Editor's Note

A wry and amusing musical about a world famous candymaker who hides five golden tickets in candy bars for five lucky children. Young, good-natured Charlie (Peter Ostrum) wins one of the tickets hidden amongst thousands of Wonka chocolate bars. What have Charlie and the other four kids won? A tour through Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, led by the loveable, eccentric, but often mean-spirited Wonka (Gene Wilder) himself. The factory itself is like a fantasy world: crazy color schemes, wild inventions, secret rooms, busy oompa-loompas, and lots and lots of delectable sweets. But Wonka has a hidden agenda, and during the tour he tests each child's character and honesty. Based on Roald Dahl's children's book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Brilliant Observations on 1173 Films 8 of 10
Roald Dahl messes with the plot of his book in ways that work well on screen, and Gene Wilder is possessed by the gentle glee and madness that any child would hope for, and expect, from a chocolate tycoon. The grandparents in bed work even better as a sight gag, and the boat trip is positively psychedelic. It can be argued that the Oompa-Loompas strike you more as pets than people, a consideration confused by some chocolate concern's decision to put out little candies called Oompa-Loompas at the time, but their songs are silly enough that you don't dread them at all...Mel Stuart keeps the plot running along amidst sets worthy of "Batman." What more could a kid ask for than that? Fine performance by Peter Ostrum (as Charlie) was his first and last. Unimpressed by show biz, I hear that he's now a very fine veterinarian. - Clayton Trapp

Reel.com 9 of 10
If one asked children of recent generations to describe or draw heaven, a lot of the results would look or sound like Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Who among us can forget our first glimpse inside its halls? The chocolate river, the edible mushrooms, the butterscotch teacups...One of the most remarkable things about Willy Wonka is that there's not a bad performance or an ill-conceived moment. Gene Wilder is perfectly mercurial as Wonka, scary one moment, tender the next. The various adults, save those in Charlie's family, are the monstrous kind often found in Dahl's work and the source of much eternal delight to children. One could argue about the Eurocentricity of the cast, but since so many of the youngsters are such brats, who'd want to? - Rod Armstrong
