An Ancient Evil Lies Dormant within Deepholm, the Domain of Earth in the Elemental Plane.
An ancient evil lies dormant within Deepholm, the domain of earth in the Elemental Plane. Hidden away in a secluded sanctuary, the corrupted Dragon Aspect Deathwing has waited, recovering from the wounds of his last battle against Azeroth and biding his time until he can reforge the world in molten fire. Soon, Deathwing the Destroyer will return to Azeroth, and his eruption from Deepholm will sunder the world, leaving a festering wound across the continents. As the Horde and Alliance race to the epicenter of the cataclysm, the kingdoms of Azeroth will witness seismic shifts in power, the kindling of a war of the elements, and the emergence of unlikely heroes who will rise up to protect their scarred and broken world from utter devastation. This limited edition Collector's Set features a wealth of rare and exclusive items to aid you at the dawn of a cataclysmic new era.

Cataclysm is a love letter to fans of World of Warcraft, as it celebrates everything that made the original game so successful while carefully updating the old game to the new standard of play that Blizzard has set. With that new design philosophy finally "coming home", the far-off lands of Northrend and Outland seem like a distant memory - well, at least, until you realize that you still have to visit them to level from 60 to 80 or so. Despite that, this expansion is chock full of new content for both new and old players, lowbies and power-gamers, and it's really one of the best experiences you can have in an MMORPG - assuming you've got the time to play as well as a good group of friends to enjoy it with. - Jeff Buckland

It's difficult to score Cataclysm, because, as Rob pointed out, there has simply never been a gaming product like this before. Judged purely as an expansion pack and leaving the free patch content to one side, it's excellent but ever so slightly underwhelming...Cataclysm doesn't just make WOW better. It does something even more valuable than that; it renews it. It fires your excitement at starting on that long road one more time, and invites you to relish the journey just as much as you'll lose yourself in its ending. If the price we have to pay for that is that it's a little less magical and a little more Magic Kingdom, then that is a price we will all willingly, happily pay. - Oli Welsh

While incredibly epic, the changes are a little bittersweet. To those that have played since the beginning (myself included) it feels a little sacrilegious. This virtual world is somewhere many have spent a good portion of their lives spending time, being entertained and forging friendships. But what has Blizzard done? They've given us all the more reason to stay in this world, continue to explore it and fight for it against Deathwing. World of Warcraft has never been a game that breaks boundaries. What Blizzard has excelled at is taking ideas from other places, refining and improving them, and making them their own. With Cataclysm they've done something that has never been done before on this scale: they took one of the most popular and successful games in history, and utterly changed it. I, for one, love them for it. - GamerVision
