This printer is very good at a great price. Easy to setup I using it with my MacBook Pro.

I usually buy my paper by the case, so it's not like I "infrequently" use the things. My old faithful (& slow) ##4P from 1994 finally gave up the ghost, so I was thinking of getting a new laser after dumping lots of money through my inkjet. Those ink carts go fast in a photo printer. In August 2007 a great deal for this little Brother from Buy.com comes through (Really great rebate & free shipping too!). Buy.com has great prices on the toner carts so I got one of them as well. My favorite feature is the sleep mode on this printer. The one from '94 didn't have that, so this is very cool to me. Even the power switch light goes out to save energy, so it takes only 5 or 6 watts just sitting there. About what a night light takes. And...best of all, it starts up fast & prints fast.

This workhorse can warm up from a cold start and print 20 crisp pages in less than 80 seconds. The per page cost is a small fraction of inkjet printers and the buy.com delivered price was less than than the "sale" price at our local office supply. It doesn't have a LAN card but what do you expect for peanuts? If you're looking for an economical laser printer that will exceed expectations this is it.

This is easy to setup and get going. I can confirm the weaknesses outlined by other reviewers such as corner paper curl and the excessive power draw when restarting after going to standby. However, you know this before you buy so no surprises. This is a good deal when compared with the new model (2140) as about the only significant change is that the newer model does not have the parallel port interface. As an aside FedEx ground service is poor. My package sat in the local terminal for 5 days before it was delivered. Seek alternative delivery means.

Easy set up, warm up speed is quick and the paper feed doesn't jam like other laser printers at this price. Print quality is above par. And it automatically turns off the USB isn't plugged into the laptop or computer to save power. Excellent purchase. It is network compatible with another component purchase but I use it only for the laptop. Wireless network would be a plus but still worth the price paid for.

Printer worked right out of the box. Easy setup and no hassles to get up and running. Got tired of ink drying up and the cost of replacement ink cartridges. Print quality is excellent. Highly recommend this one!!

This printer print so fast, I was amazed. I love it. Very happy with it. I have also bought the brother HL-2070 and it also work good. I Owned a Brother HL-1440 for two year now and very happy also. Can't go wrong with Brother printer.

Fast enough for home use, came with starter toner cartridge, don't think I need to buy toner within 2 years. I would suggest ONLY a laser printer for home use. Inkjets are TOO EXPENSIVE for home use, the cartridge gets dried up if usage is infrequent, and we never get Laser Quality.

After years of paying through the teeth for inkjet cartridges, I put this outstanding monochrome printer next to my old color inkjet and have the best of both worlds. I also note that 90% of my printing is really black and white anyway. The printer came out of the box.....I installed the software on my Mac......and started printing. Highly recommended. BTW - replacement drum is about $80 - a new printer cost only $55 on Buy.com - I bought two and put one in a closet with the extra drum and toner....

Printer installation and setup was a breeze, print quality is very good, I don’t find it noisy as some of the reviews stated. Ordered it on Thursday morning and it was at my door Friday afternoon! Overall – still can’t believe a $50 laser printer has the quality of this one! BUY IT!

This is a great printer. It comes with vista drivers but my laptop found the printer and had it ready to use immediately without the drivers. Fast and easy!

This is just a value for money product. I like products from Brother, they are reliable. I have been using from school days and brother's performamce is great in high volume printing activity too. There is no worry for getting the toner and lasts long. Thanks Sobhan www.collabotrade.com

Overall, this is a fantastic value. This is a good, solid laser printer that works reliably. However, if you do a lot of envelope or label printing, this is not a good choice. I find it nearly impossible to get a page of labels or an envelope into the manual feed slot in proper alignment. It always prints manual fed pages crooked. It's just a poorly designed feed system. Other than that, for printing to plain paper from the tray, it works very well. It does draw enough power to dim the lights in the room every time it powers up, but this may be a common issue with laser printers.

I bought this printer for my kids to print homework after having so much trouble with a networked HP all in one printer. It was easy to install and has worked well for a month. It works first time, everytime. I was so satisfied I purchased a Brother all in one for the network which also is trouble free.

The Brother HL 2040 is a good basic mono laser printer for the money. One problem I have, however, is with the Manual Feed slot. I use this printer to print checks and when I use the Manual Feed, the check is printed askew. The payee, amounts, and all other data are not printed in the correct places. When I put the checks in the regular paper tray, the check is printed fine. Otherwise, the printer is satisfactory.

Excellent Printer for the price, prints very fast after it comes out of sleep mode. I very happy with this printer, easy to setup. The manual port has no paper rest but when you do need to use it for envelopes or labels, it works fine. Toner costs are inexpensive too. Love it

What can I say. At around $75 I bought 5 for the business and replace the inkjet printers. Less hassle and less expense. Setup was easy as can be and it prints fast. A little on the noisy side but not bad. It is almost cheaper to buy a new printer than the drum kit when it is time for a new drum. Great value with no issues.

I needed a new printer in my home office(my inkjet died) and I was really tired of buying ink all the time. It was suggested I look into a laser printer but I thought it would be too expensive. Buy.com came to the rescue with a great deal. I didn't need color (I have an expensive color printer when I need a nice color copy) so this was the perfect choice....giving me quick, low-cost b&w copies. The printer set up in minutes with easy to understand directions (make sure you have a USB cable) and has been cruising along with no problems. The printer shipped the same day I ordered it (wow) so I had it in no time at all. Even the $20 rebate check showed up quicker than any rebate I've sent in (thanks Brother). I highly recommend it!!

I have four Brother printers and two Brother MFC printers. I have never had a problem with a Brother printer. The prices have always been great. You cannot go wrong.

This printer has been a pleasant surprise! Very fast output and incredibly clear, clean printing. Nicer output (and faster) than the big expensive HP network printers I have at work! I was so impressed that I bought a second one to give as a gift.

Wow... $55 for this printer is a steal. I got this guy around 1 1/2 years ago for $80. It works great. Toner is real cheap ($20 refills). Never had a paper jam or any problem. It would be stupid not to get this printer at this price..

I had been looking for a good, cheap laser printer. This is the one, with the rebate (which was fast and easy) this price can't be beat!! Supplies aren't outrages toner cost the same as an ink jet cartridge. This model doesn't have a network card, but added via USB and shared, works great on my home network.

This Laser printer is a great buy. I have had this printer for over 6 months and the only problem is that factory forgot to include the tonner. They were willing to send me one when this oversight was corrected quickly.

Printer was a snap to install on my Mac. Works flawlessly. Was so cheap I actually sprang for the Extended Warranty! Buy.com's service - including speed of "standard" shipping - was as exceptional as ever. You just CAN'T GO WRONG with this one - in fact, I'd say it was the best, smartest computer peripheral purchase I've EVER made!

I bought the first of five for our office over two years ago for a relatively high volume use location. It performed so well and cost so little that I'm replacing all our ink-jet printers. We are very hard on our machines, but the HL-2040 stands up to our abuse and just keeps on spitting out quality copy.

I really could not say enough good things about this printer! It is small enough to sit on my desk at work, and actually uses LESS space than did my prior ink jet printer. It is also quick. I don't ever seem to wait for my prints. For anyone who needs a small, quick, inexpensive laser this is a must!

This printer is a great value for the price. The only short coming is that the manual paper feed slot does not hold the paper steady. Otherwise, the printer works great!

I have bought three of these printers in the last few months. Two for the office as individual printers that are not hooked to the network so individuals can print sensitive materials without having someone see them on the network print. I also bought one for home use. It is hard to beat the price and the toner cartridges are resonably priced. The setup was a breeze and the footprint is nice and small for a laser. I think I will enjoy this printer.

This price is not much more than the cartridge for my inkjet printer. It's a compact unit and the paper tray adds a professional touch to it, rather than just having the paper sit outside the printer. It's a little bit louder than my dad's comparable HP laserjet but it's still pretty quiet. Sooo much nicer than an inkjet if you don't use color like me!

With lower costs of the printer and the expendables, such as toner, this Brother printer can't be beat. A rebate makes it even more of a deal. For personal use, no other monochrome laser printer can touch the 2040.

I've owned about a half-dozen of these printers, all with very good, reliable results. I feel the drum life is a little too short, but given the relatively low price of toner cartridges compared to the other laser printers I've owned, I'd definitely recommend this printer. If you do have to replace the drum, the cost for doing so is higher than Buy.com's price for a new one, so any time the drum wears out on our Brother 2040, we toss it and get another one. Though I hate the fact that this adds to the nation's landfill problems, from a selfish point of view, this is truly a great disposable printer!

I purchased this printer to replace a trusted old Epson ActionLaser 1500. The Brother is so much faster and prints a lot better than my old Epson. I have the printer connected to a HP 3 port JetDirect. The setup is very straight forward. However, it did not come with either the parallel or USB cable. The built-in sleeping function means I won't have to walk over and turn on the power before printing. Warm up time is also remarkably short. The printer can do some fancy things like print 16 pages in 1 or 1 into 16 pages (for wall poster). The more useful feature is the manual duplex. It works pretty well.

We had an older Brother laser printer and it needed a new drum and toner. This deal was perfect because we got a new printer for about the price, plus it's half the size and the dpi is much better. I'm sold.

Bought this printer to replace the old HP-IIP. Easy installation. Works well. Much faster than the HP-IIP. Print quality is quite acceptable for SOHO use. Status report gives you the stats and the remaining drum life. Drawbacks: 1) no mechanical support for manually fed media (hold it with your hand while feeding);2) the printer is noisy. Overall - it's worth the price.

This printer is exactly what it seems to be, a no frills, low end, easy to use, entry level laser printer. It doesn't have fancy features or exceptional print quality, but it does have a solid build feel and is a great buy for the cost. It prints faster than most of the same laser printers in its price range, and at equal or greater print quality. A laser printer at inkjet cost is almost always worth it. If you are looking for an inexpensive, but reliable, laser printer, this is it. Buy it, it's worth it.

First of all, the Brother 2040 is what it is. It's a monochrome laser printer. You aren't going to do any great color graphics, so don't expect to. But what you get is a dependable, affordable printer that doesn't cost an arm and a leg when it's time to replace the toner. If what you need it s black and white printer, this is the one.
