The songs and story of The Who's classic album. Who's Next is viewed by many as the greatest testament to the songwriting talent of Pete Townshend and the musical power of The Who. When the album was released in 1971, it climbed to the Top 5 on the Billboard chart and remained in the Top 40 for five months. The story of how The Who came to record the album is told by group members Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, and John Entwistle, together with contributions by those who were close to the group during this recording, also providing insight into the importance of the late great Keith Moon to the success of The Who. The songs recorded for the Who's Next album are featured here, including such classics as "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Baba O'Riley" and "Behind Blue Eyes." Included in this documentary program are previously unseen performances of songs from the album that prove the longevity and lasting appeal of Who's Next, a true classic album.

Editor's Note

In a career of defining moments, WHO'S NEXT might just be the single greatest testimony to the songwriting talent of Pete Townshend and the musical power of The Who. This stellar documentary provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the making of the celebrated album, which was salvaged from the remains of Townshend's abandoned, overly ambitious sci-fi rock opera "Lifehouse." Featuring interviews with Townshend and surviving band members Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle, this episode of the CLASSIC ALBUMS series is a vital companion piece to the album itself, which includes such legendary hits as "Baba O'Riley," "The Song is Over," and "Won't Get Fooled Again." Early archival footage of the band performing classic tracks like "I Can't Explain" and "My Generation" help to further illustrate just how far the band journeyed to become one of rock-and-roll's most towering giants.

5 of 5 This DVD is a must for WHO fans, studio musicians! Wednesday, May 22, 2002
tkdfight from Virgina Beach, VA

This DVD is a must for WHO fans and studio musicians! There are excellent interviews with all the (surviving) key players. The interviews with producer Glynn Johns were especially insightful to those interested in the studio recording process. Johns dissects several of the classic recordings on the album, allowing us to hear the contribution each makes to the completed track. A snippet of an alternate solo on "Going Mobile" is heard, along with John's recollection of the recording of the over-the-top sounding solo all WHO fans are intimately familiar with! Without a doubt however, the most amazing recordings heard are the portions of songs where Johns - and later long time sound man Pridden - allow us to hear the brilliance of beloved drummer Moon. Such a loss! We miss you! Anyway, if that weren't enough there is some pretty good (but a bit stock and staged at some points) live footage, though I wasn't wild about the way they often segued directly from studio to stage; the pitch was often off, a bit disconcerting but not unbearable. There is also some very good footage of Pete and John performing live in a present-day studio environment. The sound is excellent, as it is throughout. Throw in some (yes, there is more) vintage footage of Pete recording demos for the album (Lifehouse, actually) in (one of) his famed home studio, along with excellent documentation of vintage synth gear and HOW it was used to create the fantastic sounds on the album. Pete even demos some of it for us! Shown throughout are all kinds of studio equipment from the most modern to back in the '70s. Really, really great stuff all around if you are a studio musician of any kind, producer, or engineer, very inspirational. I really can't emphasize the very high density of quality material on this DVD enough. I was very pleasantly surprised - stunned - at how informative it was! Not a second is wasted, and there is much to learn for the careful and discerning viewer, with a minimum of obligatory chatter!
