| | | | Product Guides | | | | | For the person who needs access to their digital content away from home, at work, or online, while also allowing that same content to be shared in a secure setting, look no further than the Seagate Free Agent Pro Portable Hard Drive. This powerful portable hard drive delivers high-speed transfers, while also giving you the ability to share content with others safely and securely from a remote location or even online.
With up to 1 Terabyte and an ultra-slim design for a clutter-free desktop, your FreeAgent Pro external hard drive helps keep you safe from goof-ups by automatically saving new versions of your content that you can easily access if need be. And should something happen to your PC, you can roll back your Windows operating system, settings, and applications to a point in time when they ran smoother, like before a virus attack. Even though the system settings are taken back in time, updates to photos, music and critical data files are kept current.
The Free Agent Pro is also ideal for those who want quick and painless transfers of their data from their computer to their drive, and from their drive to online accounts (such as Shutterfly or email). Simply plug it in to any power source and connect the USB cable to any computer, and you're ready to go. This hip-looking hard drive takes up less room on your desk than an ordinary stapler--1 x 3 x 5.2 inches (H x D x W)-- giving you more space for your other desktop items. Meanwhile, the hard drive only measures 7.5 x 1.4 x 6.3-inches (H x D x W) and it matches its small base.
The Free Agent Pro data mover automatically duplicates and moves selected content from your hard drive to multiple locations, such as copying your contact lists and emails to your iPod, or photos to a Shutterfly account. This feature also allows you to move your entire 'My Documents' folder to the Free Agent, or move it to your own online space where you (or others you choose) can access it from any browser 24/7. The Free Agent software also offers the feature of rolling back your system to better time if something should happen to your PC while automatic revisions of your content help keep you safe from goof-ups.
Move files or other content with either USB 2.0 or eSATA allowing a maximum transfer rate of 480Mb/sec for USB, and 3Gb/sec for eSATA, while delivering a high performance spindle speed of 7,200 RPM. The unit also comes with a sophisticated touch point power on/off switch.
The Free Agent Pro software and drive formatting works only with Windows, but the drive can easily be reformatted for a Mac with OS X's Disk Utility. This portable hard drive is also compatible with Windows Vista (as well as Windows XP and Windows 2000), allowing you to backup your content regardless of operating system upgrades. A five-year warranty is also included, giving you complete peace of mind. Now with the ability to take your data with you anywhere you go, your digital content finally has room to breathe.

5 of 5 Easiest setup ever Friday, May 23, 2008 A Customer from Boone, NC
Just plug it in and it works. Very few technology items work as advertised. This one does. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Very good value! Tuesday, April 29, 2008 Deepak from Fort Lauderdale, FL
I went with the 750 instead of the 1TB because of the positive reviews. The only gripe I have is the annoying pop ups after you install the drive. I guess that is due to the fact that I need to back up my drive. Besides that it was so easy, my wife actually can use it :) It also matches my desk !!! Which makes my wife even more pleased... 5 of 5 A great drive but not for TIVO Series 3 expansion Tuesday, April 29, 2008 Dan W from Palatine, IL
I bought this drive to add storage to our Series 3 TIVO, but it was incompatible with the TIVO, so I've given it to our son for use with his computer and he loves it. I had bought it after reading many articles on how easy it is to hook up an external hard drive to the Series 3 TIVO, but after trying various approaches (as written up on various message boards) we found that there was no way to make the drive work with the TIVO. I'll stress that the drive is great and works like a charm when connected to a computer. It's just not compatible with the TIVO. And, a comment about my first experience with eSATA connectors - I'm not happy with the design of the connectors because they connect in a very loosey-goosey way, and the fit is not firm at all. I'll bet that a mild California earthquake could cause the connectors to disconnect. Again, this has nothing to do with the drive, it's just a poorly designed connector in my opinion. Our son is successfully using the included USB2 connection cable with his computer. Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Currently very happy Saturday, April 26, 2008 rwe9 from Beverly Hills, Ca
I purchased about 3 weeks ago. Installed effortlessly, and has been working perfectly since. Fast on USB 2.0. Have had good luck in the past with seagate drives. expect the same. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Deal - Nice Back-up software! Thursday, April 24, 2008 A Customer from Lakeport, CA

5 of 5 Packaging is important too! Kudos Tuesday, April 15, 2008 GreenThumb from Whidbey Island, WA
Seagate gets thumbs up for packaging with recyclable materials -- cardboard & box board -- YES! and NO styrofoam to throw away. GREAT! Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Seagate Runs hot but Good Drive Thursday, April 10, 2008 icu4eya from Towaco, NJ
This drive is veryu easy to use and operates at a good speed. My only concern is that the bottom of the base seems to heat up pretty quikcly and gets quite hot. I was wondering if anyone else has that concern ? Otherwise the drive runs great. I asked a guy at Staples and he tells me as long as the body is not hot it should be OK. I am hoping it's not a defective drive and others have observed the same. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great External Drive Wednesday, March 19, 2008 A Customer from Danbury, CT
This is just what I needed. A huge capacity drive to take the load off my internal drive.
The quality of the Freeagent is excellent. It's instantly recognized and goes right to work. I use GoodSync for my backups, and like it. But the software that comes with the Freeagent looks good too.
The unit is quiet, nice and heavy, and looks very good.
I'm very pleased all around with it.
Buy.com was great. I received a faulty unit and they immediately replaced it with a good one. With the great prices and service, this company just can't be beat. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Works as advertised Tuesday, March 18, 2008 Mark from Bradford, MA
I bought this HD to use as a backup disk for my kids' iMac, using Leopard's Time Machine backup software.
None of the software that came on the HD runs on a Mac - and I wasn't planning on using it anyway - so I just reformatted it.
I plugged it in and it worked just fine using the USB port. I was in business in 5 minutes. What more can you ask?
It doesn't really matter to me, but my kids think it looks cool with the glowing yellow stripe down the middle. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Ok Drive - Basic Software Sunday, March 16, 2008 A Customer from Maintown, VT
Good deal for the money. Drive works fine but backup software is very basic. Was this review helpful?
1 of 5 Intermittent Power Sunday, March 16, 2008 Daniel from Lincoln, NE
I bought this about 3 weeks ago and I should have tested it right away. I wasn't able to set this up until a couple of days ago. At first it worked like a charm. After only one hour of usage, the power comes and goes. At first I thought it was the power strip. After switching power sources multiple times, the power would turn off and on by itself. Because of Buy.com's 14-day return policy, I was not able to return or ask for an exchange. Now I'm left with dealing with Seagate. Hope everything works out.
A couple of things that I think Seagate could improve: (1) have an on/off switch; (2) the power and transfer cable hooks on the base. It is easy to wiggle the body on it's base and that might be the problem if my the power comes and goes. They should have the hookups on the body and not the base.
I would recommend everyone who buys from Buy.com to test their product right away. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 excellent drive Sunday, March 16, 2008 weltwind from Florida
I also own a 1 year-old 500GB FreeAgent. The new 750GB appears to be somewhat faster. In real world conditions, the 750GB appears very similar in transfer rates to HP's 750GB Personal Media Drive, with Windows Vista showing predominant write rates of 10 MB/s for both drives, as opposed to 5 MB/s for my 500GB FreeAgent. The 750GB is also styled better than the 500GB FreeAgent(with a metallic finish and an all-around LED light), although I would have preferred being able to turn the uninformative light off, and to have a simple dot LED instead. More importantly, both drives are equally silent. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Works just fine Sunday, March 16, 2008 A Customer from Menlo Park, CA
Replaces 2 smaller external drives on a Macbook setup. The Seagate seem to work just fine, and is nice and quiet. Some people have reported the drive running quite hot, especially the USB/eSATA module, but I have not noticed that at all. I would say the USB/eSATA module gets moderately warm, but nowhere near uncomfortable to touch. I have not tried eSATA, but the USB interface seems to work just fine. Looks like it is made of brushed aluminum, but really the entire case is plastic, but of pretty high quality. Can't comment on its longevity yet as I've only had it a few weeks. 5 of 5 Buy.com provides products at a great price quick.. Sunday, March 16, 2008 A Customer from Charlotte, NC
I received this product and it has worked well so far.
Unfortunately right about the time I purchased this a 500 GB Seagate Barracuda that I purchased from another vendor failed (click of death).
Seagates customer service is the worst in the tech industry, it took approximately one month for me to receive my replacement drive. The 5 year guarantee is great, but having Seagate honor it is a real challenge.
Now I am sorry that I purchased another Seagate drive. If it continues working great, if not I'm sure I will be in store for another nightmare to return it for service. Was this review helpful?
3 of 5 eSATA port not always compatible with SATA chipset Saturday, March 15, 2008 RME from Los Angeles, CA
USB 2.0 port works fine. eSATA port rebooted my Vista x64 home-built PC using the JMicron or Intel SATA chipset on my motherboard (ASUS P5H DW Deluxe). Had to buy a PCIe eSATA board with Silicon Image 3132 chipset before the drive worked reliably from the eSATA port. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 This HDD rocks! Monday, February 25, 2008 Gil from Pittsford, NY
I have purchased quite a few Seagate FreeAgent external HDD units over the past 2 years, and LOVE their performance and obvious value. What initially sold me was the price and 5 year warranty, despite the non-conventional look of the product. But once I put a few into operation I quickly got over the unusual look. My most recent FreeAgent purchase was the 750Gb unit, and I connected it to an eSATA II PCI-Express card on a Dell 840 Server (all others have been USB v-2.0 connected). Wow! This is one screaming unit! I have a second eSATA II port on that Dell Server just begging to be filled, and it will be with a 2nd FreeAgent 750Gb HDD. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 DirecTV HR20 expansion - Easy! Sunday, January 06, 2008 A Customer from Apple Valley, MN
This was the easiest HD expansion I've ever done - certainly easier than on the HR10-250, for which you had to open the case and swap drives. On this new DirecTV DVR, the only negative is that the 320G internal HD is not used when you plug in an eSATA drive. Also, there is supposed to be a 1TB Seagate FreeAgent Pro coming to market - wish I felt I could have waited for this, but no availability is known. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Works exceptioally well with DVR expansion Friday, December 14, 2007 A Customer from Connersville, IN
Our DISH satelite HD DVR holds aproximately 220G and was out of space. The DVR formated the drive and led me through the complete procedure in which the Seagate works flawlessly. I am pleased and have always been pleased with large Seagate drives. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 LOVE IT! Tuesday, November 13, 2007 A Customer from WI
Plug in & use, extra software tools if you need them & a great looking product as well. Couldn't be more pleased and plan to purchase another. Was this review helpful?
1 of 2 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Magnificent, Awsome! Friday, September 28, 2007 E. Davis from Minneapolis, Minnesota
I work at Seagate so take this review how you want.
My brother is currently serving in IRAQ (Aug '06 - Nov '07). He filled up his Maxtor 300GB drive and asked if I could locate a Maxtor 500GB drive for him. From online forums, I learned that Maxtor products were not getting decent support from Seagate. Don't ask me why, perception is reality. Therefore, I purchased the 750GB Freeagent Pro for him. I made the purchase because of the price and warranty. Since I don't have a 750GB Freeagent Pro myself, I've cut and pasted his comments:
Friday, September 28, 2007, 12:14am CDT
"...the HDD is magnificent, I didn't bring it up here with me, I brought the 300 GB Maxtor, easy to pack in my back pack, plus I didn't want to take any chances with the Seagate while I was traveling with the military transport up here, I will tell you that thing is awesome, it is definitely going to stay next to my desktop, plus it's pretty with the low orange glow when it's on, and everyone is jealous, because I have a 750, the
flagship!" --MSG W.A. Davis, USARMY Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Easy TiVo Upgrade Monday, June 18, 2007 Chris from So. Orange, NJ
The eSATA interface on this HDD made quadrupling the space on my Tivo S3 a snap. It is nearly silent and has so far performed flawlessly. Great value. Was this review helpful?
1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Super easy Super fast Super value Saturday, May 26, 2007 gruderlaw from Huntington NY
The set up of the drive was extremely easy. The embedded software is easy to use and set up. Transfer speed appears to be very very good. I couldn't be happier. I have a LeCie 1TB external drive which I love but current reviews weren't good so I went with the 750GB Seagate FreeAgent and I am glad I did. Was this review helpful?
