I always buy Western Digital drives if at all possible and I need this one to replace an old 80gb drive. Because this is the old EIDE interface, it is often purchased to go in older machines with older BIOS chips and older software. I was unable to even format it until I downloaded the WD software. Then, because I had the original XP disk, it was unable to partition anything larger than 137mb. After Windows XP is updated to SP2 or SP3, it will recognize more than 137mb. I did the entire installation and then found a free partitioning program that expanded the partition to the entire 500mb. There may be an easier way but I couldn't find one. After everything was finally set up it works perfectly. Was this review helpful?

This is a solid hard drive for a good price. Be sure you go to Western Digital's web site and download the installation instructions and manual, however, before you begin. The instructions are quite helpful and easy to follow. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Great Drive for the Money. Wednesday, October 22, 2008 Mark Pennington from Bloomington, Il
This drive is best suited for someone with experience installing computer hardware. There are no cables or software with drive, which is fine since the cost is great, and if you have the knowledge of installing it, then you will love it. Was this review helpful?

As other reveiwers noted, this drive did not come with any isntructions. After installation, Windows attempted to set it up but didn't succeed. I thought I had a bad drive. I actually wrote a negative review which I now came back to edit, but it doesn't seem to have been posted for some reason. Anyway, I read one of the reviews talking about downloading a setup tool from Western Digital's site. I did a search and found it. It located the hard drive, set it up, and all is well. They should really include that setup tool, or at least instructions how to find and download it. Thanks to the other reviewer who found the tool and saved me from sending a perfectly good drive back. Was this review helpful?

Easy to install. BUT !!!! Jumper settings are shown on the label on the hard drive to install as a slave. Windows shows it found new hardware, but won't install it. I tried various jumper settings found on the Western Digital site, and none of them make the drive work. As a matter of fact, a few of their settings caused the PC not to boot at all. The only conclusion is that it's a dud and will be returned to Buy.com. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Works as expected Sunday, March 23, 2008 A dude from New York
I bought two of these drives to run as a software RAID/mirrored pair. So far so good. Quiet and speedy. The drives arrive in anti-static wrap and no additional instructions, so if you haven't installed hard disks before you might want to get a retail package or look up directions online.

This drive works fine but was difficult to install. It should have come with an installation disk and did not. Because I was installing it along with other drives, I had considerable trouble setting the jumper pins on the various drives so that Windows could recognize the new drive. Finally I managed to download the necessary tool from Western Digital, and discovered that the pins on my DVD drive needed to be changed to "slave." Once I did that, Windows recognized the drive. 5 of 5 Great Price and Lots of Storage Wednesday, November 28, 2007 James from Palatine, IL
After purchasing this item, I installed it and it worked perfectly from the day I installed it. It comes with lots of storage, and with a 16MB cache, it is really fast. I do recommend this drive to you. Was this review helpful?
