| | | | Sangean's HDR-1 tabletop radio features a built-in HD Radio tuner so you can start enjoying the new, free digital programming many AM and FM stations now broadcast. When you tune in digital HD Radio signals, you'll hear a marked improvement in sound quality — FM can approach CD-quality sound, while AM nears current FM quality. Plus, the HDR-1 does a great job pulling in standard analog broadcasts, too.
The HDR-1 lets you access the additional digital-only channels some stations are broadcasting — channels which can only be received with an HD Radio tuner. And stations can send text information with their digital signals, such as station IDs, artist names, and song titles. The HDR-1 displays this text on its large, easy-to-read LCD screen.
Whether listening to digital HD Radio signals or regular AM and FM broadcasts, you'll enjoy great stereo sound from the HDR-1. Two 2-1/2" speakers set in the acoustically tuned cabinet deliver rich, detailed highs and mids, with nice, round bass.
The built-in digital clock displays both time and date, and includes dual alarms with snooze, as well as a sleep timer. Adjust the sound with the bass and treble control, or just use one of the EQ presets. And you can operate the radio from across the room with its provided remote.

This radio has a nice wood cabinet. It has very good AM and FM sensitifity. This si the most important thing, HD radio signals are only 10% the power of the standard signal.
This radio does require you to use the remote. It is loaded with fetures, you have to read how to use them. For example, in a bedroom, you may want the display to not light up. You ahve to figure the maze of menus to get there.
Cool feature: It displays the HD signal strength (in dB) and identifies HD signals even if they are too weak to come in HD. This helps with antenna positioning. All HD radios require the big FM "T" antenna to get decent reception. This radio is not as user friendky as, say, the iLuv, but it is very good and loaded with cool geek features. i am very pleased with the radio. It lacks a CD slot and iPod dock, but has Aux jack to accomodate an external CD player. The sound quality is excellent and the HD reception is fine. I am in a Boston Metro area however, so don't know how it would perform in rural reception. I have three of these radios in different locations.. Also have a Sangean tuner. All quite satisfactory. You have to follow instructions carefully to activate station presets but it happens if you are patient. Was this review helpful?

The AM and FM sensitivities are very poor compared to other radios that I have. The clock is useless - it loses between 15-20 seconds a day. It does not have power loss protection. If you momentarily lose power, the clock (including day/date/year) completely resets to the default setting. Therefore, the Alarm functions are useless.
I've had my unit for a week. I just sent the unit to the service facility for the clock inaccuracies. The cost - $8.00 for Sangean handling and $45.16 for UPS.

I'll eat the postage, and send it back. HD radio is a great concept, but when HD is decoded, it shouldn't be put through $10 speakers. Ibiquity is shooting themselves in the foot by charging manufacturers too much to license production of the HD Radio. There are a few good boxes out there for HD, like the BA Receptor, and the JVC car receiver, but this Sangean doesn't measure up. Poor sound quality, period. Was this review helpful?
