Kevin Costner plays the most famous lawman ever to stride the Wild West. In a gritty, complex portrayal hailed as a "classic American performance" (Bob Campbell, Newhouse Newspapers), Academy Award winner Costner plays the man who became a myth in an epic, action-filled saga directed and co-written by Lawrence Kasdan.

Gene Hackman as Wyatt's iron-willed father and Dennis Quaid as Earp's deadly best friend, Doc Holliday, add power to this hard-hitting Western. From Wichita to Dodge City to the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona, Wyatt Earp is a thrilling journey of romance, adventure and mythic courage.

"...a sprawling epic of the Old West."  Bob Fenster, Arizona Republic
"...a fascinating ride to a West where darkness and heroism mingle, a triumph for Kasdan, Costner, Quaid and the company."  Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune
"A masterpiece! Romantic, heroic and passionate."  Pat Collins, WWOR-TV
"...sweeping landscapes and visual splendour..."  Sight and Sound Magazine
"Spectacular. Kevin Costner Is riveting. Dennis Quaid is dynamite."  Susan Granger, CRN, American Movie Classics

Editor's Note

An epic (at least in length), personal telling of the life of legendary lawman Wyatt Earp. This dark film traces the early development of his strong sense of family loyalty and follows his career as a marshal with his brothers and his friend Doc Holliday. Academy Award Nominations: Best Cinematography.

Plot Summary

Epic biography about legendary cowboy Wyatt Earp. The film spans Earp's life, from his youth, when blood and gore made him deeply uncomfortable, to his role in the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral, to his becoming a rigid, by-the-book sheriff.| Also dramatized are Earp's relationships with his brothers and their wives, and with loyal friend Doc Holliday, who is dying of tuberculosis.

ReelViews 7 of 10
"Kevin Costner is fast becoming Hollywood's ""three-plus hour"" actor. This is his third film during the nineties to reach or exceed the one-hundred eighty minute mark (the other two being Dances with Wolves and JFK)...Wyatt Earp is visually impressive, but that's no big surprise. Any western, and certainly any would-be epic, has to boast a good cinematographer (in this case, it's Owen Roizman). The musical score is marginally less effective. Although composer James Newton Howard seemingly attempts to recapture the mood of Dances with Wolves, The Last of the Mohicans, and Gettysburg, his themes aren't as memorable...In much the same way that Chaplin overextends itself by trying to present a complete picture of the actor's life, Wyatt Earp's attempts to cover so many years lead to too many scenes with little emotional power. The film doesn't shoot blanks, and it is better than Tombstone, but, considering the names involved, a little disappointment isn't out of the question." - James Berardinelli

DVD Verdict 8 of 10
"When it comes to gun slinging, tobacco spittin' cowboys, Kevin Costner is our generation's equivalent to John Wayne (keep in mind I said equivalent, not equal). So far Costner has been featured in such westerns as Lawrence Kasdan's Silverado, the Oscar winning Dances With Wolves..., 2003's Open Range, and his second western with Kasdan, the 1994 flop Wyatt Earp...Wyatt Earp had the unfortunate luck of being released only a short while after the beloved Tombstone, released in 1993. Like Tombstone, Wyatt Earp deals with lawman Wyatt Earp's (Kurt Russell) legendary gunfight at the OK Corral alongside sickly Doc Holiday (played by Val Kilmer). While Tombstone was a tight, taut action movie with memorable characters, Wyatt Earp is a lumbering, sometimes pretentious melodrama that seems unsure of just who Wyatt was...Wyatt Earp is not what I'd consider a perfect western. Though there are a few scattered good things going on in the film, the fact remains that it's a bit too slow and far too long for my personal tastes." - Patrick Naugle
