have been using it for more than a week and it is worth to buy this product!!!
I was expecting following accessories with this unit but unfortunately Garmin doesn't supply those things with this product. You need to purchase them separately.
1. Household power cable.
2. Memory card(SD Card) loaded with maps of North America. Actually unit itself comes with maps loaded to it but I am wondering what will happen if there are changes/modifications to existing maps or there are new additions to those maps. I assume that I need to update preloaded maps in this unit with the purchase of new memory card (SD Card) with updated North America maps from Garmin. Not sure yet!!!
Overall very satisfied with this product, It works great :-) I will definitely recommend this product.
