IOGEAR 2-Port USB 2.0 Multi-Function Print/Storage Server

Finally a decently designed product that resolves the MFP printing on the network issue (DOT4). Just pop this little toy on your network, plug your Multi-Function Printer into the other side, and life is good again. The software IS required, but is very straightforward, and works well. It is easy enough for a user to use.

I really wish the specs had made it clear that USB hard drives were only fully supported if they were formatted as FAT32. It wasn't until I dug into the manual that it became clear that NTFS was Read Only, unless you used that silly Virtual USB driver under the few O/S's they support, and then, it's one computer at a time. If you're looking for a simple way to network an NTFS drive with large files on it, this isn't the solution for you.

I used this with an external hard drive only since my printer goes direct wireless. It might work good for the printers (I can't comment on that) but for my application, it was a total pain. If you switch users even on the same computer, you can't get to the device without going back and manually disconnecting under the previous user. There is a network mode for external hard drives that would be great but I never could get it working correctly so I was stuck with the virtual USB mode....thus manually disconnecting / connecting the server and device. Secondly, even if I was the same user that originally connected the server, half the time at least, I couldn't see my external hard drive through the server. So I would have to manually disconnect and re-connect anyways. After two weeks of messing with it, I decided it's too much grief and just got a travel size external hard drive to carry around. (I should have just done that in the first place since the travel hard drive was less than this server.) If you do get this server though, make sure it works correctly for your application before 14 days (from shipping date from Buy.com) is up...they'll only take returns within two weeks from ship date even if the device doesn't work like it's described.) So unfortunatly, I'm stuck with mine.

I like this product (GMFPSU22W6). About the size of a deck of cards, it attaches two USB devices to the network. I used LPR and Jetdirect (RAW) for shared printing to older HP DOT4 USB printers (PSC1350 and PSC2500). DOT4 works, and Vista loaded drivers automatically when I used virtual USB (once I downloaded the latest firmware and software). Once a printer is configured (by plugging it in to your PC or using virtual USB) you can switch to LPR or RAW and share the printers! If you use virtual USB, you hog the device, but you can also scan, etc. If you have non windows machines, you can configure this with a web browser and use the printers via LPR or RAW ports, and storage devices via FTP. For storage devices you can use Windows file sharing or FTP (for FAT or FAT32 devices), and virtual USB (under Windows) for anything else. Had to find something like this to make wireless laptops print on our older (DOT4) devices. The device is very reliable.

This is the Premo Print server on the market right now. I hooked up my 3TB NAS Hard Drive, 2 Printers, and 1 all in one scanner/printer. The Iogear handels them all, granted the 3TB Hard Drive takes a while to be located due to size. Only gripe I have is that inorder to use a device on a new work station the old one has to disconnect manually.
