5 of 5 Very Nice Drive Monday, October 26, 2009
Elmer from Lewisville, NC

I purchased this drive specifically to be able to backup my notebook with Norton Ghost. I am running Norton Ghost 14.0 on a Dell XPSM1530. Under Vista Home Premium. I wanted a backup that was reliable since Vista is NOT!!! But that's enough Vista Bashing. The drive is very quiet. It has no fan. It is HEAVY for a 1TB HD. I suspect the weight is the metal in the chassis that must be the heat sink. I had it running via USB in minutes. It comes with a Firewire cable too but it is the 6 pin variety and this notebook has the smaller Firewire cable. I did a quick reformat for NTFS and that went well. Backups to the drive were very swift I thought. It took roughly 45 minutes to backup 60GB which is far better than backing up to my NAS even over a 1GB ethernet connection. It is advertised as a 1 TB drive. Depending upon your definition of a TB you are either satisfied or not. Being an oldtimer I am not quite happy as a Terrabyte to me is 1024 GB which is 1024 MB but it is more like 1000GB by 1000MB. I'm not going to cry about it though as this 1000GB drive is 50,000 times larger than my first HD way back on DOS 3.0 and cost 1/4th what I paid for that 20MB HD. In a couple years I expect that SDD drives will take over and eliminate platter HD's for most everything. If you want a nice drive, then get it.

5 of 5 Fantom 1TB USB/FW/eSATA External HD Tuesday, March 31, 2009
Bob Q. from Macomb, IL
I got a fabulous deal on this drive - too good to pass up - an am using it as my Time Machine drive in Mac OS 10.5. I upgraded the internal HD in my MacBook Pro to 320 GB in December. After that, my old Time Machine quickly became almost filled up and I needed more space. Thus far (~3 weeks) this drive has been excellent for the task it was purchased for. I keep it connected to my laptop when I am at my desk. It is quiet, cool, and small. I have gone into TM and recovered files with no problem. Thus far, I am using the FW interface, but it is nice to have the other two. Based on my experiences thus far, I would recommend this HD.
