    Nikon D40 Digital Camera Review

The Nikon D40 is the "gateway drug" into the world of digital SLRs. The combination of nice price, high quality and ease of use is certain to lead to SLR addiction. With the D40, Nikon wants to make sure that you're not intimidated by the controls or size of an SLR and I think that they've done a good job. Also, by including plenty of "help" features into the camera, it becomes very easy to figure out which setting does what....read the full review

5 of 5 Excellent Entry Level Digital SLR Saturday, September 12, 2009
Ronald Victor from Clemmons, North Carolina

I have been using this camera for about 2 months. I am very much thrilled at the clarity of the picture even though it is only 6.1 MP. I am still learning about all the functions available. Overall an Excellent Digital SLR and easy to use.

5 of 5 Best Deal for the Money Tuesday, October 07, 2008
    cpvalle from Las Cruces, NM
You really can't go wrong with this camera. It has a great price and offers great features is durable has great battery life and best of all it takes really nice pictures. For me the item came broken but buy.com replaced the camera promptly. They even paid for shipping the item to them. The second camera came better protected. Not sure where the blame goes to Nikon for not providing better packaging or the shipping company for not handling item correctly.

    5 of 5 Great General-Purpose Camera Friday, December 14, 2007
    Dave Ballance from Portland, OR
This is a great camera if you want to step up from the point-and-shoot ones. The 6.1 MP will probably be fine for most peoples' usage. The first weekend after I got it I went walking around downtown taking pictures of everything and was very pleased with the results and with blowing up the pictures to larger than a standard 4x6 or 5x7. I did have to buy a new printer because my 6-year-old one just didn't have the DPI to print the pictures I took with this camera. But printers are relatively inexpensive now so I was happy to get a new one. The big surprise I had was that it didn't come with a memory card. So note that if you're buying this as a gift - make sure you get a memory card too.

    5 of 5 Love my Nikon D40 Wednesday, August 29, 2007
    marty.brown from Walnut Creek CA
I used 35mm Nikons in the 70s and 80s and moved to digital point and shoot cameras in the late 90s. After upgrading several times, I laid my hands on my father-in-law's Nikon D70 SLR and fell in love again with the SLR camera. Last Christmas, I treated myself to the new D40 SLR. I took it on it on a trip to Russia and Portugal and took about 500 shots. The control over the shot is so much greater than a point-and-shoot model that it can hardly be described. I'm able to control the exposure, optical zoom and overall picture, all without removing the camera from my eye and diving deep into non-intuitive menus. The Nikon D40 provides simple selections to automate about 75% of my shots and gives me the flexibility to creatively construct the occasional tricky shot that would simply come out overexposed or underexposed on my P-and-S camera. Nikon's lenses are simply the best and their accessories for this camera allow me to expand my photography skills as I grow. If you want more from your camera and yet don't want to become a photography expert, try the Nikon D40. It's a great camera.

5 of 5 Good starter DSLR Monday, April 09, 2007
    apestcoe from Center Valley, PA
Compairing this to other DSLRs, I find that the D40 is a very user friendly camera. I haven't compaired it to the 10 megapixel D40x, however picture clarity is amazing. The included 18-55mm lens is versatile and lightweight with excellent closeup capablility. As advised by several Nikon users, the 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 af-s dx vr Nikkor lens is worth the $750 investment, and will be my next purchase for the D40. For quick, quality photography, the automatic settings are A+, however if you need to change depth of field or exposure settings, the controls are easily accessible and simple to operate. Ordering through Buy.com via merchant Adorama had my purchase at my door within 72 hours(without request of special delivery)at a very competitive price. Overall, this was a very good buying experience.
