| | Tech Reviews | | Microsoft Zune Review By: Grahm Skee - Anything But iPod Published on: 4/18/2007 3:13 PM | | The Zune, introduced many months ago, has gotten off to an ok start but by no means a category killer. This mainly due to what I think was a rush to the market with a hacked together piece of hardware and, half-baked firmware, and overhyped wireless functionality. None the less there is a lot good stuff going on with the Zune and it is definitely on the correct path....read the full review |

The Zune is top quality. It will not break like many Ipods do. The sound is excellent and the large screen is bright and easy to view. The only negative (a big negative) I have about the Zune is that you can not delete mp3s from your computer without them deleting from your zune. Once you delete the Mp3 from your computer the next time you sync your Zune the mp3 will erase itself. I wanted a mp3 player to free my computer from music, but the zune fails to do so. This player is GREAT! I loved mine and took it practically everywhere. Much to my chagrin, this led to its demise. I was going to show somebody some videos at the pool and it took a dip. That is the only bad thing. It is NOT waterproof. Too bad. I am going to get another. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Best value / price wise / storage size / ease of u Sunday, January 27, 2008 Jim from Lower burrell, PA
I wasn't so sure about getting the Zune for two reasons. The IPod is a proven player and cutting edge in software and hardware. The Zune is MS and fairly new in the hardware business plus all the propritary stuff they are known for today. When it came to price it was a no brainer. I think the Zune far out did my expectations. The software and ease of use is unbelievable and exceptional. The player has excellent picture, video and sound qualities. Of course I had to buy the docking station which I hooked up to my Bose DVD player and HDTV with one easy simple connection. The sound and picture was great and the remote made it very easy to show friends my newest vacation videos and pictures right at my finger tip (no more jump drive or dvd to use) I must say so far the only draw back is the lack of being able to use this as a backup for some files and folders but I'm sure that is coming in the future. My opinion is if you want something that is going to be an all around great player and not that expensive then this is it without a doubt the best thing out there. One other thing if you use Windows Vista you can convert any videos you may already have in Movie Maker to WMV file so all your videos can be downloaded to the Zune.

I fell for the great deal without doing the due diligence. Maybe this will keep someone else from making the same mistake. The Zune will only play music from the Zune store or music without DRM. So all the songs I purchased online - before Zune even existed - no go. Mostly I listen to audiobooks. It's fine if I want to rip the CDs, but there's no compatibility with download audio sites such as audible.com or simplyaudio - or the audiobooks that can now be downloaded from your local library. It never occurred to me that the Zune wouldn't accept those files, since the "PlayforSure" logo on all the audio sites has a Windows Media logo on it. I'm sure if you're really just into the music and you don't mind getting it from one place, or you know how to strip off the DRM, the Zune could be a swell little gadget. If you're looking for one really cheap, mine will soon be available on ebay. I'm going back to my Sansa. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 ZUNE is the only way to go! Tuesday, November 27, 2007 Matt- Avionics Tech. Gulfstream Aerospace from Neenah,WI
After 4-5 yrs. with a Nomad Zen NX (that still works great by the way) I purchased the Zune 30 and cannot be happier. Being a tech guy I am not a bandwagon jumper who just buys a product because they saturate the market with accessories and crap before they even release the product to fool stupid consumers. I was patient in waiting for MS to fix a few small issues with their Zune software and am now reaping the benefits of my descision. The Zune wireless sync is super sweet auto downloading the latest podcasts for me from any room in my house. Sound quality is excellent and the constuction is like a steel box compared to iPod. I dropped my Zune at the gym from about 4 ft to the hard floor and watched as fellow gymgoers winced assuming I was out $200. I just picked it up and plugged my headphones back in and continued to watch my tv show. People hate on the Zune because of jealousy that Bill Gates is rich and smart and they aren't. MS listens to feedback and fixes their problems, it just can't happen overnight. Alot more people are just idiots about how to use technology and can't understand that any new machine will have issues to resolve. That's why we didn't just put astronauts in the first rocket we ever built and try to shoot them to the moon. iPod sold 450,000 units the first year. Zune sold 1 million. Give MS 2-3 more years and you'll see why Apple gave up and started putting Intel chips and Windows on their computers. Don't believe the hype. Get a Zune and enjoy it longer and less expensively. It's the hottest selling gadget right now for a reason, because people are wising up. How many iPods will YOU go through wishing you bought a Zune instead? Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 The best digital multi media player I own! Friday, November 23, 2007 Edgar C. from Syosset, NY
I love the user interface from both, the PC and Zune. A lot better than my 30GB iPod video, in my opinion. The control on the device is easier to use, too. What you click is what you get. No more fumbling of your thumb to hit the exact option you want as in iPod. The sound and video are stunning! The earbud is easy to manage, too. They magnetically attach to each other, back to back. Thereby, half the effort of managing the wire. With a slight touch of finger, you'll know which bud is left or right. Thanks to the little bump of the right bud which serves as a lock with the other magnetically. The FM radio is uncomparable. I am in my basement and I get a clear signal. It beats my stereo system, which I don't get any channel without the antenna. My feeling is that the whole chassis of Zune serves as antenna. Just amazing! There's none better than syncing in Zune. You have total control. You can pick and choose what goes to the device. Then delete what you want in the Zune. No more question of deleting the copy from your source. Oh, it automatically converts and plays iPod's video format, too during syncing. And with Buy.com's very low price, what else can beat it! Friends, this is a lot better than my 30GB video iPod.

I wanted to get a video player and I had to choose between a Zune and an Ipod. I've heard several times that Ipods tend to mess up and ironically when I was at Best Buy, there was a guy purchasing a Zune because his Ipod had failed. I decided to buy the Zune and it was incredibly simple to install the software. It is also very easy to control. Everything works good. I would recommend this product to others. 5 of 5 Better than my old IPod Tuesday, September 25, 2007 A Customer from Las Vegas, NV
It's easy to use and load your music. The program for your music is even better than ITunes. You can see your downloaded music easier. I am so glad my IPod broke and I replaced it with my Zune. Much more sturdy too. I highly recommend this if you're look for a good mp3 player that will hold up to a lot. Was this review helpful?
5 of 5 Zune over IPod Sunday, September 16, 2007 A Customer from phoenix, az
I have now owned both a 30gb IPod video and a Zune. The Zune is everything I hoped for and more after my IPod crashed and apple didn't want to remedy the issue. The zune works flawlessly in all features, comes with a larger screen, and radio capabilities. Although slightly larger, which isn't enough to matter the zune is a far superior product. Also the zune marketplace is much better than itunes Was this review helpful?

5 of 5 Great Media Player!!! Monday, August 27, 2007 A Customer from South Florida
After using a video ipod for several years (and sending it to get fixed several times), I decided to do my homework and buy a new mp3 player. I came across this little baby. I am completely satisfied with the zune, it blows ipod way out of the water. Picture quality is great, video quality great, all menus are set up extremely well, very easy to use. Like most people that use Microsoft(like their un-secure operating systems), I was VERY cautious buying an Microsoft product, but surprisingly it is very good. The zune software, I believe, is set up better and easier to use than itunes. However, I did run into one small problem, sometimes it wont let me sync a new video I add to a monitored folder(yep another Microsoft bug), to fix I just rebooted, then works fine. 5 of 5 Great iPod Alternative Saturday, August 04, 2007 Devin from Riverdale, Utah
The first thing that caught my eye was the massive and beautiful screen. It is incredibly easy to watch video on. Everything looks absolutely amazing on this device.

The menu systems are easy to use and easy to navigate. Quickly getting to the song you want is as simple as three button pushes.

The only problem I have with it is that if you press too many buttons to quickly after starting it, it will freeze briefly (no longer than five seconds) trying to "think" of what to do next.

I recommend this product to anyone trying to avoid the iPod. Was this review helpful?

1 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Microsoft Zune Sunday, May 13, 2007 Becca Noslo from Foxworth
I am personally in love with my Zune. Microsoft did want something to go against Apple's Ipod, and 'ZUNE' is a good start. This device has a GREAT, larger screen (better than any Ipod I've seen before), crystal clear picture, and good audio sound. It can hold pictures, videos, and music- wonderful product. It is bigger, but it fits nicely in the hand and an already protective-like casing on it (it just the screen that needs to be protected).
The downfall is the installation of the software! That was the main problem with me. The zune software (much like windows media player) was a wretched thing at first. It wouldn't install by itself on my computer (from what I've heard, this error isn't a rare thing). I had to go to a Zune board (http://www.zuneboards.com/content/view/28/2/) to get program codes, and manually type them in Run so the software would install. Zune also gets updated by Microsoft (via this software) to improve the performance of my Zune (speed basically). Every time these updates are needed I have to get it manually from the Zune boards... but it isn't often.

Overall, I love the product- its just the software (at times) than can be a pain in the neck. Was this review helpful?

The Zune and software is sooo much easier to use than the Ipod. It has been compatible with all my music and video files. I charge it overnight and play music files or the radio at work, I have left it running for a nine hour shift. I highly recommend the Zune. Was this review helpful?
0 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 3 of 5 It died Thursday, April 26, 2007 A Customer from Seattle, WA
And I'm waiting longer for my replacement to come than I had the zune in the first place. Maybe I just got lucky, but mine sounded kinda like a lightsaber when I moved it around and had a bit of a hard time keeping tracks organized. Then it overheated and died after about a week and a half of ownership. But aside from that video performance was excellent, sound quality was pretty good (even though the headphones suck), and the a/v kit for my stereo is sweet. Was this review helpful?

2 of 3 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Great MP3 Player! Monday, April 16, 2007 Gabe from NJ
Having owned a variety of MP3 players over the years (even before the iPod, during the time of 256 MB players), I can safely say that the Zune is the best so far. While the Zune does have minor issues, its strengths easily blow the iPod out of the water.
The interface is extremely user friendly and easier to personalize. The screen is GIGANTIC and crystal clear (though the album art is at a lower resolution, for some odd reason--not much of a problem though). Though the control buttons are overlaid with a wheel-like piece, they aren't similar to the iPod's controls. It's merely a d-pad with up and down (volume controls) and left and right (fast-forward/skip and rewind/back). In addition, there is a back button, used to go backward through menus, and a play/pause button, used to turn the system on and off and...well...play and pause.
The device itself is very easy to install and sync (took me only a few minutes). Overall time to full charge is around 3 hours. Though the Zune itself is a bit larger than the iPod, it isn't as big as some of the other reviewers would make you think. It's actually quite small. Also, the casing is a thousand times better than the iPod's (made of a tough rubber-plastic-type material--no smudges). In addition, the colors are awesome, with a cool two-tone effect (black with blue edging is the best).
Though some of the other reviewers out there have many bad things to say of the Zune, these are merely nitpickings on the Zune's own shortcomings from iSheep, and not comparisons to the iPod (e.g., the Zune's wi-fi isn't what I want yet!--nevermind the fact that the iPod has NO wi-fi and the Zune's wi-fi can easily be expanded with a firmware upgrade). When compared to the iPod, the Zune is clearly the better pick of the two. Remember, just because something is more popular and has a larger fanbase doesn't mean that it's better.
If you're debating on whether or not to pick up a Zune, I highly recommend it. Was this review helpful?

0 of 1 customers found this review helpful. 5 of 5 Zune 10 times better than the iPod Saturday, March 24, 2007 A Customer from Pittsburgh, PA
I have owned the zune for the last four months. It is an awesome device. It has an awesome screen. Videos are great to watch on it. The Radio tells you the name of the station. I would drop your iPods to get a zune. The album art and user interface in the using the zune is a total different and entertaining experience. Microsoft knows how to make software and an awesome portable media player. The Zune Marketplace is an addicting place. I have the music subscription option, it is a great way to discover new music and stay with current pop music. It is an "all you can eat" subscription. Was this review helpful?

I have had 3 ipods 4gb, 20gb and a 512k all of these unit have went bad due to a hard drive failure or battery or something. I waited for this unit for a year and I finailly got one the screen is crystal clear and the sound is great now I watch my favorite movies where ever I go. and the AV setup is great also. I will never go back to ipod to many problems as for now no problems with the Zune. I do admit the Apples Itunes software is far better than Zune but I am sure Microsoft will improve it soon Was this review helpful?
18 of 20 customers found this review helpful. 4 of 5 not bad, could be a little better Monday, November 20, 2006 stoli from C'ville VA
I already have an Ipod mini (4gig) and a MPIO Digitalway 256 mp3 player. I've been feeding my cd collection (200+ cds) into my computer and hated not having all my collection on one device. I thought it was time to get one of the hard drive based mp3 players so this was my criteria;
-had to have fm tuner (which the ipod doesn't)
-had to play wmv, acc, mp3 (i didn't like how itunes copies and converts my wmv collection taking up double the space on my computer)
-30gig or more
I took a chance on the Zune which meets these features PLUS has the 3" screen, plays wmv, mp4 video, and jpeg photos. It took my itunes collection no problem (except of course the DRM collection).
The negative:
-I don't like the Zune software, seems very redudant since Windows Media Player does all the same stuff. I just use Media player to do all my cd ripping and then sync it with the zune software. I'm hoping that Microsoft allows for syncing with Media player later.
-can't use it for file storage like the ipod. hey microsoft, um duh?? bad decision there.
-the user interface isn't as elegant as the ipod, but still easy to use.
-although wifi for this is a cool idea, it is pretty useless right now since it doesn't do anything.
Overall I'm happy with it. I'm hoping with some more tweaking from microsoft, they will deliver some updates which will free up memory for file sharing, add some functionality to the wifi, and allow a little more freedom with Media Player. Was this review helpful?
