The Sonic Impact Video-55 is compatible with the 5th. Generation iPod.

The Sonic Impact Video-55, the video/audio player is about the same size as a portable DVD player. It is black in color and features a 7 x 3.5-inch widescreen LCD display with 480x234 image resolution. The unit, which carries Apple's Made for iPod logo, is rubberized on the top and bottom for a more secure carrying experience, as there is nothing to slip out of hand. Speakers are located on the side of the unit, where the screen swivels open and closed, and are built with MaxxBass Psycho-Acoustic technology, a digital amplifier, and neodymium speaker drivers.

The output power is rated at 1.2 watts per stereo channel. The Video-55 is powered by a lithium ion battery that offers about four hours of playing time, and a five hour charge time. It also charges the iPod as well. Additionally, the Video-55 ships with an AC adapter as well as a car adapter, a carry case, video cables for attaching to another video source, such as a TV, and remote control. It weighs 2lbs 6oz.

Due to a recent change in Apple iTunes software, the Nano 3G and the iPod Classic will no longer broadcast a video signal to the Video 55 when docked in the docking connector.

With Apple’s software change, the only way to view video on any existing video player, including the Video 55, is to purchase Apple’s iPod Composite Video Cable, available at Apple retail stores and Apple online at: http://store.apple.com

The cable would be used by plugging one end into the 30-pin plug on the iPod or Nano and the other end into the “AV In” plug on the side of the Video 55.

Please note that this software change by Apple does not affect the ability to play music from the iPod or Nano through the Video 55 speakers. Previous versions of the iPod are not affected by this change. All previous versions that have video capability can play video through the Video 55 when docked.

5 of 5 Great product at a great price! Wednesday, June 25, 2008
A Customer from White Plains, N.Y.
The unit shipped from Buy.com had a bad battery, so I contacted the manufacturer. It took almost 6 weeks, but I got the replacement battery and the product works great. The battery holds up for at least 3+ hours and works perfectly with my Ipod. I don't know if I'd pay $200 for it, but, for $39 it's a fantastic buy.

5 of 5 This little unit is SO much fun! Friday, June 20, 2008
KT from Northampton, PA
I had an older model of Sonic Impact's portable speakers for my iPod, but without the LCD screen. I absolutely loved it until, after 2 years use, the volume button no longer worked. Received a 6th generation, 80G Classic for Christmas and have been recording movies/podcasts on it. I loved the idea of being able to watch these videos on something portable so when the old one broke - took a chance on buying another Sonic Impact product and I haven't been disappointed! I already owned the Apple Composite AV cable ($49 - needed cable to watch iPod stuff on big TV), and the adapter that came with the V55 perfectly allows me to see my movies on the little screen. There is a very clear disclaimer on any of the sites carrying this product about Apple's software change requiring the cable. Since I got the V55 from Buy.com at an amazing sale price (AND fabulous customer svc) - for me the extra cost is well worth it. This is an awesome little gadget I take all around the house with me and in the car. Here's hoping this one lasts longer than 2 years! :)

5 of 5 A huge value when I bought it! Awesome player! Wednesday, June 18, 2008
A Customer from Edgewater NJ
I purchased this item from Buy.com when they were running an amazing sale price. What a steal!!! I have a 5th generation 60 gig black Ipod and it integrates flawlessly with the video player. The product does everything as described. The unit is well built with good fit and finish. Even comes with a compact remote that docks into the player and can be completely hidden. Another thoughtful item included was a felt carrying bag. Battery life is respectable. I'm hoping it'll improve after a couple of charge cycles. Sound is surprisingly good for the speaker size. My only gripe is that the resolution is not as good as I hoped but that may have more to do with the resolution that I ripped videos at. Another small issue is the color of the LCD screen. Even at the highest setting, colors overall were not that vibrant. With enough tweaking though I was able to get a pretty decent picture. At the price that it was purchased though I can't complain. I recently took it on a business trip and it was a joy to have on the plane. I'll never get on a plane again without this video player.

5 of 5 You don't always get what you pay for... Saturday, June 07, 2008
"Stones" from Akron, Ohio
I'm very happy that my friend let me know about this deal because I'm not the type of person to go looking for things like this. I just recently purchased a refurbished 30G video iPod and I am lucky that it is compatible with this unit because I didn't pay attention to those details when I ordered it. I was expecting a low quality toy that you might find at a discount electronics store. I was totally surprised about what I actually received! First of all, how was it even possible for them to ship the unit for free? The item is so heavy that is must have cost at least $10 in shipping. Now, on to the unit. The screen was much bigger than I had anticipated (again, my inability to pay attention to the description). I was expecting something that was about twice the size of the screen on my iPod or about the same size of a PSP screen, but it is actually about half the size of laptop computer screen. I didn't know it was a chargeable unit and assumed that it ran on batteries (I've really got to work at paying attention). I was happy to see that it came with a car adaptor and wall charger. If I had any complaints, it would be nice to have the option of using batteries just for those times when your charge is depleted and you can't plug it into anything at the moment. The remote is nice also, although I don't see myself using it much. It also comes with a black velvet drawstring bag, but I'll probably purchase a carrying case for more protection and somewhere to put the accessories. The unit feels durable and has a nice, modern look to it. My black iPod blends in nicely when it is docked. I had a problem getting it to work at first because the manual doesn't mention anything about changing the settings on your iPod. I was impressed that the controls on the unit are actually touch sensitive and not actually buttons. My only worry is that they might quit working over time (and the remote will be the only means of controlling it). Only time will tell on that. I believe the picture quality is just fine, but then again, I never used it outside of a dark room. The sound out of the speakers is strong, but it seemed to weaken with the use of headphones. I have to turn the volume all the way up to watch a movie using headphones.

5 of 5 Unbelievably cool! Tuesday, June 03, 2008
Call me satisfied from Hutto, Texas
I can sympathize with those who bought this product to work with a newer iPod only to find it would not work. That said, for our older 30G iPod, this is the coolest thing since sliced bread! This is way better for us than dragging a pile of DVDs in the van when it's time for a long drive, and the quality is about even (and it's not as though the kids care that much about compression artifacts, which occasionally appear). I am most impressed by the quality and volume of sound from this device. I did not expect that kind of volume, leave alone the bass response. Mind you, this isn't THX we're talking about, but from a device this size that's WAY more sound than I would ever have guessed And the best part was that I got free shipping, and it still arrived THE NEXT DAY! (it shipped from near Dallas, and we're only 200 miles from there). Buy.com really impressed me this time.

5 of 5 Great companion for my ipod Tuesday, June 03, 2008
Marj from Castro Valley, CA
I wasn't sure what to expect when I purchased this item since reviews had ran the gamut from exciting to alarming. However, for the price, I thought it was worth the gamble. I was PLEASANTLY SURPRISED! Some specs, I've used this with a 30gb 5th gen ipod video. Simple config changes on the ipod video setting (no additional h/w required) and voila - we're in business. I wish I had bought 2.

5 of 5 What a steal! Sunday, June 01, 2008
Rolando from Indianapolis, Indiana
I felt like I just stole something. I had known about this product from an A/V magazine. As a matter of fact it was a recommended product. So I bought 2 at that price, since my wife and I had an 30gb and 60gb Video Ipod. Picture quality can't get any better for this format, and sound is good. I'm happy

5 of 5 Just what I was looking for. Saturday, May 31, 2008
Richard from San Jose, CA
This unit is awsome. Video quality is great and the sound is even better. The audio is clear and sound just like its being played on a home theater set up. I am using a ipod video 5th generation and it works withour any problems. My 3 year old daughter likes it so much, she does not want to watch anything else. Great value and a great buy.

4 of 5 Great buy at the price Saturday, May 31, 2008
A Customer from San Jose, CA
I don't have a iPod. However, I have no problem hooking this baby up to my PS2, which means I could probably hook it up to my wii without any trouble. A potential huge video player when I get a used iPod. Good video quality with PS2, but sound quality is so-so. Simply a great deal at the price.

1 of 5 If only it worked Thursday, May 29, 2008
A Customer from Bakersfield, CA
Buy.com exceeded my expectations once again by having this to me in 2 days. Too bad Sonic Impact couldn't hold up it's end of the bargain. The unit was DOA. Since I bought it with no return privileges to Buy.com I've had to contact the manufacturer directly for service. They call it "customer service", but I have yet to receive any service. I have sent a total of 4 service requests in the past 2 weeks and have yet to hear from Sonic Impact. If the unit worked I probably would have rated much higher. It looks good, and appears to have a great interface. But, again, it didn't work. Buy.com is awesome!! Sonic Impact doesn't! I'll probably never buy from Sonic Impact again.

5 of 5 Sonic Impact Video Ipod Player rocks! Tuesday, May 27, 2008
Bounce Dawg from Los Angeles
Upon reviewing the specs for this unit I was expecting the product to be sound and worth the price paid. Let me tell you, after pulling the unit from its box, I instantly feel in love with it. Well designed housing, sleek looking and sturdy. I further evaluated the player and was extremely impressed with its sound and overall function. If you have an older version of i-tunes on your machine, this product is perfect for you. The video rendering software for PSP movies will work with this unit and the older versions of i-tunes will sync the movies no problem. I have had zero problems and no trouble getting movies to play on this player. The video quality is not bad at all for a portable player, but the sound will stand out most. For the few dollars I paid for this, I feel like a criminal. I bought another one just to have a back up! Great product, more so if you know what you're doing.

I also take it in and watch movies while waiting for my kids to get done at dr apts. ive used it at home when i wanted to watch something and dh didnt. over all i wish now I'd orderd 2 of them incase this one breaks. Either way, its a great item. I highly recommend it.

4 of 5 Great Unit and WHAT A BARGAIN! Friday, May 23, 2008
Petervito.com from Sebring FL
I have a 30GB iPod and it words great. It does take a little messing with. Make sure that the lock switch is off when trying to charge the unit or otherwise use the unit. I thought I had a DEAD unit and it was simply a matter of adjusting that switch. Also make sure when you put the iPod in the Sonic Impact that you choose TV ON. Cheers!

2 of 5 Sleek, but video does not work! Thursday, May 22, 2008
A Customer from Cour d'Alene, Idaho
I couldn't wait to get this item in the mail. The description of the products seemed awesome and unbelievable. When it finally came, we were so excited to try it only to be disappointed. The sound is great, but the video does not work for our 30 GB iPod, and the battery gets drained fast! What happened? Aarghhh! By the way, the manual isn't very helpful either. It's very vague and has little information in it. It's not worth all the trouble after all! I'm not very happy with it, so I give it a 2 out of 5 stars. Read the description very carefully before considering to purchase this product so you won't be disappointed when you get it.

2 of 5 Video player for OLD ipod Wednesday, May 21, 2008
Fred from Houston, TX
Make sure to see which iPod(s) this product is compatible with. It does not work with the new ‘classic’ iPod. I have multiple and it does work great with my 60gb video iPod. For the larger 160gb classic iPod you can play music, but no video. It has good sound and good video for the older iPods. If this is what you’re looking for it’s a great deal.

5 of 5 great product Monday, May 19, 2008
A Customer from Fontana, CA
For the price of this unit, this is a great buy!! The sound quality is great, not like your average dvd player where the sound is awful. This product for the price is the best. It only works for 5, 20 and 30 gig ipods 5th gen. So if you dont have those dont buy it.

5 of 5 Will work with anything with an RCA out Monday, May 19, 2008
A Customer from Orlando, Florida
I now have two of these things. Anything you have that has rca plugs that go out will work with this. That means Zune 80s without a dock, Zune 30 with a dock, Archos, Sansa - everything. I also turned mine into an HD TV. Get a converter box that has RCA outs, like the Insignia. Plug it into the Sonic. Make sure you have the source switched from ipod to video, and there you go. You have a nice little 7" HD TV. This also works with gen 5.5 ipods. There is a workaround for gen 6. Maybe someone else writes about it? Anyway, while you are watching TV on your sonic, you can also charge your ipod. You get sick of TV - switch the source back to ipod, and you can watch your podcasts, movies, whatever. This is my all time favorite toy because first, it does not suck, and second, it has awesome sound :) Remember - if you are a resident in American you can get $40 coupons for the converter box. So get one, and use it with this. It's pretty neat!

3 of 5 Okay if you can use it Monday, May 19, 2008
das_kaushik from Alpharetta, GA
I got it thinking that I would be able to use it with my iPod Classic 80G. The video output doesnt work. The buttons and the menu is not convenient. The sound output is decent. The price for just the speaker is a bit to high - if I consider that I am able to use it just audio output.

5 of 5 Great product! Monday, May 19, 2008
Carrie from Lodi, CA
I purchased this product so that I could watch downloaded iTunes TV Shows and movies on my iPod while commuting via mass transit each day to and from work. WOW! This product definitely makes viewing more enjoyable with the large screen, great sound, and tiltable monitor. I also use it as a music player while at work and when I am cleaning house or at the beach. The speakers sound great! The only negative thing I can say about this product is that turning the device on and off is kind of tricky. Other than that, it is definitely worth buying! Just be sure your iPod is compatible. I have a 30 GB Video iPod and it works just fine.

5 of 5 Good accesory for iPod Video Monday, May 19, 2008
Ruben Remus from Hampton, VA
Work very well with the iPod Video (30GB). Only complaints are 1) the volume buttons in the right side of my unit are not very "touch sensitive" (remote control works great, though) and 2) it is a little brain-dead when it comes to aspect ratio. The only combination that produces approximately correctly-proportioned video from widescreen sources requires you to set the V55 display to 4:3. There may be a way to encode video to look right on the V55, but the iPod Video is so finicky about the video format it will consent to play that I don't feel like messing with it (besides, it would probably look wrong on the iPod's display!).

5 of 5 Paid for itself already! Monday, May 19, 2008
wizard_prang from Louisville, KY
I had been thinking of buying a portable DVD player for some time now. When I saw this, I was pleased that my iPod was a fifth-generation and not the sixth-gen (newer is not always better). It comes with both wall AND car chargers, along with an excellent manual and a little polishing cloth, all emblazoned with the Sonic Impact Logo. The video quality is better than I expected, and the sound is better than I thought possible from such a small unit. The unit also boasts a tiny remote control. Battery life is 3-4 hours standalone, which is more than enough, since you can use the car charger on road trips. I use FairUse Wizard ($20) to rip my DVDs to iPod format, though I now use Handbrake (Free). Full-screen rips beautifully, but Widescreen does not look right - Apple's fault - unless you use handbrake and rip at 480x384 (IIRC). Then it fills the screen and looks perfect. It's also Apple's fault that this does not work with the 6th-gen iPod;An absolute must for road trips. I recently drove home from Chiago with a two-year-old aboard. It kept the little spud entertained and quiet, and paid for itself in a day.

4 of 5 Great deal - workaround for Classic Monday, May 19, 2008
Marker from The middle of, Ca
I have a 6G classic. It will work, but you have to get the NEW composite connector from Apple to make it work. Unfortunately, that's another $50. Apple put a chip in the connectors which has to handshake with the device in order to turn on the TV out. Ahhh, sweet monopoly. What you do is select your video, it will tell you to connect a device. You plug in the Apple composite connector and it will enable the TV out. You can then unplug it and move the ipod to the V55 unit and the TV out will still be active. The unit is a great deal at the sale price, nice little device.

5 of 5 A Fantastic Little Unit Monday, May 19, 2008
A Customer from Riverton, WY
I guess I was one of the few people who read the specs on the player before I bought it. I can not say enough about this product it has a great picture ( your resolution of the screen is related to the compression of the movie. Smaller size file = lower resolution.) I have to say I've owned a few portable DVD devices and this player really has the best sound quality of anything I've seen or owned. Now I'm able to entertain my 2 year old son without packing a bag full of DVD's. the battery life was shocking in length. I thought it would be gone in an hour, but after 2.5 hours it was still going strong. I love this product and I could not be happier that I bought it.

5 of 5 Great gadget Monday, May 19, 2008
A Customer from San Diego, CA
This is a great device to watch a movie on a Video iPod. Pros: big screen, great audio, a cool little remote, it's heavier than it looks (solid build), iPod battery status (on-screen display), long battery life (4-5 hours), charges iPod (using AC adaptor), car charger & great price. Cons: It does not have a battery-life indicator (no 75%, 50%, etc - it just shuts off when the battery dies), the carry case is just a bag. The V55 battery will last longer than the iPod (30G), so you will need another device to charge the iPod if no power is available (I need to find a device that does that). To shut-off the unit is a little tricky, you have to "turn it off", the red light comes on and then switch the "hold" button, otherwise it is on "stand-by" (using up the battery). Overall the item is a great buy and a pretty cool little gadget.

5 of 5 Great little device Monday, May 19, 2008
EA from Wichita Falls, Tx
I was truly pleased with my purchase, because when I am on the go I can now enjoy my movies and video podcast on a much larger screen. Sound is great and the picture to me is better than most portable dvd players. I do agree with one review that the power on and off is bit strange. Be sure to read instructions when you first get it or you will think it is broke. Other than that no complaints.

3 of 5 Have it, but can't use it.... yet Monday, May 19, 2008
A/V Industry Mom from Mesa, AZ
I bought this and was hoping my son could use it when he goes on his trips this summer. The only problem is that we both have the latest iPod Nanos and it only transmits audio, no video. According to Sonic, you have to purchase a separate video cable only available from Apple, hook it up and "force" the iPod to "speak" to the unit. Then and only then, will the Nano "talk" to the unit and you can unplug the cable and use the dock for transmitting video. Still waiting on the cable from Apple, however, so I cannot say if this works or not. I'm thinking about just building my own cable at work...

5 of 5 Works Great! Monday, May 19, 2008
A Customer from Daphne, AL
I am very pleased with my Portable Video Player. It works great with my 30G Ipod Video. I noticed, before I bought it, that it only works with certain Ipods. I got lucky and mine was one of them. The quality of the video is not the greatest, but the price is great for the versatility of the product. I use it at home and I look forward to using it on trips in the car and on the plane.

1 of 5 Big Mistake Monday, May 19, 2008
A Customer from Moscow, Idaho
This player did not work with my ipod Touch and as far as I can tell it can't be returned. There was no invoice or packing slip with the product and it shipped directly from the manufacturer. I am now trying to purchase a cord to attach and play my ipod but that will cost another $100+ for video and charging. Beware. This player is very ipod specific.

5 of 5 Great iPod Video Player Monday, May 19, 2008
A Customer from New Haven, CT
This player has a small but crisp video screen display and surprisingly good sound quality for its small size. The player comes with charger for home and car, cables and a nice carry bag to protect it. After charging, I was able to connect my 5G iPod and watch videos without any problem. Overall a great little device for the car, train, or plane.

4 of 5 Great picture for the resolution! Monday, May 19, 2008
A Customer from Simsbury, CT
I did NOT buy this for an Ipod so as far as it's compatibility with Ipod's, I haven't the slightest idea. I bought it simply because I wanted a small monitor to work with my universal dvd/cd player. Navigating through DVD-A cd's is nearly impossible without a display and I have it hooked up to a simple stereo system, i.e. no video. This is the perfect solution. I was not concerned about the picture quality so much but the quality is very, very good for such a low resolution screen. It would have been nice if it had s-video input/output, but again, for my purposes, the composite video signal is more than adequate. The power button does do some strange things - I came back to a dead battery a couple of times because I did not have the charger plugged in even though I thought I had shut the darn thing off..

5 of 5 Works on 60GB iPOD perfectly Sunday, May 18, 2008
Luis from Salt Lake, Utah
I knew when I bought it that it wouldn't display the video from my 160GB iPOD but it does play the music just fine(If I wanted to I could buy the APPLE cords and then plug my 160GB to the device's input). It works perfectly with my son's 60GB ipod and it accepts anything you throw at it via the input component cables(yellow, red, white).

1 of 5 NOT FOR GEN 6 iPod Classic! Sunday, May 18, 2008
TSchnabel from Indianapolis, IN
Works great on my kid's gen 5 video iPod but is incompatible with my Generation 6 iPod Classic. This is VERY dissapointing! Apparently Apple changed something in their software so these 3rd party devices don't work right on the newer iPod's.

5 of 5 RE: Great Electronic Dictionary Sunday, May 18, 2008
A Customer from Northridge, CA
This dictionary is virtually the only device you need to have with you when reading. I love it!! It is small yet very powerful and so valuable. I have it next to me when I am reading and instead of going past a word I am not certain about I can take 10 seconds to clear up any possible confusion which allows me to better understand what I am reading. I highly recommend!

Poor discription of product. Thought this was a portable DVD player that you can also play your ipod on. Plays ipods only. Don't own an ipod. So this is worthless to me!!!!!!

5 of 5 Great sound! Sunday, May 18, 2008
Bryan Aho from Sacramento CA
I use this as a sound system for my iPod, and the sound quality is quite good. The little remote control allows me to flip through my playlist and adjust the volume from across the room. It's too bad Apple changed the software so you have to use the external cable for the video, but you can find a 30 pin to rca cable on the internet for just a few dollars.

3 of 5 For iPod 5G only! Sunday, May 18, 2008
A Customer from Denver, NC
I own an iPod classic. I looked, but I did not see anywhere on the product page indicating this product only worked with the iPod with video (5G) at the time of my purchase. I discovered this after purchase. That is why I am reviewing my purchase, so others will know. The product certainly appears to be well made and provided decent sounding audio with my classic. I passed it along to a co-worker and have heard no complaints.

5 of 5 execllent product Sunday, May 18, 2008
Happy customer from San Francisco, CA
Bright screen. Easy to use. Remote control with convenient storage is a plus. Touch keys are not sensitive. Most of them are like that anyway. Use remote control instead. Good sound quality. I use my iPod mostly for audio books. Battery life is very long for that matter. If you use the wall charger, your iPod will get charged also. Doesn¡¯t come with USB cable. But now-a-day everything comes with USB cable. Just borrow one from other device if you need it. Default screen ratio may not be right. You can change it. You may not use the full screen. But I don¡¯t watch video that much. Only the kids do and they seem happy about it. It is a steal. I bought two, one for my friend as my Christmas gift, either for this year or for last. Wish I have bought 10. That¡¯s why I keep coming back to buy.com. Sometimes you get incredible good deals in a small window. I got a good portable speaker last Christmas with unbelievably good quality and low price. To answer the person about the need of contrast adjustment, correct me if I am wrong, this is LCD screen and that won¡¯t come with contrast adjustment. See if you can find one for your laptop. You only get brightness control.
