Xandros Desktop OS 3 Standard Edition is easy to use and works great. It installed without a hitch on every system on which I tried it, including 2 laptops. I was even able to get the wireless working on a laptop in minutes using ndiswrapper and the drivers that came with the system. No other linux distribution worked so well, including SUSE, Fedora and Ubuntu. Updates are easy and quick, and turn around time for email customer support is quite short.
By default, Xandros installs KDE with its own set of customizations which provide a look and feel that is similar to that of Windows. New users making the transition will feel at home while still harnessing the power of Linux. The system runs fast and is stable. Even features like hibernate and restore work for the system on which I tested it. Unlike other Linux systems that boast of their package count, Xandros includes only one standard application for each task. This keeps the system small and fast but it also means that it not suitable for a Linux enthusiast. Applications like gcc are not installed by default but can be downloaded later, so this is not a system for developers or power users eithers. Others will find it to be a great Linux desktop solution. Was this review helpful?
