Hawking Technology's HWU54D, 2.4Ghz Hi-Gain Directional Wireless-G USB 2.0 Network Adapter, combines the range performance benefits of a Hi-Gain Antenna, the versatility of a USB Wireless Network Adapter and the speed of 802.11g wireless networking! A large problem with many wireless networks is the poor coverage area of standard Wireless networks. Hawking solves this problem with a Hi-Gain Wireless-G USB 2.0 Adapter that uses an external Hi-Gain antenna to amplify a strong wireless signal to your wireless access point. By increasing the strength of your external wireless antenna, your Wireless Network distance, signal strength and performance is significantly improved. Simply attach the Hi-Gain Wireless Adapter's USB 2.0 Cable to either your PC or Laptop and direct the antenna towards your wireless access point/wireless router. The HWU54D is self powered and requires no external power adapter, so you can take it wherever you go and always stay connected!

4 of 5 Excellent range, but drivers could use a makeover Tuesday, October 10, 2006
    Jamez from Grand Rapids, MI

Very easy to install and setup. Pulls in signals from half a mile away! I wasn't impressed with the drivers though. I had just tried a Netgear wireless USB dongle and the drivers show you all the access points, signal strength, encryption, channel and speed in the same list that you can sort. Hawking has a primitive interface that just shows the access point and strength and you have to click on each entry to see its settings. Also noticed if my processor pegs at 100% for a few seconds, it will drop the connection. But it does work well for pulling in weak signals and will keep it.

4 of 5 Works great but could be MUCH better Wednesday, June 07, 2006
    Rich from Albany, NY
It does what is supposed to be the software that comes with it SUCKS. I have tried to use windows to manage wireless connections but this software keeps starting up and taking over. Other than the software, this product is GREAT. Waiting for an upgrade.

    5 of 5 The GREATEST!!! Sunday, January 08, 2006
    A Customer from Chicago, IL
I had another name brand 11g network adapter and could not find the network regardless of where I moved my PC. I bought this and have a 99% strength connection! Now I never have a problem connecting. If you have a problem connecting, get this. It works GREAT! Thanks to all other reviewers for giving your feedback so that I knew to buy this item to correct my problem. Thanks to buy.com for having it in-stock at the best price available.

5 of 5 Extremely fast wireless internet access, great val Friday, September 30, 2005
    Abel from Olney, MD
I've had this product for over a week now and am very satisfied. It was very easy to set up and wireless internet access is very fast. It is a bit bulky but fits perfectly on top of my cpu. Great value, especially with $10 mail in rebate. I highly recommend it.

    5 of 5 Superb range Thursday, September 29, 2005
    Joe from Galveston, TX
I run a wireless network in a boat marina. There are users up to 400 yards away receiving 60% signal strength at constant 54MBS connections using this adapter! With Linksys USB adapters they were lucky to even "see" the network. Great signal reception and rock-solid connections; the only adapter I would recommend for anyone needing to connect over distances and/or obstacles.

    5 of 5 Excellent product Saturday, September 24, 2005
    JV from Castro Valley, CA
Much better than expected. Will travel through outside walls with artificial exterior planks. Does not pick up very well through my double pane coated windows. Best performance is through an open window (with non metal screen) pointed in the direction of the source. The number of detected signals increased by about 4 times over the stock card that came in the notebook. Speeds range from 5.5 up to 54, with 11 to 24 very common at my location. Previous stock card was giving up to 24, but 11 and 5.5 were more common and then it would drop to 1or lose the signal. This unit locks on and stays in the high numbers. Unit could use a longer stock usb cord. Logs onto almost any signal source. Software was no problem for a newbie to install and is easy to use. Would like an external antenna option.

5 of 5 Great Tx ouput and signal to noise ratio Saturday, August 20, 2005
    A Customer from milwaukee, wi
My original plan was to buy a network adapter and external antenna--this adapter was a better choice. First of all, the few adapters that have external antenna jacks are about the same price as the Hawking adapter. If you want the antenna fixed while moving your laptop around the room you will need a long stretch of coax. This can get expensive and at 2.4Ghz loss is noticable. With a USB device, you can have 20 feet of cable without a noticable loss in performance (since the radio stays fixed at the antenna). I did not notice a great increase in signal strength compared to the internal wirelss card on my 600m but here is the advantage: With a directional antenna there is a much lower signal to noise ratio. Even if the overall signal strength does not increase considerably, weak signals that a typical wireless card will not "hear" over noise will become usable signals with a directional antenna. The Hawking can produce 80% link quality with a signal that registers only 2 bars on the windows S-meter (An unusable signal to most cards). One last thing to think about: It is helpful to have a powerful output signal as well, since the access point will have an omnidirectional antenna typically (and hence a high noise floor). The is the only high ouput G adapter that I have found. It is rated at the same level as the 802.11b Engenius card (~23dBm or 200mW non-mercury chip). This makes it a suitable candidate for modifying to fit an evern higher gain antenna.

    Rich from Albany, NY
The range is amazing !!! I use this to share my neighbor's network from across the street.. at least 300 feet away. Connects every time with no problem. I wish the software was a little better but an awesome product and an unbelievable price.

5 of 5 Best Wireless-G USB 2.0 adaptor on the market. Tuesday, June 07, 2005
    Rich from Lexington Park, MD
My wireless network spans two buildings. My House and my office in a separate building about 50 - 60 feet away. The wireless access point is in my house and I have never been able to get more than a Low signal and a max 11 Mbps connection from my office until now. I plugged the HWU54D into a USB 2.0 port, set it on a window sill, aimed it generally at the house and bingo, excellent signal with a corresponding rock solid 54 Mbps connection. I couldn't be more pleased. I'm ordering a second one for my Laptop.

5 of 5 Perfect Wireless adaptor Monday, June 06, 2005
A Customer from Spanish Fork, UT
If you are looking for great connectivity on your wireless network, this is the one to buy. I have had my Hawking wireless USB adaptor for 1 year with no problems. My neighbor has a wireless router and we are able to play games between homes. His router and my USB adaptor are approx 200 feet away and it's not a line of sight connection, it's going though about 5 walls! I couldn't ask for a better solution to wireless coverage.

This is an amazing product...better than any wireless card. Boosts signal by 300%! Before I got this: signal was 12% from my bedroom and now it's 48%! Great for those who live in apartment complexes! Picks up any signal in building...almost magic!

Just got it. Easy to install, comes with everything you need. I only wish the supplied USB cable was a little longer. Very good range. Perhaps a best buy for the price.

    5 of 5 Hawking Tech USB 2 6db Wireless-G Adapter Monday, March 21, 2005
A Customer from Corpus Christi, TX
I did not buy mine here but I did buy one to replace my Linksys WMP54G due to the antenna attatchment broke off. I could not be more pleased with this purchase with the linksys I was constantly losing or having very low signals and transfer rates. With the Hawking I have at lowest 98% signal and always 54G connection with high connection strength. It is very versatile comes with a bracket to mount on the wall or just set it on your desktop and aim it in the general direction of the access point. Mine goes through 3 walls and about 45-50 feet to the access point and with a 98 to 100% signal strength all the time. I love it. It conneted to my linksys 54GS router with 256bit WPA encryption just fine it also has 128 & 64 bit WEP too. Along with 128 bit WPA. GREAT PRODUCT! I know you'll love it too.
