4 of 5 Good scanner for the money Wednesday, July 04, 2007 Bob from Beardstown, IL
The scanner does what I expected it to do. It's a little slower than I thought it'd be, but maybe I'm more impatient than I should be. I wanted to scan some old 8mm film strips and make 4x6 prints, but it's not as clear or sharp as I'd like it to be. For scanning pictures or 35mm slides to be saved on the computer or printed, it does great.

5 of 5 WORKS LIKE A CHARM Monday, July 02, 2007 A Customer from Green Bay, WI
Excellent high quality scan!
Most surprising is the fact I also wanted to use the scanner on multiple computers with various operating systems - including Windows 98SE. Every software install was flawless! ...And the device and software worked as soon as I plugged the device into a USB port.
By the way, the scanner also scans quite quickly compared to other scanners I've had or have used.

3 of 5 s.l.o.w Monday, July 02, 2007 Jim from Oak Ridge, TN
I didn't believe some other reviewers who said it was slow. Believe it. It is glacially slow. Like 10-15 minutes/page. It also definitely is limited by the total number of pixels in an image. If you select 600 dpi for a full page image, you get a scan of half of it.
That being said, it does an excellent job of scanning, and the color correction really works well. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Epson V100 Scanner Friday, June 22, 2007 A Customer from Illinois
Buy.com had the best price on this scanner and epson offered a $40 m-i-r. It's a great scanner. Easy to setup and use. I haven't used all of the features yet. But the ones that I've used, have worked as advertised. Was this review helpful?

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with this machine. It works well, has a great full auto mode that allows you to scan in a hurry, and it automatically detects the type of doc you're scanning. Good resolution and can even handle slides and negatives (very psyched to get those out of my closet eventually!).
My only complaint so far is a long software install and as far as I can tell (just got it)- no on/off switch. Other than that, great machine! Was this review helpful?

I just wanted a decent scanner. With $30 for a buy.com credit card and a $40 rebate, I'll get this for like $20. The software didn't install, but that could be my computer. I finally got it to work but I don't know how or why. I would think a minority of computer users could have handled it. Actually part of it was definitely me being dumb, but also their software wouldn't install. The start button on the machine doesn't make it work I don't think, but I don't care I'll click the icon on the screen and it works. As far as scanning goes it seems really good, but I wouldn't know. This scanner would probably at LEAST hold its own with anything similarly priced. People complain about noisy scanners and slow scanners, but I don't care about that unless it is ridiculous, and this scanner is fine by me. It doesn't have an on/off switch, you have to plug in the power cord to turn it on, and leave in on forever or whatever you want, it turns on and off when the computer comes on. I like it plenty good. Unless it breaks on me or something. Was this review helpful?

It seems pretty good so far. My only gripe about it is there seems to be no On/Off button. I need to unplug the darn thing when I don't need to use it. I like to know whether or not the scanner is off or on. I'm not sure if you're suppose to wait and it turns off by itself (it doesn't seem that way cause the light is still on, not the scanner bulb though). The plug also is awkward. It's a 2x3.5inch block so you need to plug it at the end of your surge protector to not take up so much space.
I think that's it so far. Over all good scanner for price. Was this review helpful?

I don't have a lot of experience with scanners, but in my opinion the Epson V100 is a good piece of hardware. I bought this scanner to replace an Epson Perfection 1650 that I used for about 6 years. The 1650 is still working fine (I gave it to my Mom) so I'm not too worried about Epson durability.

It's true that Epson made a few questionable decisions when designing this model, but the odd location of the cables and scan bed orientation don't really bother me. I actually like that the lid hinges along the length of the scanner bed rather than along the width like the 1650 does. The V100 doesn't seem so top heavy when the scanner lid is opened.

Installation was simple and all the software worked pretty much as expected. I don't do any film scanning so I can't comment on its capabilities with that media, but all of the paper scans I do come out great, and I love the ability to scan multiple documents into one PDF file. My only complaint might be that learning how to do the PDF scans took some research and patience... the documentation was not very clear.

All in all I'm very happy with the V100. And for $45 after rebate it seems like a great deal to me (especially considering that I paid $200 for the 1650 nearly 6 years ago).
5 of 5 Nice scanner Thursday, June 07, 2007 A Customer from Massachusetts
cool scanner, the only thing that lacked was a TURN ON/FF button, but it be solve by unplugging and plugging back in the USB cable to your computer as a TURN ON/OFF function, other than that, the picture restoration was excellent. Easy to use , if you're a newbie, I would recommend this one, if you're not a newbie, well, I don't know. I use it for my art projects. So like I said, there's no complaints here. Good luck. 4 of 5 So So scanner... Tuesday, May 29, 2007 A Customer from Boston, MA
The "Epson V100 Photo scanner" is an ok to buy for those newbies out there. So in other words, don't be expecting too much. In terms of 'value', and 'ease of use' I rated it a 5 point scale because that's what it really deserves. It's really easy to use and simple to install with their step by step instructions, "so easy a caveman can do it"... I guess you know what this means. 'Performance' and 'Overall satisfaction' was rated a 4 point scale; why? Well, in terms of performance, I didn't like how some times when I was trying to scan a full page drawing, it scanned me only half of the page by default, so in order to fix this I had to go through the scan options in order to scan it the way I wanted too. Another problem with this scanner was the missed option for a TURN ON/OFF button, then again, I had to find my own way to get around it to turn it ON and OFF whenever I need it. Here's how its done: Once you have installed the software as instructed on the user's manual and rebooted your computer for better installation, all you have to do is plug the USB cable to your computer and then plug the power connector to a power oulet, your computer reads it and the scanner is ON. To turn it off is the other way around: Unplug the power connector, then unplug the USB cable from your computer and the scanner is OFF. Repeat these two when turning ON/OFF if need too. Other than these two problems which aren't really a big deal, everything works fine with the scanner. Picture quality restoration is beautiful. Speed and quality are also nice. So if I had to recommend it I would say yes. Good luck. Was this review helpful?

1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 3 of 5 Makes a good scan--but you better pack a lunch Friday, May 25, 2007 Hugh Nile from Calcutta, OH
1. This gives a nice output.
2. It scans VERY slowly. It takes about 2 1/2 minutes just to scan a page in B&W! If you are going to do much scanning you better pack your lunch or you could starve to death before you are done.
3. Very flimsy construction. If you use it as a flatbed and place a book or magazine on the scanner you may hear a bunch of clicking noise. The output scan then will have jumps in it. The problem appears to be that if you are not very careful holding the book down you actually deflect the window in the scanner. The traveling light under the window has zero clearance and it jams--which makes the driving mechanism slip.
4. The hinge on the flatbed lid sticks and makes a cracking noise--expect it to break.
5. The software works but is difficult.
6. I can see why they need to give a rebate to get people to buy this marginal scanner.
I guess this is about what you expect from a $50 scanner. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Good Price Good Scanner Monday, May 14, 2007 A Customer from Wesley, AR
Nice buy. I had two older Epson Perfection 2400 scanners that had seen good service and I wanted to stick with what I knew worked great for me. Good price and prompt service. Was this review helpful?

The scanner installed on my Windows XP computer without a hitch. Scanned and reproduced color photos excellently. The scan to PDF feature worked great, and is a real plus. Great value for the money. Was this review helpful?
4 of 5 Great product for its price Wednesday, April 04, 2007 Ajit Joshi from Cincinnati, OH
This Epson scanner is a very nice product with ultimate ease of use. Though the scanner and accompanying software has whole lot of features available for professional scanning, the basic scanning functionality is very easy and quick to use. The price is also quite competitive. Negative films scanning is a delighter.
I would like to thank Buy.com for their very fast shipping service. Even under Free budget shipping, they shipped the scanner to me on the same day as I ordered and I received it within 2 days.
Only drawback I could see with this scanner is its scanning speed is quite slow and even during consecutive scannings, it shows message - 'Scanner warming up' and makes you wait for 5-7 secs.
Overall a great product. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Buy! Tuesday, April 03, 2007 cowgirlpal from Oklahoma City, OK
Right out of the box this scanner was easy to install and ready to use in just minutes. The "Quick Start" directions are perfect - every step is explained with great graphics and written directions.
For my purposes - scanning old family photos and documents to share with extended family members - it is perfect! The scans are quick and resulting photos go right to My Pictures without so much as a click from me.
I agree with the previous reviewer regarding the 1/8th inch cutoff. I solved that problem by setting the item further away from the edge and placing a piece of white paper on top of it - basically creating a border or matt which I later cropped out using Microsoft Photo.
For the price, you can't go wrong with this scanner - great for the beginner, casual user or anyone wanting to try a scanner with a big investment. Was this review helpful?
8 of 9 customers found this review helpful. 3 of 5 Good quality scanner but ... Monday, April 02, 2007 Steve from Mill Valley, CA
This is a good scanner with easy to use software (including OCR) and simple installation. I upgraded from an 8 year old Epson scanner. I recommend a custom install to deselect any software you don't want such as an older version of Acrobat. Unlike printers, they included a USB cable here. My only complaints:
1. No on-off switch: Epson saved a few pennies, but unless you unplug it, it is another always-on device in your house: 3.5 watts 24x7, equal to 30.7 KWH or $10/year.
You also have to listen to it fire up whenever you boot or come out of stand-by mode. Same problem with the V350 model, too.
2. No edge-to-edge scanning, meaning if you use the edge as a guide to align a photo, the scan will cut off 1/8".
3. Tech Support has moved to India. As recently as 12/06, I could get someone in the U.S.
I would have given it an overall "5" otherwise. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great scanner, lots of options Monday, March 26, 2007 Justin from Columbus OH
I enjoy the scanner it works well for my needs (Pictures, Negative Film). Took me a little while to figure out, because for the negatives you have to remove the matte white background (I didnt know that was removeable for a while). But now everything works fine and considering there was a 40 dollar rebate you really cant beat it. Thanks Was this review helpful?
